I was bored today, and got an idea for a thread. Strangest manga -> anime edits. In case anybody didn't know what this is, it's when a scene in the manga is toned down or redrawn when it gets animated for various reasons. Now, the only rule is that you have to give reasons when you list your picks.
I'll start it off:
In the manga of One Piece's little garden arc MS. Valentine while crushing Usopp sat on his stomach.
In the anime, she sat on his back.
Reason is that it makes really no sense why they would change it. Usopp's still getting crushed either way.

Bleach:
That the first wave of hollows Ichigo fights were lackeys sent by Grand Fisher. Doesn't really add much to the story.

Naruto:
Kaiza's arms being beaten instead of chopped off, seriously, if if Buu can violently kill Babidi not seven years earlier why the edit?
Kakashi's Lightening Blade not going all the way through Haku like it did in the comic.
Zabuza not beheading Gatô: seriously, it's not THAT violent...

It's not really strange as a reason was provided, but in the early episodes of Detective Conan, two stories from the manga featuring The Black Organization were altered to remove the Organization's involvement.
5. The Shinkansen's Bomb Case:
Manga- Conan finds the men who poisoned him, and learn their codenames (Gin & Vodka). They get away in the middle of the story.
Anime- They are merely lookalikes. While they get away, they're convieniently apprhended.
12. The Strange Person Hunt Murder
Manga- Masami Hirota (aka Akemi Miyano) runs into the masterminds behind the crime (Gin and Vodka). She offers to give them a billion yen that she stole to pay for the freedom of herself and her sister (Shiho Miyano). She is shot in the end with Conan catching up with her. He tells her his real name as she is going to be dead within minutes. She tells him where to find the stolen money and that the masterminds are part of a Syndicate and that high ranking members dress in black. Giving Conan a clue to their identity.
Anime- Masami/Akemi runs into the mastermind behind the crime (some guy named Okita). She offers to give him a billion yen that she stole to pay for her freedom. Okita attempts to shoot her, but the bullet merely grazes her. Conan is able to stop him with his sneakers on full power. Akemi tells him where to find the stole yen and turns herself in.
As for why those episodes were changed, the anime writers thought to stretch out the early episodes by keeping them standalone. Due to Akemi's death being important to the plot, the writers had to redo the story for episode 128 matching the manga's ending. Though no reference is made to episode 12.
As a note, episode 54 (Game Company Murder) was somewhat of an error as Conan shouldn't know the codenames of the men in black or about their organization.
While not an edit, they are redrawn, so I figure they count.
Inuyasha had alot of the violence toned down when it went from manga to anime,at least in earlier episodes.....
Sesshomaru actually gouges Inuyasha's eye to get the black pearl out, unlike in the anime...
In the manga, instead of merely biting into his brother Manten's head to get his powers,Hiten rips out his brother's heart and eats it...
The flesh-eating Noh mask was alot creepier in the manga....instead of having a black blob body,in the manga, its body was made up of all the people it consumed (you could see their heads, arms, legs in the blob)...
The "Peach Man" story happens later in the anime (in the manga,it's the last story before Sango is introduced)....and is heavily changed, apparently due to Tokajin ("Peach Man") being a cannibal in the manga (In the anime,Inuyasha has to fight his way out of a gourd Tokajin carries, after Inuyasha gets shrunk down, and at the same time,he's turning human because it's the night of the new moon....in the manga,he still gets shrunk down/turns human, but has to fight his way out of Tokajin's stomach after being swallowed by him)...

Except things like Tetsuo smoking in Hikaru no Go were still edited out years after Evangelion, so evidently it wasn't -quite- that effective.
And apparently the reason that Gurren Lagann's 6th episode was so much recap is that they thought it was -too- fanservice-y... or at least, that's the rumor I heard, and also that it would be unedited on the DVDs, but I don't know how accurate that is.
But, yeah the Tetsuo thing kind of -was- my example there...
Oh, well, you know, the big one for me other than that would be the cutting of the entire Jinchu Arc of Rurouni Kenshin from the anime... the first OVA (Trust and Betrayal, or Tsuiokuhen) that covered Kenshin's past lived up to or surpassed that part of the manga, but Reflections (Seisouhen in Japanese, I think...?) was a horrible way to end the series, and only covered a very little amount of the entire rest of the arc. Not so much a change as a glaring and undeserved omission, but you know...
About the beheading: Yeah, you wouldn't think it was all that violent per se, but I guess beheadings get special consideration in Japan or something, since Saito's beheading of Akamatsu was off-screen in the anime of Kenshin as well. Then again, Kenshin's anime in general toned down the violence in the manga quite a bit...

Er, I meant that ever since Evangelion aired, it caused an uproar with parents and censorship has increased dramatically for Japanese television since then. So what was acceptable in DBZ back in the 80s would never fly with shows these days (unless they air on a satellite channel like Elfen Lied did) But as far as basic cable goes, no, we won't see that anytime soon.
And yeah, decapitation is a touchy subject for Japanese media, probably because it was a major part of their punishment for crimes back in the feudal era.

