1982 SEPTEMBER 25

Twenty-five years ago, ABC-TV debuted a new 90-minute Saturday morning omnibus series from Hanna-Barbera, featuring Pac-Man, the Little Rascals and Richie Rich. Lead voices included Marty Ingels as Pac-Man and Patty Maloney as Darla Hood.

Although Pac-Man was billed first in the series' umbrella title, he didn't appear until the last half-hour. Most Pac-Man stories combined elements of The Flintstones and Smurfs with aspects of the video games.

The Little Rascals were easily the most underrated part of the series. Though these cartoons were mostly faithful to the 1922-45 short films produced by Hal Roach and MGM, Hanna-Barbera brought the Rascals into the 1980s, with home computers and commercial television. Other changes included the Rascals having their base of operations in a treehouse and Buckwheat becoming a gadgeteer. Why won't King World let these cartoons be shown on Boomerang?

Richie Rich had all-new stories for the 1982-83 season, but no cast changes from his first two seasons. The H-B character designs were a vast improvement over those in the then-still-running Harvey Comics -- especially Gloria! Harvey should have updated the Richie Rich comic books to match the animated show.

Happy 25th anniversary to Pac-Man, Darla and all of their animated co-stars!

Regarding Little Rascals/Richie Rich:
* Some of the Little Rascals boys are voiced by girls - Julie Dees voiced Alfalfa, and B.J. Ward voiced Porky.
* Scott Melville voiced Spanky, this was I think the first cartoon voice work ever for Scott Melville who still does cartoon voices today (currently voicing Shaggy in Kids WB on CW's "Shaggy and Scooby Get a Clue").
* Richie Rich's voice is now teenage deeper thanks to Sparky Marcus reaching teenage puberty or something like that.
* New character in Richie Rich cartoons: Mayda Munny.
* And King World is now CBS Syndication and may not still own the Little Rascals/Our Gang rights (Classic Media and/or MGM may still have the Little Rascals/Our Gang rights).

A few corrections:
* You're right about Julie Dees and B.J. Ward doing boy voices, but Julie had three roles (Alfalfa, Porky and Woim) and B.J. had two (Butch and Waldo).
* Scott's surname is Menville.
* I knew about Mayda Munny from the Richie Rich comics but had forgotten that she was also part of the animated cast. I think Mayda appeared in only a few shorts.

I recall this anthology series---part of the then-craze of trying to link unconnected shows together under one anthology "show"...

Pac-Man:
I liked this show, including recalling eating the cereal spun off from it (with Pac-Man-shaped marshmallows)

Little Rascals:
Yep, I liked this one as well, in addition to watching the original theatrical shorts that were still airing on weekday afternoon TV at the time.

Any idea who owns the rights to this show nowadays? I assume CBS (via King World) owns this show, since per Wikipedia they own the trademark on the name "Little Rascals": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Rascals#Status_of_ownership

Richie Rich:
Always liked this one as a kid---Irona was cool...plus it had a catchy theme song.

I absolutely remember watching this just for the Pac-Man cartoons. It was my favorite show out of all of them. It probably led me to watching all of ABC's cartoons for the season. Then I switched over to CBS for a while.

All I can say in this thread is: Splendid Good Pac-Man Is Be!
