Forgive me, for I am a poor little stupid newbie and am clueless on how to make or get avatars. Please help me. :(

Here's the answer, right from the F.A.Q. section in the menu bar above (without the hyperlinks):

These small images are called Avatars. They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make. In order to have an avatar, you need to have made at least 10 posts. If you meet that requirement, go to the change avatar section of the edit options page. Select "yes" next to "custom avatar", then enter the url of the file you wish to use, or browse your hard drive for one. An avatar must be a valid .gif or .jpg image, and may not exceed 75 by 75 pixels or 10240 bytes.
