the date has arrived for one of nintendo's highly anticipated titles to arrive on the scene. with enhanced wii controls and graphics, prime 3 is looking to further improve upon the look and feel of its predecessors. if you've taken any interest in this game or the games that came before it, you already know what it's all about. exploration and shooting things dead
i plan on picking this up after work today and playing until the early hours of the morning. i'm pretty excited about it. i actually wanted to finish super metroid before this, but apparently, according to the metroid retrospective (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?t=194514) this game comes before hand
so, thoughts, concerns, criticisms, acclamations about the game?

Some stores will have it today. The most notable one being the Nintendo store in the Rockafella center in New York. They're giving away free swag with the game there. Makes me wish I lived in New York just for that.

I know Nintendo Power gave it a 10.0. That makes me equal parts excited and skeptical. I'm sure some would think that such a score means little when it comes from a magazine called Nintendo Power, but I've been reading it for years and I've seen them rag on plenty of games that came from the mothership.
I'll be interested to play this game either way. I enjoyed both of the previous Prime games (yes, even Prime 2  ). Of course, I'll have to get a Wii at some point before that can happen. lol

meh. i also think there was nothing wrong with prime 2
from the reviews i've been reading, it sounds like prime 3 is more of the same but with different control and updated graphics. i'm interested to see if the organic "aurora" super computer has anything to do with motherbrain, though
I'm more interested in how Wii controls apply to this.

By all accounts, it's more or less exactly what you'd expect. Aim with the Remote, fire with A (Beam) and D-Pad Down (Missiles), movement with the Nunchuck stick, lock-on with Z. Gesture controls are as follows:
Grapple Beam - Throwing motion with the Nunchuck when locked on to a target
Visor Change - Hold down Minus and flick the Remote up, left or right
Hyper Mode - Plus
Hop in Morph Ball - Flick the Remote up
And various context-sensitive gestures with the Remote such as, according to IGN, "to twist a lock into place, you'd pull back with the peripheral, twist left or right, and then push forward again."
All the accounts I've read say the controls are spot on, and the IR aiming via the Remote makes the GameCube controls feel clunky by comparison.

Hey, I live in New York, but just not close to the city. I'm already getting it from a GameStop that's just a short walk from my building. I still wonder what Nintendo World is giving away with the game though. I'd like to think it's nothing really major.
Circuit City is even guaranteeing that they'll have it as of Tuesday at 2pm. Otherwise, they'll give you a $20 gift card. There's even a Circuit City that's a short walk away from my building also.

To be fair, one of the reviews in Nintendo Power's 10/10, which I feel is a bit of a statistical outlier (especially when there are less than 5 reviews so far).
I, too, will be picking this up tomorrow, and I'll be glad to get started. I don't think it'll be greatness on the level of Bioshock, but I'm sure that it'll be a worthy successor to the Metroid series.
Plus, I'll finally be doing something other than playing Okami or watching MST3K via my Wii.

From what I gather from reading the reviews seems they made alot of the nessicery changes and a few interesting ones
Scanning isn't a tedious or annoying poke quest and has been revised to be easier to accomplish
Boss battles are fun but the game tends to hold your hand as you go thru them(but there is no Spidertrack Guardian-esque annoying bossbattles)
Shooting aspects are streamlined and are very smooth as you go thru the game
Level design is more streamlined so you don't wind up getting lost or stuck in another area and not realising you're supposed to access it later(I.e. MP1) but is also more open in terms of movement and you have a better sense of progression and where to go, the art direction also has been upped severely.
Enemies die better
stuff blows up better
Powerups and upgrades are not just recolored/renamed/.5 versions of upgrades from a previous installment for the most part

There are certain places that you can find them on the internet, which Senator Ted Stevens effectively described as a series of tubes.

Is there a way you can get a Wii to play DVDs...?Yes, it involves a mod chip and burning a loading disc, but it is possible. The legality of mod chips is in question right now (the law against them is on the books, but hasn't been appealed by anyone yet, so it's constitutionality isn't certain yet), so that's as much as I'll share here (actually, it's all I know on that subject anyway).

