While talking to CINESCAPE’S Anthony C. Ferrante for the March issue of the magazine, FUTURAMA executive producer David X. Cohen reveals the writing staff is governed by a high-tech washing machine.
“One thing we have that most shows don’t is a washer/dryer” Cohen said. “In fact, we’re the only show where while the writers are working, they’re all doing their laundry… [It] is right next door [to the writers’ room] so people are pitching jokes and the washer will go ‘annnnnnnnk’ with this load buzzing sound. So in a sense, the dryer will reject people’s jokes.”
On a more serious vein, Cohen talked about some of the frustrations he’s had with FUTURAMA’s network, Fox. In its 7 p.m. Sunday time slot, the show often goes unaired in football season.
“We did 24 episodes last year, and I believe 10 went unaired,” Cohen said. “Then we made 18 more, so we have 28 episodes in production that have not aired, with 15 scheduled to run this season."
For this and a whole lot more, including an interview with FUTURAMA’s other creator Matt Groening, check out the March issue of CINESCAPE, on stands February 19.
