View Full Version : Would you have watched Doozy Bots?

So with all the SD Gundam 20th anniversary hoopla, I went back and watched the pitch trailer for this. It's pretty much agreed by all that this was a real 'dodged a bullet'. But if this HAD been picked up and the series was released at the time, would you have watched it?
Whilst this is a light discussion, the question is all so semi-serious. Please no one reply if you're going to rant about how crappy it would be in some attempt to look like an uber awesome fanboy.
Personally, I imagine at the age I was at the time I may very well have watched it. For me it feels like one of those shows ITV would have aired back in there 'Mr Motivator' days.

What, you know not of the Doozy Bots (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=e8um1N78AhY), who must combat evil robots who want to rob the world of FUN?"
PS - don't ask me why the Doozy Bots, after capturing the entire evil robot gang, actualy let them go instead of, you know, taking them in!
As for whether I would've watched this, it certainly would've piqued my interest if I were younger, because I would've known next to nothing about Gundam and its original history. I mean, I watched Hammer Man (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=w8WYh8uz3pQ) and Pro Stars (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=px5njG8ikvo) knowing next to nothing about why they were created, so Doozy Bots would've been no different.

Sure, if I were a silly kid that didn't know any better. I was all over Saban-produced Dragon Ball and other such things.

God, this looks bad. Really bad. And I'm sure I'm making an understatement.

You even couldn't pay me to watch that show.
It's Gundam gone 2 year olds.

Would I have watched "Doozy Bots"? Well if I can enjoy old "He-man" and "Superfriends" episodes than I'm sure the stupid in this one wouldn't affect me to much. Then again I actually would have loved to see Saban's "Sailor Moon" show get made (assuming we still got the original animated version of course.) Meh, I just don't really have a problem with blatant stupidity in a show like if it at least looks like they're trying. The only stuff I really hate is soulless cookie cutter stuff in which the staff obviously put no creative effort at all.

At the age I was at the time it was supposed to come out (13) I probably wouldn't have watched it. Heck, just seeing the promo made me sick (but then again it may be because I'm a fan of Gundam).

Honestly? This was a bad idea that got refined to an ok idea with SDGF and then cleanly refined to awesome with SDGF's second season (from what I hear, can't even do the illisit things with that show, hens teeth, much?)

Funny that you should bring up SD Gundam Force, I always thought that show was pretty God-awful. Moreso after I saw the original SD Gundam shorts and how awesome they were as a parody of the show. Admittedly I didn't watch it that religiously, but what I did watch I really didn't like that much, and that was enough for me.
As for whether I would have watched... well, there was I time when I was desperate for anything Gundam, even though I hadn't seen much of it (I guess I liked the old Gundam Wing toys... to be fair, the Katoki redesigns are pretty cool, even if the Endless Waltz versions were way over the top... oh, and the Battle Scarred series was admittedly awesome), so then I -might- have, but I might also have thought it was terrible. I mean, I -watched- G Gundam, but I always thought it was a little odd, and this show looked like it would have been even -less- of a real Gundam show...
This is all excluding the fact that I would have been about four-five months old when the show started airing. So I guess "no" for physical impossibility reasons, my pride as a Gundam fanboy aside. Otherwise, I'd like to think 'no,' but I had crappy taste at several points in my life, so... *shrugs*
You know, I think my biggest complete fanboy complaint against this series is that the Jagd Doga's (I think this is right, been a while since I subjected myself to THE HORROR) shoulder-mounted shields aren't armed with -missiles-, they're freakin' FUNNELS. I like funnels, they're a part of what made Char's Counterattack have some of the greatest mecha action ever.
The funniest complaint is that the guy in the wheelchair becomes the Guntank. They let him transfer his consciousness into a robot, and they -still- wouldn't give him the ability to walk? Ouch.
On a side note... does anyone know who actually gave the go-ahead for this idea (I mean, to the point where they would even -consider- it)? I can't believe that Tomino, who was supposedly depressed during Victory Gundam over Bandai and Sunrise's merger or somesuch, wouldn't... you know, start throwing chairs across the office when he heard about this (I'm only -slightly- exaggerating some of the things I've heard, which admittedly may not be reliable, so don't take me too seriously, please). Rumor has it the guy is not fun to work for...

Again, this is not asking if you would watch this today but back when it was originally planned.
Though I'd also point out yet again that SDGF is actually very close to the majority of SD Gundam. Fansubbers might have focused on the parody takes but the majority of it and what made it so popular was its own multiverse, including the Knight, Musha and Commander stuff.

I understand that but I still picked:
ZOMG what a disgrace!!!12
Becuase they need to speed their time and money making more regular gundam shows.

In younger days, I used to watch anything on Saturday monring, so it was likely I would have gotten into Doozey Bots. Then latter on in life, utterly regret it and post on a forum describing how pathetic I was back in the day for watching it.

Going by that, of course I'd probably watch it. I probably wouldn't know any better.

Doozy Bots was just an attempt pushed by suits who wanted to enforce political correctness on children's television at the time. No matter how much I watch it, that's how it looked like. I'm glad those days of brow beating are over. Seriously...a guy in a flying wheelchair? No, just no.

I'm glad that the Toon Maker's Sailor Moon never happened and the DiC version was put out instead. The DiC version didn't follow all the other stereotypes that female oriented shows were plagued with (like the Toon Makers version) back then and actually raised the bar on how female oriented super hero shows should be presented: more drama and more limitations on who you are. Besides, the DiC version did what I thought was the impossible: draw in the male audience. Yes, even male cartoon viewers got hooked onto Sailor Moon. There is even a rumour that half of the British Royal Air Force got hooked onto Sailor Moon even though it was played as a joke. The Toon Makers version was just a bunch of stereotypes and political correctness rolled into one. It was about time someone broke the mold.

Look we're all aproaching this from the wrong mindset. If Doozy Bots had aired in the early 90s we wouldn't be old enough to figure out it was a messed up SD Gundam reappropriation and probably like it. Now... aw hell no.
Asking this is like asking "Would you have liked Power Rangers in 1993 if you knew it was a chopped up version of Zyuranger?".

Or better yet, "Would you have liked Voltron: Defender of the Universe in 1984 if you knew it was chopped versions of Golion and Dairugger, and the Norwegian fellow actually died in the Japanese version and that was actually his brother later in the show."

Except this series only used mecha designs... Point taken.
I wish somebody would make a tongue-in-cheek animated short of Doozy Bots in which they have special guest stars Shaun Aska and Sandy F. Sayhay as Destiny and Exia Doozybots.
