That is not fair. Planet of the apes should have been nominated for the makeup.

And Jimmy Neutron got nominated?
They are really not taking this categorie seriously. I'm pretty sure now that the oscar will go to Shrek.

It's actually Moulin Rouge, not Monsters, Inc, that's up for Best Picture.

Man, it seems like none of the movies that I like are ever nominated. I'm either avant-garde or just have really, really bad taste! Memento and A.I. weren't nominated for Best Picture, while Hannibal wasn't nominated for anything (it was better than people made it out to be). And, of course, most of the nominations go to films that I haven't heard of and that came out in late December or early January.

Well, go LOTR! Win that Oscar, because, well, nobody else is good enough.

It's great that Harry Potter got nominated for a few things, (I think it should definitley win best music score) but I think It should have also been nominated for best adapted screenplay and best picture. But, then again, those are just the wishes of a pure HP fanboy! :)

See ya!

Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius? I had to read that several times and I STILL don't believe it. If they wanted to create an animated feature category they should have allowed foreign animation to be in it(NO I do not just mean anime, other countries have animation studios as well). With the exception of Harry Potter (which was impressively done for a kids movie), Kids movies just shouldn't get nominated. Shrek and Monster's Inc. should get nominated for computer graphics, but as far as storyline goes, they weren't that great.

I think Ron Howard deserves it for A Beautiful Mind. Not every director can take a movie about a mathematician and make it interesting.

I'm glad LOTR got nominated for a lot of things :) Even though it probably won't win anything big- just technical awards like film editing and cinematography.

LOTR has the third highest nominations in OSCARS history, after TITANIC and the 1950 movie ALL ABOUT EVE. I'm not surprised, it's really good all around movie that surprises and delights on alot of levels. I'm glad to see this movie get so many nominations. You can bet this aspect will be greatly exploited and explored on the LOTR DVD.

Do you think that if Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker was eligible for an Oscar it would beat Shrek or the other animated nominees?

Please don't take this as a simply Batfan question. I was looking at that list and trying to think of animated features I actually liked... there were none. Shrek was cute, but I think it's not a good story. Same goes for Monster's Inc. It seems that this year there were no films like Beauty and the Beast or Perfect Blue. In fact BB: ROTJ was the only (animated) film I think of that would realy be worthy of an Oscar.

3 African-Americans nominated in the best actor/actress category? How rare is that?

Also, thats funny how "a beautiful mind" gets a makeup nod over "Planet of the Apes". Guess the academy is a little sick of Rick Baker.

1) Tick gets cancelled
2) Family Guy gets cancelled
3) Futurama gets cancelled
4) Jimmy Neutron gets an Oscar nomination.

Yeah, this country is a LONG way off from taking animation seriously. Why the hell Waking Life didn't get nominated is beyond me. It deserves to win over Shrek. I liked Shrek, but Waking Life definately deserves the award. There is no way I can ever take award ceremonies seriously, and this just gives me one more reason not to.

.......................................................Jimmy Neutron is nominated?! You might as well get Veggie Tales up, there, it makes as much sense!

That clinches it...2002 is gonna need a damn miracle if it wants to lose its current title of 'Worst year for Animation in the USA'.

Let's not forget "Ben Hur", which got 14 nominations, the same amount as "Titanic", back when there were fewer categories to be nominated in. It probably has the greatest percentage of Oscar nominations yet.

I haven't seen "Monsters Inc", but if you think "Shrek" is a kid's movie then I have to wonder if you actually saw it. It is most definitely not a kid's movie. If you're going to generalize animation like this, then I'm glad I disagree with you.

Not too rare: it happened in 1972 with Paul Winfield, Cicely Tyson (both from Sounder) and someone else whose name escapes me; Diana Ross for Lady Sings the Blues? As an African-American who hopes to be a filmmaker, this is very good news.

Yeah?! Well, T.T.T.(Hudsucker Proxy reference, unpostable at this board in its unabridged form)! Regardless what one thinks of the movie, one cannot deny that Baker's makeup is unparalled. Well, not exactly; his Oscar-winning work on "The Grinch" is POTA's closest rival, makeup-wise. This is a huge disappointment. From the moment I saw the film, I thought that Rick's work was a lock. I thought to myself, "They should just mail Rick Baker his Oscar".

