Hey Herc,

hope things are well cos I'm about to break some bad news: Futurama didn't get picked up for next season:(

I heard from one of the writers today(Eric Kaplan who wrote 'Parasites Lost' amoung others) and he said this:

"We didn't get our pick-up. The show might come back, but it won't have me on it or any of the other writers. Kind of a shock for all of us, but them's are the breaks."

Just when you thought FOX couldn't suck anymore they do!! This is a sad day indeed, why not re-encourage everyone to go to the William S Paley Festival to meet the Futurama writers(if it's still on) cos that might be the last ever Futurama gathering! take care

reed

And it's confirmed by others there too.

Wow, the earth really wants the smart people to die.

The tick, zim, family guy, now futurama. Way to fekkin go. this is...like, ungodly. All the good shows are being cancelled! All the shows we love are being cancelled for no good reason, other than the masses are getting stupider and stupider, and non-wrestling/gay/reality/extreme programming has no chance to succeed! Big media companies think that the smart viewer base doesn't matter? Doesn't bring em the big bucks? I'll show them how much my viewer base is worth...$22.5 MILLION IN DAMAGES! ARRRRGH! THAT IS IT!

Looks like FOX is getting rid of their less successful animated series. I wouldn't be surprised if FOX begins airing a regular FOOTBALL show next fall even during the off season. The treatmenrt for FUTURAMA has been terrible, and it would certainly strive on a different night. Why not bump the horrid THAT 80'S SHOW for a few weeks, and let FUTURAMA draw in a new audience? I'm gonna miss this show...

Well, now we know just how stupid Fox is ("Even stupider than WB.")

Let's find out how smart CN-Adult Swim is.

Man, what is with big, brainless corporations these days? First Invader Zim is cancelled, then Hasbro decides not to do a Justice League toy line, and now Futurama, one of the best television shows on network TV, is cancelled too. I'll bet that they won't even bother to air anymore episodes...they'll just pre-empt it up til May.

In a perfect world Zim, the Planet Express crew, and the Justice League would team-up and nuke those sorry sons of *****es. But sadly that won't happen. And good luck trying to get Futurama back. They never bring back shows...unless it's The Family Guy.

Way to go, Fox. First, you canned The Tick, then Family Guy. Then, you're letting The Simpsons die a slow creative death. Now, you're killing your best animated show since the earlier eps of The Simpsons. And you're leaving on an animated show that may as well be filmed with live action stupid Texans.

Congrats. You've lost a viewer. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Hopefully, CN can pull enough weight to get both Futurama and Family Guy on Adult Swim instead of letting 'em lanquish in television limbo.

Mela (And after such a good episode...)

02-12-2002, 04:23 PM
They don't even have enough episodes for syndication! They're around at least fifty...and 100 is the standard. And we'll may never get closure on a couple of the long-running storylines...

Does anyone remember my saying that I won`t mind when the simpsons it cancelled because "futurama could easily take it`s place for years to come?"

Anyone remember my saying that as much as I ADORED invader zim, "I can still turn to fox for FUTURAMA?"

There is now absolutely nothing on television that I can watch.Nothing.I don`t even like adult swim as much as any of the shows that have been cancelled (I DO like adult swim, mind you,but the entire thing isnt half as entertaining to me as a single episode of "invader zim" OR futurama was!)

After supporting television for my entire life,I am officially now one of those people who just plain doesnt like it.I`m never watching tv again.

Did a retarded monkey write that petition letter? I'm almost ashamed to sign my name to it. But I suppose it's volume that matters. Speaking of which, how many shows have ever been saved by petition letters? I know it's happened a couple of times at least.

I saved some magazines from when Futurama was about to premiere. The rumblings were HUGE. It had potential marketability that far exceeded The Simpsons (Matt Groening was talking about movies, games, even a THEME PARK). This show was larger than life. WHY DOES FOX WANT TO KILL IT? WHY? WHY? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHYWHYWHWYWHWYWHWY WYYHYHYWYWHYHWYHWYYY?

As someone who's been burned one too many times by Ain't It Inaccurate News’s rumors I'll believe that Futurama has been canceled when it's announced by a more credible source.

Such as, click the link and scroll down. They seem to have removed the thing by the writer, but there's info from animators who posted on a message boards (peelified.com) and gave info to gotfuturama.com. There's two other sources listed there. AICN isn't the most accurate site in the world, but I doubt that they heard from 3 people who apparently had connections to the show that it would be cancelled for no reason. And gotfuturama.com apparently has a few contacts who confirmed it. AICN's just passing the word on.

If this is true (and I wouldn't doubt it) all I can say is:

@*&()@#*&@##^**@#&!!!

