The only real thing I'm looking forward to is Kaiji, from the creator of Akagi.

Eh...Haruhi S2 can't come soon enough.

Just for reference, this blog (http://scrumptious.animeblogger.net/2007/09/26/2007-fall-anime-menu/) covers what's coming up. Lists only seem to mention brand new shows though, so its not everything that's coming this season.

For me there are shows I know I need to see, and then there's what I'm ambivalent about but is probably worth a chance. Here's where my priorities are at.

Must-see shows

#1. Mobile Suit Gundam 00. For any Gundam fan watching this one is an obvious priority, but any fan should give this a look. Going by appearance this one is very well produced, and has some great staff behind it such as Suzushima from Full Metal Alchemist directing. The plot & setting are rather unique as well.

#2. Code Geass season 2. For the first 25 episodes, this show was a masterpiece. Its got superb animation, CLAMP designs, mecha, and a smart plot that keeps you guessing. Lelouch is one of the best antiheroes ever; his merciless cunning and twisted psychology keep things moving when the mecha war story does not. Finally, the cliffhanger ending was masterful. If season 2 is anywhere near the same quality, it could be the highlight of the season.

#3. Ghost Hound. Production IG's 20th anniversary project. Apparently its about three kids that can see and/or travel to a spiritual world, whose events have an impact on our own. With Shirow Masamune and Ryutaro Nakamura (Serial Experiments Lain) involved, this one is almost impossible to ignore.

#4. You're Under Arrest: Full Throttle. Okay, its not exactly original. But You're Under Arrest is a classic, and if it follows in the footsteps of its predecessors this should be a show that's consistently enjoyable to watch.

#5. Sketchbook. A slice-of-life comedy. Possibly a spiritual successor to Lucky Star, this is also adapted from a short-panel comic. Reading about this in Newtype USA got me quite interested.

Shows that are worth a chance

#1. Dragonaut: The Resonance. Mecha action in space, from Gonzo. Hell, why not. Anime sci-fi is ever my weakness. If this is really a "space romance" that could be pretty cool.

#2. Rental Magica. Magicians for hire? I am intrigued. This appears to have some elements of shonen self-discovery and some mystery as well, what with apparent secrets of the past to be uncovered and such.

#3. Jyuushin Enbu - Hero Tales. A young boy and two friends seek a sword so he can discover his destiny. Well, if there's a fantasy/adventure show worth watching this is probably it. Full Metal Alchemist's Arakawa Hiromu is involved. Even if its standard fighting genre, I figure it will be a cut above the various RPG adaptations that are coming.

#4. Mokke. About two twin sisters: one can see spirits, the other is especially vulnerable to possession by them. Supernatural fantasy, mystery, and slice of life combine. This will either be really boring or a diamond in the rough.

#5. Genshiken season 2. Not one of my favorite shows, but when I saw the first season via the R1 release this one did grow on me. I presume it is only a matter of time until this is licensed.

#6. Clannad. Ugh. Meh. I am VERY ambivalent and hesitant about this one. This season is par for the course for having a slew visual novel/dating sim adaptations that are almost guaranteed to be horrible. This is the only possible exception. The major bright side is that KyoAni is handling this. Air is a cult hit, and I was stunned by Kanon's quality. However any adaptation is only as good as the content, and that's something sorely lacking in this genre. Worth a chance, but approach with caution.

The only thing I'm mildly looking forward to is Gundam 00. (since I used to be a Gundam fan - before Gundam Seed, that is)

It really is a shame that Gurren Lagann is ending today.

Just Kaiji and Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro for me. I suggest everyone check out Neuro. It's like Beetlejuice meets Detective Conan. From what I've seen of the manga, Neuro may very well be one of the most entertaining anime characters yet! :anime:

Nah thanks :P. My interest is in the following;

Mobile Suit Gundam 00
Ghost hound
Hero Tales
Shakugan no Shana Second
Glass Fleet - U.S release
ZEGAPAIN - U.S release [October], though I'll get it on a later date
Garden of Sinners - Composition by Yuki Kajiura

Yeah, it indeed seems interesting. Which MS Gundam 00 seems to like mirror our ongoing war. But use it in a fictional future sense and use our universe as the base of the new series, instead of the fictional Universal Century or Celestial Era (SEED & Destiny).

And I like the character art too.

Is absolute0 from that blog my long lost twin or something? Because our opinions on just about every single show listed are exactly the same. So much that it's scary.

Rental Magica looks like something I'd like so I'm looking forward to that. Ghost Hound and Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro both look interesting.

Pretty much just Gundam 00. Everything else seems to be more moe shows. Yawn.

The only new shows I'm immediately interested in are Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro and Mobile Suit Gundam 00. I'll check out other shows if I hear positive things about them. The Spring season should be more interesting, with us getting the second seasons of Code Geass and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, at the very least.

Not to mention continuing shows I'm watching that includes Prince of Tennis Semifinals OVA, Eyeshield 21, Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl, Katekyo Hitman REBORN!, D.Gray-man, Naruto Shippuuden, and One Piece.