Actually, I have to disagree there. I loved the way the scanning and log book were set up in Metroid Prime 2. It seems so organized and easy to access for me. Better than the first Metroid Prime. I'm only now starting on MP3, so I'm pretty sure I'll end up liking the logbook set-up, but I'm not liking the visor switch as much.

That you're left-handed shouldn't have any real affect on the controls, and in fact there's an option in the menu to swap the functions of the Plus and Minus buttons on the Remote, effectively flipping the control scheme.
Keep in mind that unlike the GameCube iterations where the Control Stick handled both movement (forward, backward, left, right) and aiming (up, down, left, right), it controls only actual movement here. Aiming is now done exclusively via the Remote. Samus isn't moving without the Stick; she's aiming, i.e. looking in whatever direction you're pointing the Remote once you move the reticle outside the invisible "bounding box" at the center of the screen. Change the sensitivity of the aiming controls in the options if you still can't get the hang of it after you've logged a few hours of gameplay.

Okay, so this "bounding box" isn't like the one in Red Steel that took up the entire screen?

Nope. It's confined to the center of the screen, and its size is dependent upon the sensitivity setting you've chosen in the game options. Keep the reticle inside the box and you'll only aim the weapon inside the box's boundaries. Move it outside the box and Samus will physically look in that direction.

About an hour into it.
Agreed that the Ridley fight was one of the coolest boss battles I've seen in a game in a long while. Couldn't quit thinking of the scene from the second LOTR with Gandalf and the Balrog.
Also lovin' the bounty hunters, they seem like a pretty cool group of dudes.
One big new thing that I'm really liking is the increase in scripted events. I liked that aspect of other games, and MP3 has done well to integrate some more.
I'm still getting used to the controls, but no big difficulties yet.
Well good. Hopefully Prime 3 will show other developers how to use the Wii controls to properly make a FPS for the system, even if said controls take getting used to. The Call of Duty and Farcry ports were pathetic, and I'm hoping with the huge Wii base, developers stand up and take notice.
Having just bought a Wii, and noticing the lack of games developers have made made me worry a bit. I'm just hoping Metroid is the rule rather than the exception for the future.

Man, this game is awesome thus far. That battle with Ridley down the hole was just truly stunning and breath taking. This is the game we all bought our Wiis for. The only complaint I really have is the pointless auto aim lock thing. What does it do? I hold down Z and my gun still shoots way off to the side at times unless I aim it myself. Other than that, I have nothing to complain about. Well, except perhaps turning your head with the remote which is sometimes hard to do in frantic situations and you easily lose track of bosses.

Lock on only centers the camera upon whatever you lock onto. Unlike with the other Prime games, you can still aim in other places while you're locked on. It's useful once you get used to it.
As for the turning thing, I highly recommend switching over to Advanced in the options menu. The "bounding box" is smaller, so turning is faster.
Anyway, I'm already past Bryyo and I'm now in the middle of going through the Skyworld. At this point, I have figured out by far the most difficult thing about this game...and it is having to stop.
But seriously, towards the end of my exploits in Bryyo, some of the Bosses/Mini Bosses really did trip me up. I had a hard time figuring out what to do, or how to do certain things. The game manages to keep things interesting, even if most of the enemies are "reveal the weakpoint and shoot".

Women would probably do the same thing to us, so why not?
So far, I'm up to the part where I've gotten the ability to fire phazon. The fight with Meta Ridley when falling down the pit was intense. I couldn't believe I defeated him there on the first try. Actually I couldn't believe I finished the first boss on the first try either. He nearly finished ME off first.
By the way, when I put my disc in for the first time, my Wii was upgrading. Would anyone happen to know what the upgrade was for?
Hnn, well, I was planning on waiting for this to go down in price before buying it but, seeing all the comments, I think I might have to go ahead and blow some cash on this.

