We have the animated Lord of the Rings, but I liked the live-action WAY better.

The live one stuck closer to the book than the animated ones. The animated ones were good, but there were so much left out that I didn't like...but then again, it's animation and I wouldn't want to see a 2-hour animation (unless the animation is incredible). Live one all the way! :)

Live-action. Although, I think there's room for a decent animated one.... I'd go for an OADVD that takes advantage of the format so you can see the parts that were better for chapter books but not movies.
