Having recently played this game again, for the Sega Genesis, I thought it might be fun to look back on what was actaully a great Spider-Man game!

That was a TOUGH game. I beat it with a Game Genie though. Carnage was by far one of the toughest bosses ever in videogame history. His attacks are extremely deadly and there's almost no opportunities to hit him without getting hit after you complete your combo on him. I absolutely love the game though.

After I started playing this without the Game Genie, I'd just use the switching feature to fight Carnage on the last two stages. Then when his energy is low enough I'd fight more directly.

I always hated that part right before Coak and Dagger join the group...where you just hit a bunch of thugs that never seem to stop showing up. It wasn't too difficult, it just got very monotonous.

I don't recall ever actually beating this game. I think the farthest I ever got was to the Night Club level after you get the FF's sonic emitter. The Baxter building level was so damn annoying, as was the Central Park level with Doppleganger, Shriek and Carnage.

What did everyone think of the unofficial follow-up to this game, Spider-Man & Venom: Seperation Anxiety? Apparently the reviews were really negative toward it.

I can understand why the reviews were negative. The graphics were toned down a little, the music was bad, no comic book-style cutscenes, summoning super heroes that had nothing to do with the story.

Seperation Anxiety felt like a rushed sequel. I must admit that the added multiplayer was certainly a nice addition though. It wasn't a horribly bad game but after the great Maximum Carnage, I think the designers should have tried keep the quality up rather than letting the sequel be just mediocre.
Strange coincidence - I was playing this game last night for the first time in years. I've always had a soft spot for this game, although ultimately, I prefer Spider-Man Vs The Kingpin. Any of you guys ever play that?
This game is just plain fun from start to finish - you can't really fault it. Nice simple controls and a cool use of Spider-Man and Venom's powers. Again, the webslinging isn't as fun as The Kingpin game but the fighting is probably better.
But yeah, the Carnage boss is hard. I got beat on the final level against him last night, I completly forgot the strategy I used to beat him with as a kid. Nailed me with a sucker punch with that extending arm of his and that was the end of that chapter!

Nowhere near as good as this one. A simple, 2 player version of Maximum Carnage with a new storyline and villains would've sufficed - instead you get random heroes popping up and helping you fight a bunch of lame symbiotes with unimpressive controls and lame graphics - the visuals were a huge step down and the fighting just isn't much fun.

Ah yes! Spider-Man vs. the Kingpin. One of my cousins owned that game. That's like the greatest Spidey game I've ever played.

Maximum Carnage is, without a doubt, one of the best beat-em-ups I have ever played. My only, and I do mean only (other than the lack of two player), complaint is that it is just too damn hard. I've never beaten it, which is something I rarely say about games I've played. I enjoy a game that makes you work hard to win, which is growing increasingly rare. But, when a seasoned pro (there's that ego of mine) can't even get close to the last level, you have a problem.
Separation Anxiety is a good game, but didn't come anywhere near as close to awesome as Maximum Carnage did. Two player and a slightly easier difficulty were appreciated, but gameplay took a turn for the worse.

Maximum Carnage was good fun for a while, but it was too repetitive and too hard. I never managed to beat it.
Separation Anxiety was easier. My brother and I beat it on a two-player game. However, it had lamer graphics and took the repetition to ludicrous levels. For most of the game it seems like you beat up the same guy wearing different colored outfits.

I never cared for this game. The Acclaim games always annoyed me for some reason. The only Spidey game I was into during that time period was the Sega arcade one with Black Cat, Namor(WTF was he doing there) and Hawkeye.

It's a shame that arcade game was never released for a home system. It was pretty awesome.

Fun game which I really wanted to play as it came out when I was a major comic fan, and the magazines were talking about the games "amazing comic book inspired cut scenes." As far as Final Fight clones go it was pretty dang good, but man was it hard. This was like Double Dragon 3 level hard and that was somewhat of a turn off.

I remember the commercial for this. I think I have it on tape somewhere.
You know, where the sky turns red, everybody's running away panicked in the streets, and a giant Carnage appears out of the clouds...

Have the commercial on my Marvel Matinee tape.

I gotta say, this is one of the only 2 spider-Man games I enjoyed which were designed by Ljn interactive, the second game is the fisrt Spider-Man game I ever bought: "THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN". The sequels to this black and white gameboy game never pleased me as much as this one