Well the strangest thing thus far for me about this game is that the Instruction Manuel is in 3 different languages, as is everything on the box itself. It made reading the instructions confusing at first because I turned to the back and it was written in Spanish, then the middle was french and the Beginning was english.
The only thing I find lacking about this game is that they didn't upgrade the multiplayer from Metroid prime 2 and Hunters and pretty much did away with it.
Allhough I'm glad they finally made Samus' ship playable

It made reading the instructions confusing at first because I turned to the back and it was written in Spanish, then the middle was french and the Beginning was english. They did it to the instruction manual too? I know they've done a few multi-language cases before (e.g., Super Paper Mario), but I don't recall the manual being done that way. Personally, I find those cases to be annoying. I can somewhat understand Spanish (though unless the game has Spanish text as well, it's false advertising in my opinion). Honestly though, how many people speak French, not English, and play English video games in North America? I know there are a few French areas in Canada, but is it that common to lack basic English that Nintendo fears not including French on the case will hurt sales?
Hades

Yeah, it is very annoying because the instruction is just talking about the controls. There is next to nothing about the story, the available upgrades (which every manual has done before), the enemies, NOTHING.

So more or less this completes the metroid series (until another game is announced) and I've pretty much played thru the entire series(including Zero Mission, Pinball and I downloaded Super Metroid since it was cheaper than buying an SNES) overall I still have mixxed feelings on the series because alot of the earlier titles did have rough edges as far as accomplishments went, but this one seems to be the best of the Bunch and I hope the series further progresses.

I had the chance to check this game out over at a friend's house the other day. It definitely lives up to all the hype. The controls: fantastic. The visuals: stunning. The music: unforgettable. The usage of the Wiimote really lets you feel like you are Samus at times.
Since I suck at the Wii controls, all I did was watch my friend play it through. I have to say, this game really feels more like you're watching a summer action sci-fi movie when you watch someone else play it. The scenes where Samus has to race to the tower to stop a meteor impact was intense enough but like everyone else here, the battle with Meta Ridley (doesn't this guy ever die?) was absolutely incredible. I don't think I can recall any other game that had my heart pounding this intensely.
Voice acting was good too although Samus still doesn't talk. :(
All in all, a great game and a must for everyone's collection. :)

Look at it this way. You have a chance of making it to first base by going out with a girl you're interested in. With Samus Aran, you have no chance because:
A. She's a CG game model.
B. The only thing she loves is her job.
C. A Wii only costs you a couple hundred bucks and can last you for a decade or two. With a girl, you may have a chance at a relationship for life.

Since I'm at the risk of having two completely off-topic posts on this page, I'll close by adding that this game is the first that has truly got me tempted to step up my search for a Wii in the stores. Some advice for anyone close to finishing the game:
After you finish the final boss, you'll be given the option to save or not. If you allow it to save, your save file will be restarted; you'll maintain all of your Tokens, Credits and unlocked material, but for the game itself, you can only start over from the beginning on Normal, Veteran or Hypermode difficulty. So if you want to be able to at least replay the final world after finishing, either copy your save file or choose not to save at the end or whatever. Just a heads up.
Also, the final 2 boss battles (Dark Samus and Aurora Unit 313) = http://70.87.75.238/forums/images/smilies/icon14.gif

i'm kind of thinking veteran is the same as the difficulties as the previous games. as i've discussed with bird boy last night, i've only died a couple times so far and i'm pretty far into the game. same with bb. the only times i died were because of my own stupidity, too
first time i died was when my suit became too corrupted. second time i was about to attack a couple of space pirates with only 175 energy units. i popped an energy tank and wasted the one and then the second one killed me because i only had 75 energy after that

Pirate Homeworld > Research Facility > Metroid Processing. You'll activate a lift via an X-Ray switch (the type with the concentric circles that you have to line up properly). At the bottom of the lift, you'll find the Energy Cell to the left. This is actual Energy Cell No. 4 in your logbook, so I'm assuming it's the one you're asking for.

