It also airs on August 19 at the same time. In fact, August 19 is the "Sing-A-Long" version of the movie. I personally didn't find it to be as enjoyable as the first one. The music isn't quite as attractive as the first one. I do love how they have Troy and Ryan grow in this one though. I'm glad to see Ryan finally got some development that he deserved in the first movie. I also enjoyed the bloopers they showed during the closing credits.
As a little FYI, the film is filmed in Salt Lake City for the High School scenes, and the rest is filmed in St. George, Utah, despite them wanting you to think it's Albquerque.

thanks for that location fact bigddan, i missed the first run, and i'll try to tune in to the re-broadcast tonight, i've got nothing to do tonight due to the "Hundo", so that means, open timeslot in my schedule, so, i'm going to tune in this time tonight...
My fav song on the film was Zac's single "Bet on it", its such a good song... "What time is it" is also catchy too...

I really enjoyed this movie. Though I admit, I had my doubts.
I simply love the on screen chemistry between Zac and Vanessa. Those two are just so adorable together. I squee everytime they do something cutesy together XD
It was awesome to see Ryan get some more screen time and character development. Hes my favorite character and to see him get more love in this movie was all too good. I loved how at the end he won the award for the talent show, not Troy or Gabriella or any of the other Wild Cats as I was half expecting.
The songs in HSM2 werent nearly as catchy as the ones from the first one. I love "What Time is It" though.
The bloopers were pretty funny too. Loved the last one with Zac pushing the golf cart.

I totally understand why they want him in Footloose. That whole 'Bet on It' routine looked like it was taken directly from the movie. He definitely knows how to "cut loose" for lack of a better term.

I still liked the original better, the songs and choreagraphy was a lot better in the first High School Musical, then in the second High School Musical.

My daughter who is 9 loved it and thought it was better than the original. She has been anticipating this movie for months. Side note..Ashley Tisdale is from my town. She came back to do a show at the JCC last year as a favor for her aunt who still lives here.

Well,if DC is smart they won't ring the juice out of this movie like they did HSM 1.Right...like that's gonna happen. This movie is going to have so many cheezy spin-offs and merchandise that the original movie will shrivel in comparison.Too bad, these movies were really good. But DC isn't just "in it to win it" they're "in it for the money" and a lot of money they are making.

Considering everytime HSM 1 is shown, the ratings ARE STILL VERY HIGH, it's no doubt HSM 2 will be rerun to Hell and back.
Nickelodeon, you have been de-throned by the Disney Channel as the number one kids network.

When I first watched HSM1, I'll admit that I didn't really care for it. Now, over a year later, I find myself rewatching it and really studying it, along with watching the premiere of HSM2. Now I really see why this is a phenomenon. This is probably one of the only live-action programs from Disney that truly makes it the great entertainment company it is.
There is a quote that I heard somewhere - "the second is always better than the first." This quote, IMO, rang true for HSM2. Funky songs and choreography, the romantic Zanessa duets, and the fact that these two movies actually preach the gospel of everyday life made this movie a classic.
My favorite songs, in no particular order, are "What Time Is It," "You Are The Music In Me (both versions)," "Everyday," and "All For One."
My favorite scene was the Troy/Gabriella scene for "Gotta Go My Own Way," and for three significant reasons: The bridge. The river. The reflected moonlight. You can't get any better than that!
My other favorite scene was toward the end, the kiss between Troy/Gabriella. Especially the part where both were held in each other's arms when those sprinklers were on, right before the "All For One" performance...no wonder this is compared to Grease!
The only scene I kind of didn't like was the Troy/Gabriella pool scene - just a little too steamy for a family-oriented movie. But that's just me.
So, similar to all I've just mentioned, I predict that HSM2 (and 1) are movies that will probably be studied in film schools for years, since both are so good.
Outside of this, one thing I didn't like is the date it aired on. I mean, here is a movie about high-schoolers enjoying the start of summer vacation, and it airs RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF AUGUST???!!! Half of all American schools have already started their new year by this time!
Overall, a highly successful sequel to a highly successful smash. My rating: 9/10!

I wasn't able to watch the entire thing and I only got to watch the Baseball game dancing part. I didn't like the song and the lipsyncing made it seemed lame, but it seems kinda unfair to judge the movie if I haven't even seen the entire thing. I liked the first one even though Disney overexposed the hell out of it, so I might give this one a shot whenever I get the chance to sit down for a rerun.

