View Full Version : Do you prefer to get your hair cut from the opposite sex?

It might be a weird question, and it's something I haven't really thought about before until today, but do you guys (and gals) prefer to get your hair cuts from the opposite sex or does it not matter for you? Me personally I don't care because I used to go to an old barbershop until I was thirteen and then after that I ended up going to different salons and 95% now days it ends up being a woman cutting my hair.
The question and curiousity of this thread mainly comes from my one friend that I met today as we both went to same place for our haircuts. When it came to his turn and a guy had called him over, he shyly said he wasn't in a hurry and then offered to give his turn to a mother with two kids. I didn't say anything but I found it odd because it never occured to me that guy cutting another guy's hair could be considered weird.
So what's your opinion?

Well to me it doesn't really matter. As long as they cut my hair well, I could care less if they are male or female.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had my hair cut by a guy. I probably wouldn't find it too bothersome if it happened, though.

I kinda prefer women alot, because usually guys who do it are quite "feminine" , and that just doesnt sit so well with me.
Plus, if the girl is your age (for guys this catagory is for you), your able to strike up a conversation with your stylist and prehaps get a number or go get some coffee when she gets off work, you never know.
And tip well, because people who need tips is saying "im in need of desperate cash and ive done an adaquite job on your hair"...

How? I never said that women were better at giving haircuts than men, or the other way around. All I asked was which one you feel more comfortable with, whether you're a guy or a girl. I'm sorry if my question offended anyone, I didn't think it was a big deal to ask, but whatever

What? Not every guy who cuts hair is "feminine," infact most guys that I know who cut/style hair are the exact opposite, that is just rude of you to stereotype.
Interesting poll, I really never thought about it before. Frankly, the gender doesn't matter so much to me as the personality and talent.

It doesn't bother me at all if a man or woman cuts my hair, because the only thing I care about is if the person is experienced enough. I've walked away with bad haircuts before due to inexperienced barbers.

My dad used to cut hair, and he's anything but "feminine". Way to stereotype pal.
Me personally? I could care less.

It only ends up being bad for about a week, before it grows to the way I like it. Yeah, I have fast growing hair.

I remember that back when I was very little I always got my haircut at this one place with a guy. Now I don't care.

My opinion is that this thread is extremely sexist, but I'll let it go for now.I really need to get you a definition of "sexist" don't I? There is no doubt there is a difference. If you see a hint of Misogyny or Misandry, shut it down.
But really, i prefer girl hair cutters simply because I'm more comfortable with girls. My "maybe I should grow a ponytail" humour, just wouldn't work with guys. I've also been used to getting better cuts from girls. I'm also of the belief that when I need to interact with someone for a variety of reasons, I get better service from women. And I have a long list of things I couldn't get done while dealing with men that cleared right up after having a woman across the desk. I'll go out of my way to deal with women instead of men because it works for me.
Yeah, it MIGHT be sexist if you recognize there's actually a DIFFERENCE between men and women...

Exactly. Besides, if a person is secure with their sexuality, then they can perform actions without worrying about the sterotype that comes with said action.
As far as the topic, I'll admit it is a pleasant feeling if a women is doing the haircut, but I do not wince at man doing the haircut.

Funny enough, I prefer to have a woman cut my hair. Rather, I prefer a woman to shampoo my hair. Those shampoos feel so good, and I always have to force myself not to crack a smile when a guy does it.

I don't think I've ever had my hair cut by a guy, so... I couldn't tell you whether I prefer a guy or gal barber.
Gender isn't that important, though; what matters is how your hair looks when they're finished. :)

All else being equal, I guess I prefer a woman. But then, all else being equal, I prefer a woman for most things, because they're purty. Maybe that makes me a little sexist, but hey, who isn't? (-: And besides, how often is "all else" really truly 100% equal anyway?

It doesn't really matter to me. Women are more likely to complain about how hard and wiry my hair is to cut, while guys lack the sexual appeal for me. It just comes down to who I trust.
Most of the time, I cut my own hair or let a family member do it. It's a real chore worrying about my hair.

Nothing is more of a turn on than a woman cutting my hair. Watching my locks fall to the floor...and her trampling all over them. Ooh, goosebumps!
Seriously, I don't care who cuts my hair as long they don't try to do annoying chit-chat. Just cut the hair.
I don't have a preference as to who cuts my hair. I've been going to a female hairdresser for the last couple of years, but that's because I like the job she does with my hair, not because she's a woman.

I'm with you on that. Normally I don't mind small talk with strangers who I'm ostensibly there to do business with, but when I have my hair cut I need to expend all my concentration on dealing with the fact that there are sharp implements very very near my eyes, ears, and other sensitive organs that I'd like to keep intact. It makes me paranoid, which is not conducive to good conversation. I guess it's a personal quirk.