nope. it wasn't. thanks, though, bcvm22. the inventory screen actually lists them out. the one i was looking for was located in bryyo in the hidden courtyard. once i figured it out, i smacked my forehead. onto the final battle!
EDIT: beat it! the final battle was surprisingly easy. well, maybe not "surprisingly" since normal mode is essentially "easy mode". i was hoping the final boss would be metroid prime again, but no such luck. i thought it would have finished off the series nicely. the ending is a bit disappointing, too. samus flies back through the wormhole wearing her varia suit. what happened to the PED suit with the enviroment protection? did it get blown off in the final battle?
the 75% completion ending was a nice tribute to the other fallen hunters in the gamei plan on going back and getting 100%. right now i'm at 92%

Wait, you have to find all of the energy cells? Crap, that is going to take forever since I'm missing 3.

You don't need to find all 9.
They're eventually used to power the GFS Valhalla when you find it adrift and heavily damaged in space. The minimum for completing the Valhalla to the extent necessary to progress in the game is 5 Energy Cells, so if you don't have all 9, be judicious in where you put Energy Cells in the ship, since not everything requiring an Energy Cell on the Valhalla is needed for progression. You'll also find a Cell (which would be the final one if you already have 8) immediately upon entering the Valhalla.

just curious as to what difficulty level you're playing on? i didn't find mogenar too bad. just annoying
blow up the red balls in his body. i think only need to do one, but i did all of them to be safe. go hyper. blast the new opening when it opens. once he starts charging, bomb his feet. go hyper. blast away at the openings again
something i liked about the end boss...
is when you nail dark samus with a hyper missle and it goes "ugh..." lol

Dude, Mogenar is the hardest boss in the entire game. He is the only one that has any strategy to beating him, for the other 3 main bosses are a joke. Yes, the final boss is probably the second easiest boss in the world.
Anyway, where was this Metroid Dread info people kept talking about, I never saw it?

It was a small bit of scan text on the Pirate Homeworld. It wasn't really info, just a brief bit. Here's a screenshot. (http://media.ds.ign.com/media/833/833052/img_4833559.html)

Once you gain access to the Gunship Missile Expansion control terminal in the Federation Landing Site, use it to raise the central platform. Take the lift to the upper level and upon exiting the lift, turn right to spot a pair of air ducts. Enter the nearest one and you'll emerge in a control room containing the Energy Cell. Remove it, exit the room and continue on with your efforts.

BTW, I beat the game with 100% in 15 hours. As I recall, I had Echoes at 18 hours and only 67%.

energy cell 4...
is located in bryyo. go to the room where you defeated the aero space troopers who kept reversing all the switches that you pulled in order to stop the cannon from firing. i don't remember the room exactly, but there is a large battery in there. using your ship's grapple beam, pick up the battery. no head to the hidden court yard where the giant stone robot was located. using your ship visor, look to the upper floors and you'll see a drop spot. drop the battery there which will activate the pump station. after that, the rest should be self explanatory

I'm on normal level. I can destroy two of the orb sockets but I'm so low on health afterwards and he's going beserk jumping around and I can't get a clear shot. Also is does'nt help when he makes rocks fall and you can't dodge both them and his shock waves when he jumps.
*EDIT*
I toally give up. I tried one more time and died 6 more times. Guess I just totally suck at this game.

just beat it at 100%. 16 hours
i'm kind of disappointed that retro is moving on to other games. i'm happy, but disappointed. the 100% ending left the game open. it shows samus flying off into space after visiting the chozo temple from prime 1. after she zips into the blackness of space, a green clone of her ship (with some modifications) shows up and chases after herwhat game comes after prime 3?

- She was sitting on the docking bay at Skytown in the ending, not Tallon IV.
- The ship apparently closely resembles the one belonging to Sylux, one of the rival bounty hunters from Metroid Prime: Hunters; I don't know what significance Retro intended that to have. I didn't particularly think it resembled Samus' gunship, but that's an unrelated semantic argument.
- The games bearing the Prime title (the GameCube/Wii trilogy + Pinball and Hunters) supposedly take place between Metroid and Metroid II. The latest game chronologically is Metroid Fusion.

