The first nominees for the first ever Best Animated Film for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (and other Oscar nods) were given this morning in Los Angeles.
Instead of five nominees, the Academy felt it was appropriate to give only three nominations in the category. The nominees are:
Shrek (PDI/Dreamworks)
Monsters, Inc. (Pixar/Disney)
and . . . (cue drumroll)
Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (Nickelodeon/Paramount)
In a year that saw a record number of animated films, including Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Waking Life, and a slew of others, these three were considered the best of the best.
Also notice that all three nominees were computer-animated films as opposed to traditional cel animation. Oh well, maybe next year, something handdrawn might win.
In other news, the New Line-produced first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Fellowship of the Rings, received 13 nominations, the most this year, including one for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Sir Ian McKellen, Best Director,
Best Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction, Cinematography, Sound,
Original Score, Original Song, Costume, Film Editing, Makeup,
and Visual Effects. Not bad, but I wonder how much pressure this will give the second installment, The Two Towers, later in the year.