I... I just can't take this anymore. I can't take the stupidity I've been seeing from TV networks recently. I mean, really, if all my favorite shows disappeared, what would I watch? In fact, the process has already begun. I'm already very upset with Nick and am close on turning my back on them forever (despite how much I loved them as a child, which is sad), and now FOX kicks off Family Guy and Futurama :( My little cartoon-loving heart is breaking *sniff*

I don't see how networks expect shows to succeed when they're pre-empted all the time. Futurama, the Tick. What's the point of having the shows if they're not going to show it? And then they use poor ratings as an excuse for the cancellation? Hmm, I wonder why. I haven't been a regular Futurama watcher: 1. because I always forget it's on 2. When I don't forget it's often been pre-empted 3. a lot of times I don't have the time. But I was looking forward to watching it more often, especially next year after TXF leaves. Well, until there's an official announcement, I suppose we can keep our fingers crossed.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"

This Futurama quote perfectly sums up the situation with the show. Futurama is the grasshopper and Fox is the octopus. To see what we'll be missing out on if the show is cancelled, check out these other quotes: http://us.imdb.com/Quotes?0149460

The show's been pre-empted by football all season long. I haven't seen a single episode since the season finale last spring since its never seemed to be on.

Can't say I'm surprised. With next season having no Futurama & X-Files, and its shows like Undeclared, That 80s Show, Ally McBeal(you know a shows in the toilet when they give her a kid), and 24 getting crap ratings you can't exactly get excited about the network who at this point in time only really has 2 hits on their hands, the Simpsons and Malcolm, and the earlier is dying a slow death.

It sounds like they'll be using the backlog of episodes (mentioned in the other Futurama thread) to make up something resembling a 5th season, but it'll be kinda short.

This show would be great for Adult Swim. C'mon, CN...

Cartoon Network would only pay to syndicate the show, not to renew it.

As others said, the animators and writers are finding other jobs now, so they won't be able to contribute to a new season if they tried. Plus Futurama is just a wee bit too expensive for Cartoon Network's taste.

Would it be a great ratings draw to syndicate? Hell yes. Williams Street puts out a new ad for every new episode that premieres on Adult Swim, including episodes that have aired on other networks. Futurama would get great promotion, and would definitely boost Adult Swim's ratings from its current 1.2 standpoint to between 3.5-4.0 at the least.

If they got Family Guy AND Futurama, they'd be the kings of late night.

Well I'm a little surprised if it's true. I had hoped after the Simpsons popularity, FOX would have treated it's kid sister with a little more respect...

But then Futurama deals directly with Satan himself - or so the Network bosses would believe. Yes, the spawn of the devil - science fiction.

If you ever want to see a network boss scrabble out of a window in fear, mention the fact you have a science fiction concept to sell to him.

Clearly it's the same in the US as it is all over the world...

I thought the reason that Groening signed the Simpsons extension was so that Fox would hold onto Futurama as well? Is that misinformation or did Fox double-cross (legally albeit) their agreement?

That didn't stop FOX from thrice saying "screw you" to Chris Carter, creator of what was for a few years anyway, the highest rated show on the block. Millenium did alright for a few years, but met quick cancellation after the show was widely revamped. Unfortunately the ending of the show in an X-Files episode wasn't a very good resolution, although you can't really blame FOX for that.
CC next spends months on a series called Harsh Realm only to see it cancelled after 3 episodes, being dumped in the worst time slot possible.
Another year goes by, and the third CC series comes, the Lone Gunmen. The best of all, this looked like it could be a worthy replacement for the soon retiring X-Files. FOX said if its ratings were at a certain level, the show would be renewed. The show reached those levels. FOX cancelled it anyway.

No one is sacred with FOX. Aaron Spelling, David Kelly, Chris Carter, Matt Greoning, etc... regardless of how big of a hit they may have created.

It really is unfortunate, because at this rate I don't see the network surviving much longer. At least they have the News Channel, which does pretty well for itself.

My faith in FOX dropped when they put that stupid "Get Into It" Ad on their DVDs, (Thank god they didn't put it on The Simpsons set) I wanted to strangle whoever thought that was a good idea! Then They cancle good shows, and now this?!? This is the last straw!!!! Mark my words, Fox is going to crash ,and burn with Malcom, That Decade Show, Ally McBeal, Temptation Island, and NFL! What's next. the suites sticking their grubby little hands on X-Men 2?!? The Simpsons can't last for ever, you know! Let Futurama take it's place, and give Matt Georening the respect he deserves!! The metaphore on mentioning Sci Fi to a network executive reminds me of a Chris Rock bit where he talks about the difference between black people, and gang members. He says that if you want them to stop stealing money from you, you put the money in your books. Because gang members don't read. The moral is that Sci-Fi is to network executives what books are to gang members. like Kryptonite. Broadcast TV is dead! The future is in cable, and satellite!

Dare I say it, I'd rather watch the WB than Fox (and that's surprising, considering I'm in the twilight of my teens and I don't like "Smallville").

I liked "Futurama"...when I watched it.

I blocked out the Fox network on my TV ages ago, but I would unblock it to watch the occasional "Futurama" (when I could) or "Simpsons" (when I liked watching it).

Times change, I guess.

Sincerely,

MmmHmm, apparently that USA show La Femme Nikita had been abruptly cancelled, but the fans did some similar kind of petition, and ended-up getting the show renewed for one more season (I guess to tie-up loose-ends). Also, isn't it just frigging awsome that Futurama gets cancelled and (barf) Friends gets renewed. I love network TV.