Gundam 00 looks like a hit.

For some reason, I'm intrigued by Kaiji. Could be the winner of this year's Kemonodzume-Madhouse-experimental-crazy-sh** award.

I hope Hero Tales is better than Buso Renkin as far as the "2nd series from a hit shonen manga-ka" subgenre goes.

Ghost Dog has all the elements to be a classic. Then again, so did Wolf's Rain. Must watch, but I don't know if it'll be any good or not.

The only anime I'm interested in is the Death Note dub. If it's good I'll watch and if it's bad I'll skip it. Other than that, nothing anime related.

Are you sure this is airing in the Fall? I've heard rumors, but I have yet to hear anything concrete that it is. I'd be super excited if it was, but I have also heard not until 2008 will it air.

From what I understand, it will air next spring. It should be well worth the wait, though.

Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro.
Myself; Yourself.
Mokke.
ef - a tale of memories.
Moyashimon: Tales of Agriculture.
Ghost Hound.
Oh, and that one with the big robot things. /dodges glares from Gundam fanboys.

Ghost Hound and Moyashimon are probably the ones I'm most looking forward to, though I'm definitely going to check out all I've listed above.

Eh, too soon to tell on any of them, what with only having character designs and basic plot summaries to work with. I'll probably just wait until some blog reviews come out before I potentially pursue any shows.

Why is Geass split in 2? I'm especially interested since 00 will be doing similar...is Japan slowly migrating to more Western-style seasons?

GWOtaku

I'm not really sure what the circumstances are, although the symmetry between Geass and Gundam 00 is interesting. I'm thinking its not so much a trend as it is the Gundam 00 staff deciding Geass had a good idea, or maybe even Sunrise thinking this is a good way to handle their longer series. Given Geass' great success, I can see why they'd want to give the formula another try.

I don't think it's so much 'split in two' as Geass was a series which became very popular, and so they were able to make a sequel. You can't just go making 50+ episodes of a completely unproven property, at least not very often.

It's the same reason many anime will get several seasons of 13-26 episodes. The show becomes a hit, so they're able to produce more episodes.

I'll definately check out Gundam 00.

These look interesting to me and I might check them out:

Kaiji
Mokke
Sketchbook
Ghost Hound

I'll watch Code Geass: Season 2 after I finish Season 1.

Gah, I just wish Fairy Tail would get animated already. :(

Anyways, I'll also be sticking with watching Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai as well as D.Gray-Man in terms of continuing series. The fillers for DGM are almost over thankfully.

I think it's more of a money saving issue than a decision to move to a Western-style season. I also think this splitting up Gundam 00 also has to do with the timeslot it's going into. That slot is considered important (6PM Saturday) and the downhill slide in the ratings post FMA is also part of the issue.

Specifically, what little I've been able to gather on ratings post GSD (who's early ratings were better than FMA but had waned toward the end) points to Blood+ not doing as well as GSD in the long haul (the ratings were equal to GSD on a good weekend to begin with and went down from there) and the show that replaced Blood+ (whose name escapes me but I think it was a Japanese historical) doing so poorly they stopped it at 24/26 (even though it had a 50 episode deal in the beginning) and replaced it with another show (I keep thinking it was Heroic Age or Deltora Quest but I'm having a hard time tonight pulling names up out of memory). Toss in that Code Geass was suppose to be the show that replaced Blood+ but was moved to a later timeslot when they decided to go with the historical and I think the network managed to come out looking very bad.

So my thought is that they aren't willing to commit to 50 episode shows anymore, even if they're Gundam. I think most of the other Japanese broadcasters had move to this position years ago, so I doubt we'll be seeing many shows with the set 50/52 lengths anymore, unless they are non-standalone series which are intended to run as long as the show is popular enough to support new episode (like Bleach, InuYasha or One Piece).

I'll probably just check out Gundam 00, Ghost Hound, Neuro, Dragonaut, and Jyuushin Enbu. Everything else looks kind of lame, from the descriptions I've read.

Ryoutarou
10-01-2007, 09:04 AM
Dragonaut the Resonance
Shugo Chara
Ghost Hound
Gundam 00
Rental Magica
Jushin Enbu

Whether I'll actually watch any of them beyond the first few episodes is the question, I'm hoping that 00 and Jushin Enbu are two shows that I can stick with because I've loved all of the promotional material.

Nothing much interests me from the list except Rental Magical and Myself Yourself. I did see a bit of Genshiken and somewhat enjoyed it. And the cast looks a lot larger than it was from the first season; so I might check it out...

It seems that Gundam 00 has created such a big fanbase other shows are being ignored completely. What happened to Kaiji? Ghost Dog?

Dark Fact
10-31-2007, 01:40 AM
Gundam's gonna get a big fanbase because it's Gundam. However, Clannad TV is also doing enormously well in the anime community. Kaiji is still getting a lot of attention despite lack of word of promos.

That said, I'm loving Kaiji to bits. It's an awesome show all around and I'm trying to convince my anime club prez to show the first three episodes at our fall convention in a couple of weeks.
