Someone posted a link to this Heroic Toons site the other day, and on the Batman Beyond (http://heroictoons.topcities.com/batman_beyond.html) section I came across this picture of Bruce Wayne:

Pretty gruesome. Looks like the final version, except he's bald and the scar on his face is more serious. Also, he's not dressed as nice and looks a bit more hunched over. I can only assume this is an early character design and I'm glad they cleaned it up. I think in the end they came up with the perfect balance of young Wayne and the damaged soldier you see pictured above.

Edit by Jim Harvey: The picture link didn't seem to work,so I put up the same pick from the WF site.

The only major difference is the hair- and I'm glad they went the way they went. I just don't see Bruce as being totally bald like that.

Looks like he's blinded in one eye, too.

Maybe Lex Luthor paid the animators to do that. He was upset that he didn't take over Wayne Enterprises (and Derek Powers did), so he had to get in somehow. You never know. Lex has his hand in EVERYTHING...

Ahh, he is too ugly, to be Mr. Wayne.

He almost looks villianous, maybe that's why they changed him. Anyway, he looks about 10-15 years older than what he was in BB.

I too much prefer the design used than this. I'm glad that the designers remembered that, although Batman is a very dark character, Bruce Wayne was supposedly very attractive, and probably wouldn't age that badly.

I honestly like this version of Bruce better...

He's far scarier and more hunchback like. It's hard to believe that this used to be the Batman. I personally like this touch to him.

Although I do prefer the current BB Bruce design, I could see how this design could work. Alfred is gone, no more Tim, Barbra or Dick to accompany him. He's completely alone(excluding Ace) and he's probably dug himself an even deeper, darker hole than he first did when his parents died, since he's ashamed of that one fateful night we saw in Rebirth 1 and his, again, loneliness. Plus years and years, and years of fighting could really change you, physically and mentally. I can see him losing his hair...after all, how many shots to the head can he take? Same goes for his back.

The original image looks absolutely devoid of all hope. It looks like Bruce died inside and his outside's trying to catch up. I guess it is grim, but I like the design they chose for the show better.

Wing Zero, all of your comments made complete Batman Beyond sense, and they also address why I couldn't stand seeing Bruce this way...

For his quest to end like this...it drains me of hope...to know that one man who sacrificed everything...including life itself...in order to battle man's wrongdoings....would eventually become what he'd fought for so long...by taking that gun in "Rebirth"....truely hurts me. I'd rather think that Bruce died early than to see him become that ....

Artistically, though, it looks really great...

What's up with his eyes? Are they closed or are they just messed up looking. The one eye doesn't look like the other.

I think that one is supposed to be scarred, and that's why it looks weird.

That's an awesome design. I always saw the old Bruce as much more of Batman than Bruce Wayne, and that the only reason he went back to Wayne Enterprises was because of Terry (the information and attitude he brought to Batman). So this design makes sense. And it'd sure scare the crap outta anyone who tried tresspassing.

Still, I'm glad they went with the official design.
