The 1970 - 71 season was a good season for music in the world of Hanna Barbara. That year a show called Josie and the Pussycats on the air, as well as the second season of Scooby Doo Where Are You!

Both shows had chase scenes with bubble gum catchy songs in the background in every episode. (Except for the SDWAY episode "The Tiki Scare")

This is a two part question, which show had the better overal music? Which was the best song between the two shows?

As far as overal music, it is tough. As great as the Austin Robets songs were on Scooby Doo, I think I would probably go with Josie and the Pussycats.

For favorite song, I love the songs on both shows, including the songs "7 Days A Week" and "Daydreamin" by Austin Robets, but my favorite song between the two shows is easily "La La La (If I Had You)" by Josie and the Pussycats.

That's kind of a hard one to answer. But, I would give the nod to Josie. Their tunes were very much R&B influenced, ala Motown. And they released their tunes on an album in 1971, though it didn't sell well, and is now considered a collector's item. (I wish the album could somehow be re-issued or put on iTunes, at least. The Scooby chase songs were released on the Scooby Snax album put out by Rhino a few years ago.) Overall, Josie had better music than the Scooby show did.

Actully the Josie album was rereleased in 2001 with a bunch of bonus track entitled Josie And The Pussycats: Stop, Look, And Listen: The Capital Recordings. It was a limited edition album, with only 5000 copies made.

As far as the chase scene themselfs, there is no question in my mind the edge is to Scooby Doo. No offence to Josie or any other show that had chase scenes, but Scooby and the gang especially Scooby and Shaggy, were masters of the chase scenes. Just like Babe Ruth and baseball, Michael Jordon and basketball, Tiger Woods and golf, the same is true for Scooby Doo and chase scenes.

Gosh, I like both shows' songs a lot. Josie had more of them, but I was a Scooby fan first, so...

I'll give Josie the edge. Since the Scooby gang was never actually a rock group (mercifully), it's rather odd that there are songs in the second season episodes. It made sense for music to be on Josie. Does anyone know why music was put on Scooby that year? I've never actually read an explanation. I'm guessing the popularity of the Archies, followed by the Pussycats, led to this decision.

My favorite Josie songs are La La La and Inside Outside Upside Down. On Scooby, I like Seven Days A Week and Recipe For My Love.

By the way, this is my first post:)

Had the group that preformed the actual Josie and the Pussycats songs under the name Josie and the Pussycats, Cathy Dougher, Cherie Moore (better known as Cheryl Ladd), and Patrice Holloway , had gone on tour as planned (canceled because the album flopped), would Austin Roberts had gone on tour with them?

Actually, the gang was originally meant to be a group of performers known as the "Mysteries Five" (One of the original titles for the SD series until they settled on SDWAY.) Several songs were prepared and recorded but the premise was changed so that the gang were just a bunch of investigative teens. They decided to use the songs during the second season chase scenes instead.

Hard to say - but he probably would have been involved somehow. The studio musicians who doubled as "The Archies" got to tour, so why not?

That's fantastic! I didn't know they had recorded songs for the show that soon! Thanks a lot for the info:)

There's one thing that I have always wondered about the Scooby Doo chase scene songs. I always wondered what would have happened if any early 1970's pop music acts had recorded versions of the second season SDWAY chase songs. I could definitely see Bobby Sherman or somebody like that record "8 Days A Week or any of the other songs that they used. Yes, Jerry Reed and Davy Kones sung versions of two Scooby chase songs during episodes of The New Scooby Doo Movies but nobody actually recorded versions of those songs. Frankly with all the Bubble Gum type Pop Music on the charts in the late 60's and early 70's, i'm surprised the producers never decided to do that. Plus, what if any of those songs actually charted and Casey Kasem counted them down on American Top 40 (the show started in 1970), I can imagine him saying something like "at number 23 a song used in the Saturday Morning cartoon series Scooby Doo Where Are You". Still, it might have been interesting to hear something like that.

Definitely Josie & the Pussycats! My favorite Scooby song is "Tell Me Tell Me" from "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Werewolf" I also really liked "Pretty Mary Sunlight" & I wish it had been included on the Scooby Album (the original not Jerry Reed's) One of the best songs from Josie & the Pussycats was somehow missed on the album someone mentioned. "I Think I Love You Too Much" from the "Plateau of the Apes Plot" isn't on any of the albums.

Like, wow! You beat me to this post! I was going to say the exact same thing. This is a great song ;) I recorded it on tape directly from the episode, so there are all those goofy sound effects, but at least I can hear it!

I actually like the cartoon versions of Road Runner and Lie Lie Lie to the CD versions.

Could Hanna Barbara, or as it is know Warner Brothers, rights to these songs expire?

In the New Scooby Doo Movies episode The Haunted Showboat , Josie and the Pussycats preform on the boat at the end of the episode, but there is no song. Could they have used an old Josie and the Pussycats song? I think they should preformed a cover of Scooby Doo Where Are You chase song like Jerry Reed and Davy Jones did, or even the Scooby Doo Where Are You theme song. I guess they couldn't get the singing voices of the Pussycats. But they still could have used an old Pussycats song.

The song used in the New Scooby Doo Movies was from Josie & the Pussycats in Outer Space. They only used the instrumental part & left out the vocals.

I know, but why? Was it some legal reasons with lyric writers, or they didn't pay royalties to the singing voices of the Pussycats?

Quite honestly, in my opinion the music from both shows is fantastic. Back in the day, HB did a great job as far as music was concerned for their shows. Of course the shows were good stuff too!

Agreed, and I said on another thread, HB was a fore frount in music, they were the first animation company to embrace and use rock n roll music and the rock n roll culture on its shows.
