I came across this comic book cover while surfing around the Internet tonight. It looks like the Coyote finally caught up with the Road Runner!!
And the Road Runner looks pretty mean, doesn't he??

Obviously, the cover artist had been fed a visual diet of too many of the Lariva Road Runner before working on his drawing ;)

Oh yes, the Road Runner was actually pretty mean to Wile E. Coyote in the comic books. The Road Runner talked, had four sons and a wife, and used such Looney Tunes characters as Daffy, Elmer, and Yosemite Sam as allies!
There was a pretty funny story in the only issue of DAFFY DUCK & THE ROAD RUNNER (I believe this was the only one, and I have it), in which the Road Runner teaches Daffy his secrets to his speed. When Daffy is immitating him (complete with the "Beep! Beep!"), Wile E. catches him, and the coyote is constantly kicking the duck's rear end!
I also have a Road Runner comic with Wile E. dressed as an Indian on the cover. I also have a little book containing quite a few comic strips from the short lived Road Runner comic strip, and a "Big Little Book" with the Road Runner, his family, Wile E. Coyote, and some Russian spies. :p

I always thought the Road Runner comics worked better than the rest because they weren't obligated to follow the cartoons at all, kind of like how Carl Barks had his greatest success with Scrooge McDuck. Instead they branched out and found their own purpose. It was weird, what with all the rhyming, but it was unique.

I still have a jigsaw puzzle from my childhood that pictures Wile E. getting ready to pull a sack over a "dummy" Road Runner (with a carrot for a beak!) that has dynamite attached to it; the real Road Runner is behind a cactus getting ready to push the detonator.