Exactly, quality above everything, regardless of sex.
For me at least Men usually do a better job, it seems there is a higher chance of getting someone who cares enough to do a good job..
Though I haven't had a haircut in 5-6 years, just trimmed by my girlfriend every once in a while..

What I've found in my experience is that when women cut my hair, they tend to cut it so that it looks more like theirs than I wanted it to. I had a woman shear off three inches more than I wanted...because "it worked for me when I did it." Granted, I got the girly face shape to pull it off, but yeah, did not like the angles on that cut. I'm not 45 and losing my hair like you, lady >_<;; She also tried to dye me because the color would be "cute." No way.
I currently get my hair cut by a man named Pat from Manchester, England. I've found that a lot of guys have a thing for longer hair, so subconsciously he lets it go a little longer than any female hairdresser I've had. He talks as much as I want; he lets me initiate the conversation rather than be chatty as he goes.
There's also a bit of a cultural difference between hairdressers in US and UK. US -- they want to try things on you; it's a good thing and a bad thing. They also talk to you a lot to make it less boring. UK -- they give you what you want; you're paying them for a service, and the customer is always right (even if they do like Dark Helmet).
So yeah. My hair is currently cut by a guy. I like him because he's not a pain in the arse, unlike my previous barbers (who just happened to be women).
EDIT: As a sidebar, I thought I'd throw in there that Pat is married with a few adult children.

As long as they remember to brush/ blow-dry off any little hairs left over on me from the cutting, then it doesn't matter who it is, as long as they can provide quality and attention to detail.
Otherwise, I stiff the tip somewhat, with only the most sinister of sexist intentions of course. =P

I can't remember if I've ever gotten my hair cut by a man, but the distinction has never crossed my mind. Women just happen to work at the place where I go to get my hair cut. As long as the person cutting my hair does a good job, why does it matter?

I've been getting haircuts since I was in pre-school. Almost all of them have been done by women. Only twice I got my hair cut by a man ( I remember because they are rare and uncommon occurances). Its just the way its been for me. I guess I prefer women to cut my hair (I'm a heterosexual guy, so yeah), but I don't really care what the gender of the cutter is so long as they do a good job.

Me and my mom have been going to the same place for about 10 years now. Anybody there is good enough for us since we know them all pretty well. As long as you cut it well I don't mind at all. Why should I mind what gender cuts my hair?
Brian does the best job at fixing up the horrible mop on my head, and I think I've had a good mix between him and some of the other women there cutting my hair.

I like to make conversation while I get my hair cut (it feels kind of awkward just sitting there in stony silence, after all), and I generally find it easier to talk to women, so I usually prefer to have a female barber. Fortunately, there's a barber shop within driving distance of my house that's staffed entirely by women, so it's where I usually go.

I couldn't agree more. I find it more nerve-racking when the barber doesn't attempt to strike up a conversation. Personal experience has shown me time and again that the quiet ones usually do the worse jobs or leave me with cuts.
Back to the topic at hand, I've never had a guy cut my hair so I can't give out a good answer, though as long as he doesn't shove a pair of scissors in my eye I wouldn't really mind. Every place I’ve been to has had only women workers, which again, I don’t mind.

I've had my hair cut by both men and women over the years. When I was little I used to go to a barber shop, and it was always men working there. Then in the mid-90s I started going to a salon, and it was almost always women working there. For a few years I used to see the same woman, then she quit and I started seeing the same guy there. Both were great and always cut it exactly like I wanted. When the guy quit and went to another place, I followed and started going there so I could keep him, but not long after we moved away. I got along great with both of them. The guy was a "stereotypical feminine guy," but it never bothered me. He was really nice, and sometimes when he'd cut my hair Game Show Network would be on the TV and we'd try to answer the questions before the contestants.
Since then, I've had my hair cut almost exclusively by women since more of them tend to work in the salons around here than men, though I've rarely had it cut by the same one twice. Our neighbor opened her own salon downtown about two years ago, so I've gone to her the last few times since there's already a familiarity there. I don't mind either gender cutting my hair, but I usually choose the women just because I'd rather sit there and talk with a pretty girl than a guy. :)

-Aximlli-
My opinion is that your friend really needs to deal with his sexual identity issues.
My main concern is that whomever cuts my hair does a good job. I'm not concerned about the sex of my doctor or dentist (they are both women, and I'm male, BTW), so why would I care about my hairdresser?

That doesn't mean you have the right to categorize male barbers as gay.
Well, I guess you technically do have that right Constitutionally, but as you can see, many people find it extremely rude.

Depends what the male barber does. If he specializes in short hair and is an older guy, there's a good chance he's straight. But male 'stylists' who are in their 20s are oftentimes gay.
Now I'm not trying to be... um... sexual-preference-ist... or whatever... I'm just saying, it's oftentimes the case.

I posted it in reply to your earlier comment that race matters when going to a barber. The statement was so bizarre that I had to toss that in there. Because the headline coupled with that picture is classic. But if I have to explain a joke then I guess it failed.