I'm not surprised this movie got such great ratings. They've been advertising it nonstop for what...three months?
Ya see with rating numbers like that, is why Cartoon Network is airing live-action stuff. They just can't compete anymore!
I'll watch the whole movie tomorrow.

Just tuned in to the re-broadcast on saturday (Day 2 of premiere weekend with their Q&A segment), and i gotta say, that was the best film experience i got since Fantastic 4 - Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Its great to know that Kenny Ortega (The Director who did Cheetah Girls 2) is handling the chair (Director's chair) for this film, im also suprised to see Miley on the "All for one" video (thanks to the fans who voted on the "Play your part" poll!), but my favorite part had to be the Blooper reel, it was funny.
And the Video for "Bet on it" was almost seemed to be like an acutal Music Video that had nothing to do with HSM2 (although it did had something to do with the movie because of that "Staff are supposed to work during the talent show, no exceptions" note.), Did anyone notice that?
Anyways, it was a great ride, Now im waiting for the remainder of the Hannah episodes and HSM3 and we're all set!
"Disney's High School Musical 2" - 5/5 for outstanding screenplay, directing, songs, and choreogrophy.

Ratings are in....
HSM2 - 17.2 million viewers (NEW CABLE RECORD)
Phineas & Ferb - 10.8 million viewers
Hannah Montana - 10.7 million viewers
Full article:
From Yahoo! TV news:
Los Angeles (E! Online) - Friday's New York Times advised readers to skip the TV premiere of High School Musical 2 and wait for the soundtrack. But you know how impatient eight-year-olds can be...
Disney Channel's HSM2 was simply huge, averaging 17.2 million Zac Efron-worshipping viewers, preliminary Nielsen Media Research ratings showed, per the network Saturday.
The TV movie set records for all-time biggest basic cable audience (besting a 2006 ESPN Monday Night Football telecast) and all-time biggest made-for-basic-cable telepic (besting TNT's 2001 western, Crossfire Trail), the Disney Channel said.
Overall, HSM was easily TV's most watched show, on broadcast or cable, since the final week of 2006-07 season, topping the summertime likes of The Sopranos finale on HBO (11.9 million) and the season premiere of NBC's America's Got Talent (12.9 million). And according to the Disney Channel, it was the most-watched TV-movie anywhere since the 2005 premiere of the Keri Russell-Skeet Ulrich period drama, The Magic of Ordinary Days (18.7 million), on CBS.
On broadcast networks, TV-movie audiences skew old. On the Disney Channel, the viewers skew young—and, especially in the case of HSM2, big.
The sequel drew more children, aged 6-11, than any TV telecast in modern Nielsen history (since 1991), the Disney Channel said.
Predictably, HSM2 also did well among the high-school-aspiring set, aged 9-14, attracting more tween viewers than any TV show ever, save 2004's Super Bowl.
It was not clear what impact the mobilization of such large numbers of children had on the greater society on Friday night. Historically, or at least anecdotally, big TV events, such as the Beatles' debut on Ed Sullivan, have been linked to drops in crime. There was no word if HSM2 could be credited with bringing calm to the nation's pizza parlors and summer camps.
Also, according to the Disney Channel, there was no way of gauging exactly how many youngsters watched HSM2 owing to an untold number of HSM2 viewing parties. (Nielsen doesn't count heads at such events. Ditto for slumber parties.)
Airing after HSM2, a 15-minute preview of the upcoming animated series Phineas & Ferb (10.8 million) and an all-new Hannah Montana (10.7 million) likewise scored big. In fact, per the Disney Channel, Friday's Hannah Montana now ranks as basic cable's most watched series episode ever.
For the uninitiated, HSM2 is the followup to High School Musical, the 2006 TV movie phenomenon that spawned last year's top-selling album, a concert tour, an ice show and a book line, among other tie-in products.
The original movie remains one of cable's biggest draws, despite airing more than 20 times since its premiere averaged a then Disney Channel record 7.8 million viewers in January 2006.
The new movie starred Hairspray's Efron and duet partner Vanessa Hudgens, both of the old movie, in a tale seemingly borrowed from the third season of Saved by the Bell, i.e., high-school friends take summer jobs, en masse, at a country club.
In its review, the New York Times said there was "much to admire" in the sequel, but also "so much to hate," including, for its taste, too much cast use of bronzer.
The Los Angeles Times was, however, charmed. "To answer your question," its review said Friday, "it's even better than the first one."
Maybe eight-year-olds only get the L.A. papers.