Whistle!
Manga
When Sho says that Mizuno is taking his anger onto the field. Mizuno says he's not. In the end, Mizuno tries to punch Shige. Sho, covers shields Shige. In the end, it's Mizuno that gets punched by Sho.
In the anime, this gets edited out.
The mini stories in the manga version has Sho, Shige playing Futsal with Masahiro against other high school kids.
Once again, this gets edited out in the anime.
Yuki's brother; Akito appears twice. With the latter half as a chaperone to play Futsal, along with Sho's brother; Ko. And an early part when Yuki is at home and she goes into her brother's room.

I've got a couple more to add for Inuyasha:
- The anime for some reason stipulated that Kagome needed jewel shards to use the well. The manga said no such thing. The anime tries to compensate for its assertion by occasionally stating that she "borrowed" shards from somewhere else when she lost hers, but eventually the entire party loses all of them, and she can use the well just the same.
- The anime invented both Sesshoumaru's light whip and the stripes on his wrists. Which wouldn't be such a big deal if it weren't for constant fanbrat whining that Takahashi keeps making "errors" in her manga because she always "forgets" to draw his stripes.
- There's so much wrong with episode 26, I could make an entire sub-topic ranting about it. But for some key points:
*The anime cut the conversation in which it is explained that the youkai that Midoriko fought was a fusion of youkai to a human soul that lusted after Midoriko, just like Naraku with Kikyou.
*The anime cut the conversation that introduced the existence of Magatsuhi. Anyone reading the current manga chapters knows why this is important.
*After massively abridging the explanation of the Shikon no Tama, the anime added a battle scene which involved the soul of the fossilized youkai to become resurrected. The battle that ensued somehow implied that Inuyasha was related to Midoriko and Kirara was her pet. This is all total BS.
- The anime has an obsession with Bakuryuuha (Backlash Wave). In the manga, Bankotsu never achieved an energy attack with his sword that Inuyasha could counter with the Bakuryuuha. He just sliced the guy in half. Later, in the manga, Inuyasha originally killed Entei when Kikyou broke Hakudoushi's barrier. In the anime, there was an added chase and fight scene in which Inuyasha cornered Entei in a cave in order to Bakuryuuha him, too.

In the manga vegeta chop off guido head whit his bare hand. In the anime he shot a beam to cut his head off. The change never made any sense?

Yet no mention of Kikyo's introduction?

Hayate the Combat Buttler- The manga is an awesome refrence fest with a fair bit of comedic blood.
The anime is a gawdawful adapation that seeks to cover up every single instance of blood with some sort of USB Dongle Goblin.
CensorCrapery seeks the end of good anime.

Dude it's call censoring, you can get away with more stuff in the manga than the anime.
In the One Piece anime, some things were changed;
- Luffy's past wasn't fully explored in the anime until after the events at Shells Town when he added Zoro to his crew. In the manga, it's the first chapter.
- Similarly, Zoro's past wasn't adapted until after the Kuro arc, when it was seen as a flashback during the manga's version of Shells Town.
- The Gaimon story was adapted after the Kuro arc. In the manga, it was told before the Kuro arc (presumably shifted in the anime to introduce Usopp sooner).
- Gold Roger's death sentence is different in every version. In the manga he was beheaded, in the original anime he was stabbed in the chest, in the 4Kids dub he was hung.
- A part of the Logue Town arc was extended, where Sanji entered a cooking contest to win a rare Blue Tuna fish. In the manga, he merely bought it.

One Piece:
Manga: When the Going Merry falls from Skypiea, they land in the middle of the ocean.
Anime: When the Going Merry falls from Skypiea, they land in a Marine fortress.
Manga: The Davy Back Fight only had 3 events.
Anime: The Davy Back Fight had 6 events.
Manga: The Strawhats encounter Ao Kiji at Longring Longland island.
Anime: The Strawhats encounter Ao kiji at a unnamed island.
Bobobo:
The manga was pretty bloody, but in the anime, there's no blood at all.

A lot of the edits aren't very strange at all. Many of them are either logical forms of censorship or ways to add filler.
Now, what IS a silly edit is in the Flame of Recca anime, where they cut out several character interaction scenes only to replace them with their own (and IMO inferior); added several scenes of Domon getting his ass kicked and even making several of his badass scenes look severely less so, such as when he got Recca and Mikagami to stop fighting each other during the fight with Neon's team and his entrance during his fight with Magensha; completely changed Raiha's personality and removed most of the scenes he had with Fuuko, and had Domon get trapped with Fuuko during the second round of the tournament; completely removing Joker until the final round; and too many more to count. Though silly, the shortening of the final round including the removal of Joker's fight, and the entire trainwreck of a last episode were logical in that it was trying to very quickly wrap up most of the loose ends and make it feel climactic (though failing).

Well, I'll just say that none of them are as present as 4Kids' rendition of the edits. The ones on Bandai Entertainment, FUNimation, Geneon & VIZ are of little (to none). The ones on 4Kids though, the animes themselves would be practically unwatchable.

From my understanding, that whole thing is a joke intended to poke fun at censorship. And I do find it funny... sometimes...

By the third or so time, the joke got thin, that's why you don't have the Peter to quagmire transformer's transition on every episode of family guy.