And another thing:

"Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" for Best Animated Film? I've not yet seen it, so I can't pick up a torch and run it out of town like the rest of you are doing. However, I really think that the third slot belonged to "Atlantis", arguably one of Disney's best films of late (and who'd want to argue?). I heard about how Disney didn't want to have two films in the running for the new category: "Oh, we don't want a competition, blah, blah, blah." To that I say this: Screw not wanting to have competition! It's happened with other studios at Oscar time. Also, they don't understand that, while competition isn't life, life definitely is competition.

I agree that A. I. and Momento are shafted here. Why is it always with boring melodrama's you couldn't get me in the theater to sit through, please.

Animated catogorie added and it's the three most comercial ventures of the year. Why wasn't Atlantis in the third slot someone asked. It wasn't CGI and it wasn't as agressively marketed as Shrek.

I really didn't see Atlantis but I can tell this is what the nominees are clearly based on. But ask yourself "What's wrong with this picture?" Final Fantasy is shafted. Why? It beats the heck out of Shreck. And believe me folks. Shreck has already won.

And it stank.

I do--I thought that Atlantis was horrible. It had everything going for it: Mike Mignola designing the look, actual research done on Atlantis and ancient cultures (there's a reason that they had white hair!)--it could have been good. However, Disney screwed up by skimping on character development and leaving all the characters two-dimensional (did they have any kind or characterizations beyond being "the doctor" and "the dirt guy?").

I would have liked to see Osmosis Jones be nominated. Come on--an animated movie without songs, without fast-food tie-ins, and was actually well-written! Oh well.

Shrek was an amazing piece of work. I think some of you are letting the hype spoil it for you. The same thing happened with Cameron's brilliant Titanic. If Shrek wins, it will be well-deserved.

Actually I should add too that that the animatiom was flawless (but Final Fantasy blew it out of the water). It was the gags that killed it.

So 'A Beautiful Mind' got it for aging make-up and Planet of the Apes' monkeys got shafted. I don't think either would win, though.

RE: Harry Potter. Why wasn't it up for adapted screenplay? I think the problem can be best summed up by looking at how Neville came across. His actions at the end didn't make any sense unless you'd read the book. Which is fine for us Potter fanpeeps, but for everyone else, it's confusing. On the upside, JKR's little chats with the actors helped bring a better understanding of certain characters- especially Snape. It's the cinematic equivalent of a fanart collection as opposed to a comic adaption. But hey, if it wasn't around I wouldn't have my li'l kitty Hermione figure. :D

Hey Mattashell, where is your avatar from?

I was very dissapointed in the lack of Memento here. I was honestly expecting to see at least Guy Peirce get a nomination for his performance, his best since L.A. Confidential. I was also hoping we'd see mroe than three films in the Best Animated Movie category. I mean, who didn't exopect to see these movies in there? They were three big hits so of course they will be in there. Why isn't the brilliant Waking Life in there? Why? Becuase it didn't make a heap of cash like the rest.

If your asking who it is, it's ArCee, the female autobot from Transformers the Movie, and the later seasons of Transformers. (hence the catch phrase "some folks go out of their way for the great taste of R.C. cola").

If your wondering where I found the picture, it's from http://www.transfans.com/

I didn't expect to see Jimmy Neutron in there at all. But it just goes to show you the Oscars are more about money and politics than truly recognizing the best films.

And what scares me the most is now they can release Jimmy Neutron on home video and add "Oscar nominated" above the title.

Harry Potter got nominated for costumes and not visual effects?? That doesn't make any sense. Of course none of these seem to make much sense...Jimmy Neutron...ugh...

For the sake of argument, if you were forced to choose between Atlantis and Jimmy Neutron for the third slot in the Best Animated Film category, which one would you choose?

Note: "Neither" does NOT count as an answer! Nor does some other film, as these are your only choices.

Doesn't it bother anyone else that not one of the three nominees for Best Animated Film was animated by hand?

Ironic, I'd say. Planet Of The Apes, the original managed to snatch the oscar from 2001:A Space Oddessy because the judges allegedly thought the apes in 2001 were actually real...!

Somehow it seems poetic that POTA misses out this time...

BTW, Harry Potter's music IMO was a fairly poor show. Predictable, overly pompous and lacking flair and originality... just like the movie itself really..