I finished the game last night. I was glad to see that when you save and start over, that all the scans you've picked up on the first attempt cross over into the second attempt. I'm trying again now on the veteran difficulty level and have advanced a bit, but then I learned that I still missed some scans. Scans that I'll have to pick up after I finish the game a SECOND time now. *sigh*

I dunno if you were doing that for the purposes of getting the 100% ending, but your completion percentage is based solely on your Missile Expansions, Gunship Missile Expansions and Energy Tanks; the scans don't figure into it like they did in the last two games.

Well yeah I've seen that being said before. I was just thinking that maybe getting all the scans might make something else special happen.
By the way, when I was going to Phaaze, I copied that file to another slot, and I played that copy last night as well. That's the one where I got 75% of the items, and I even finished it to see the second best ending.
I wonder if finishing the game on the highest difficulty level does something special too, like in the first two Prime games.

A full Logbook and/or a Hypermode finish yield no additional bonuses to the best of my knowledge.

The scans never counted towards your percentage before either. I got 100% in the first game and only scanned a little bit of the items.

That always annoyed me. Why include a total number of scans to attain (i.e. 4/12, etc) if they don't count for anything except backstory?
Anyways, finished the game at 96%, have a few thoughts.
Got to give Retro a hand, they crafted a really-well made game. The production values are quite high, and they make me wish more Wii games had as much effort put in, rather than the quick waggle cash-ins that we've seen so far.
I loved the stage designs. Bryyo had an amazing skyline, what with the weird mini-planets chained to the surface and the ruins of the ancient civilization about. Norion was a bit more sterile than I liked, but it did host one of the coolest boss fights in the game (more on that later.)
My absolute favorite, however, was definitely Skytown. Hokey name aside, it was a total steampunk dream environment. The atmosphere of a self-sustained mechanical world with tons of little robots maintaining it was just sweet. In addition, the grapple ziplines were a terrific way to get around. I can't believe they didn't think of those for previous titles.
Pirate Homeworld was appropriately creepy, though I had a few quibbles about even getting there. I really don't think it should have been that easy for Samus to just go to the planet and land without so much as any kind of resistance from surface guns. GFS Valhalla was cool, and it had a definite "Aliens" vibe with the wrecked spaceship.
The creature design was top-notch. While the Galactic troopers looked a bit too much like Halo extras, the aliens and bounty hunters were amazing. The bosses were pretty fun, although it took me a couple of tries to get Mogenar taken care of.
There are a few problems I had with the game though.
There were too few save rooms on the planets themselves. This usually wasn't an issue, except when the ship was carrying something with the grapple beam and couldn't land without taking it back. Small quibble, really.
The lock-on also wasn't always perfect. There'd be times I'd put the cursor on top of the enemy and try to lock on, but it would just freeze the visor in place instead of following the enemy. It didn't happen too often, but it occasionally got annoying during boss fights.
I liked that they incorporated Samus's ship into this game, but it could have been so much better. For instance, what was the point of the ship missile upgrades if they never actually make any difference? All they ever get used for is to rarely blast an obstacle out of the way. In addition, there are cockpit controls that don't get used at all, like the steel windshield, thrusters, or red alert mode. This game would have been much better if we had just a few times where we got to fly the ship around and blast stuff. An example is the Pirate Homeworld. Rather than just clicking the icon and automatically flying there, the game could have taken you to the atmosphere to get around the anti-air resistance they would undoubtedly have.
Overall, it was satisfying. However, I do hope the next Metroid game will have a greater focus on actually doing some bounty hunting, which is supposed to be Samus's profession anyways.

The scans added to the storyline, as you said, but they also opened up galleries of concept art if you acquired enough of them. Of course, that would only be exciting to people that enjoy looking at concept art, but hey, I enjoyed looking at them all a couple times.