I'm glad that HSM2 has done so well this weekend. Since HSM3 is supposedly going to heatres instead of Disney Channel, then I wouldn't be surprised to see HSM3 becoem one of the highest rated films ever.
I looked in the TV Guide Magazine on Aug. 13- 19, and Miley Cyrus, Zac Efron, and Dylan & Cole Sprouse are listed on the top 5 list. As for the other 2, Nickelodeon had Emma Roberts listed, and NBC's Hayden Panettiere rounded out the list of five. That means that Disney Channel is slowly catching up to Nick not only in terms of ratings, but in terms of popularity as well.

Here is my essement of High School Musical 2, and the HSM franchise.
It is not as good the hype, publicity, and the record setting accomplishments it is getting, but for what it is, a nice cute little musical movie series, it is good.
I thought the sequel was much better than the first one, the ending was not rushed like the first movie. Only disappointment is Chad and Taylor didn't get their own storyline, that is seperate from the main story, and just focuses on them.
I liked that Ryan broke out of his shell, and became more indepedent, instead of being his sister's lackey.
Troy solo song on the golf course was awsome. And finally Troy and Gabriella kiss. It is about time, and speaking of Gabriella, I am glad she finally fought back against Sharpay at the end, instead of being the naieve fool she was in the first movie.
As for Sharpay, she was excellent in this movie. She was at times psychotic in a funny way, and downright evil at times. But also was not a one dimential character, Ashley Tisdale did an unbeliveable job of making her as evil as possible, but still showed enough human qualities through out the movie, and kept her enough in the gray area, that her redemption at the end was believeable, and make me not want to see her completely fall.
Sharpay is defentely the hardest character to play, because it is a balencing act of being a character you don't like, but not hate at the same time. It is much easier to play a good guy or hero character, or a one dimential bad guy or villain, than to play a gray character like Sharpay.

The thing about greenlighting both HSM 2 and 3 at once, was that I don't think they foresaw Zac Efron getting to be as popular as he is between the HSM franchise and his feature film projects, including Hairspray and the upcoming remake of Footloose.
Meaning Disney's going to have to pay through the nose to get Efron to commit to part 3.

About High School Musical 3, when I first heard about it and HSM 2 they said there was a sequal and a Halloween themed Haunted HSM coming this year; but now they are saying that the third HSM is going to be in theatres!?!
Does anyone know when HSM2 is coming out on DVD?
And why is Ashley Tisdale not getting any of the love and attention, I love her on Suite Life she's got great comedic chops and her timing with Brenda Song makes the show. She makes the movie, like Zoombie said it's harder to a character like Sharpay than it is to play one like Gabriella or Troy.

You probably could sing better than Zach...because he doesn't sing in the movie. That's why he wasn't in the Stage show apart from Footloose/Hairspray
And jeez, the anger on here is ridiculous. You don'y HAVE to pay attention to these things, yet it's like 'OMG WORZT THING EVAAAR!'

Zac Efron also said he did sing in the first one, but his voice was mixed with Drew Seeley, who was originally supposed to have the role of Troy Bolton, until scheduling conflicts occurred, which is why they used Drew Seely for High School Musical: The Concert. Efron was originally supposed to play Chad. Efron's voice isn't mixed with Seeley's though in HSM2. As Top Cat mentioned, he came out a week before the movie aired and announced he was singing all his parts solo in the movie, which is one of the reasons I could notice some difference when it came to Troy's songs.

Saw one of the replays. It was certainly no Newsies, but, hey, what is?
The baseball game and the two solo songs (Troy's and his girlfriend's) were definately the highpoints. But mainly the baseball game. It was neat to see Ryan try to step up. Because A) he never came across as exceptionally villainish in the first musical, and B) I love seeing arrogant characters prove that they're good as they think they are. ...Or almost as good, as the case may be. The ending though....looked like it was going to be horribly cliched and sappy, so I kinda lost interest.
