In another thead, some people thought I took some unnecessary shots at cartoon mascots, and particular dogs. To show that I am not an anti dog person, I created a thread for us to list and discuess the greatest animated dogs.
Note: Dog characters that essential human in their world such as Goofy or Underdog is not on my list. I am looking for pure animated dogs, that are looked at as dogs in their animated universe.
Here is my top 9 list, (9 in K-9)
1) Scooby Doo (Scooby Doo Where Are You, and other spinoffs) - the gold standard of animated dogs in my opinion. From his knack of ending each episode with a scene stealing gag, to his wacking disguices, and his big habbitite, Scooby Doo was not the bravest dog in the world, he is one of the cowardest dog in the world, but when his friends were in danger especially goatie wearing friend named Shaggy, Scooby could be as brave and herotic as Lassie. And he is hillarous.
2) Brian (Family Guy) - for me, this is my 1 A or 1 B, that is how much I love this character. The smartest memeber of the Griffen family, and probably the most normal one. Like Scooby (and his family apperantely), for some unexplaiend reason, Brian is the only dog that can talk in his animated world, and no one seems to question that. He is the only aware of Stewie evil ambition, and he is able to keep him in check, and because of this Brian is the world's savior, but no one seem to know. He has drinking problems and drug addictions, showing even thought he is a dog, he is human like the rest of us.
3) Dino (The Flintstones) - the Flintstones loyal pet dog or should I say dinosauer. In his debut Dino could talk, but for some reason hasn't talked since. He always has Fred's back, and turned down a chance to be a movie star to be with his family.
4) Snoppy (Peanuts) - Charlie Brown's dog and man's best friend, though he doesn't act like it at times. As Charlie Brown sarcasticly called him "Man's best friend" in A Charlie Brown Chrismas". Snoppy is a very intelligent dog, intelligent enough to know, it is not smart to fight. In my opinion he is like Brian, only he doesn't talk. Love's to drive Lucy and the other's crazy with is wacky antics.
5) Huckaberry Hound (Huckaberry Hound) - just because your a dog doesn't mean you couldn't be a southern gentlemen. Huckaberry Hound, a charming character, who despite being a dog could probably get a date with almost any pretty human girl with his charm.
6) Pluto (Mickey Mouse) - the iconic of Disney. Just like any dog, his loyal to his owner Mickey Mouse. But like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, he has had his share of problems with a couple of chipmunks.
7) Hong Kong Phooey (Hong Kong Phooey) - a cross between a wonder dog and Bruse Lee. Don't miss with this dog. Very one dimentenal character, but I don't care.
8) Astro (The Jetsons) - the more things change, the more they stay the same. In a future with flying cars, houses in the sky, and condos on the moon, dog is still man's best friend, and there is no better example than Astro.
9) Fu Dog (American Dragon: Jake Long) - he is one of newer characters on my list, and he probably may never reach classic status as the others, for what he is worth, he is hillarous. A dog that has lived centuries, he has seen it all. And he still hasn't aged a bit. His knowledge of magical potions at times is instruemental in the American Dragon's victory over his enemies. But it is one liners, and his disreguard of political correctness is that enderes him to me.

Howler from the Pound Puppies. Not only did he have that awesome bowler hat with the secret compartment and mechanical hand, and mad piano skillz, but Howler bore a slight resemblance to my favorite Marx Brother Harpo. And he was voiced by Broadway vet Robert Morse.

Interesting list, Zoombie. One minor nitpick, though: you said that you weren't counting any anthro dogs (i.e., dogs who are essentially humans in their worlds like Goofy an Underdog), yet you put Hong Kong Phooey and Huckleberry Hound on your list. Those guys aren't any more real dogs than Goofy is. Both of them are basically humans in dog suits.

Are you sure, than call me a hypocrit, my defense is the Huckleberry Hound / Yogi Bear universe is confusing, it is inconsident on weather they are like Goofy or like Pluto with the animals.

I would never call you a hypocrite; it's just that Huck and Hong Kong were never treated or acknowledged as animals on their respective shows. True, the Yogi Bear and Friends universe is tricky, because some of the animals were acknowledged 'lower life forms' placed in subservient to human environments (like Yogi who was clearly a mooching bear in a national park) or Wally Gator (who lived on exhibit in a zoo), while other characters like Huck were basically humans with animal appearances. I don't think Hong Kong or Huck were ever acknowledged as dogs by any other characters. I remember Huck was a dogcatcher in one short!

I just put certain characters in different categories, it is a judgement call. There is no rule you can't list characters like Underdog or Goofy, I choose not to, that is my proacitive. It depends if there humans in the world or not. It is ticky in the Disney world as well, Pluto is the lower life form in a world full of human animals, and the show Quack Pack is weird, beside Donald and his nephews, and Daisy, everyone else is human.
But I don't want to get off topic, just something I had to point out.

*shrugs* Hey, I'm not arguing the point. It's your list; you can fill it as you choose. That above detail just struck me as curious is all.

You should have seen this place before the rule. It was getting ridiculous.
of course, I *had* explanations for all my choices when I posted the list somewhere else, but I deleted them because I figured it was waaay too long.
Hey, I'd rather read a nice long explanation than ignore a list of names that means nothing to me because it lacks substance.

Heh...yeah, I can imagine that if everything is just a bunch of lists, it could become rather meaningless and dull.
*nods understandingly* Mmhm, I appreciate that. I've felt the same at times.
I myself tend to make lists a lot...and they usually get very long on me before I even realize it...and most of the time, I wind up feeling that my lists tell a great deal about me, even if I don't individually explain each item I chose to put in them. However, I do completely understand why that rule was implemented, and I wouldn't do the unexplained list thing here again.;)

Scooby Doo - Well what can I say...? I grew up watching it and loved it! Shaggy and Scooby were one of the very few that actually kept me entertained for hours. At least long enough so Mom wouldn't pull her hair out of her head. I was always happy to relate to the coward with my fears and love of food..
Cadpig (101) - A brilliant minded pooch! Her cute voice and her additionally great common sense allowed me to enjoy the character for who she was. Not only was she smart but she still managed to have fun... Which in shows I noticed was kinda rare.. I guess..
Courage the Cowardly Dog - Frightened by everything and yet he always manages to face his fears! ^.^ I like it that he's missing teeth, adds some character to him! :D
Krypto the Super Dog - I was refreshed when watching this show. It'd taken me back to the quality of 80's/90's cartoons. I completely fell in love with his voice and character design. I always enjoyed the concept behind Superman having a pet..
Charlie Barkins (All Dogs go to Heaven) - I've had this obsession with German Shepherds ever since I was young as well. Just something about them have always pulled me close. Now Charlie? I like him, a big risk taker, speaks out on what he wants to do and does it!
Dixie (The Fox and the Hound 2) - Pretty girl, Pretty Voice... good character development and personality. I rather enjoyed watching her.
Daisy (Rover Dangerfield) - Again another childhood favorite! I must've rented this movie over 50 times and every time I LOVED just watching Daisy. I think she's all I rented it for. She was definitely the coolest! (And no I'm not saying the story wasn't good. It was...=) I just loved looking at Daisy a lot too.)
Dodger (Oliver & Company) - Gotta love a Brooklyn accent. He's smart, does what he wants, he's loyal...and c'mon a dog in sun glasses that sings? Won me over!
Rita (Oliver & Company) - Pretty character, loved her attitude about things. She knew how to strut her stuff and kick butt.
Balto - I've always loved legends so getting to see one animated that was an animal, was needless to say excellent. Loved his design and voice.
Star (Balto) - Robbie Rist owns, and him voicing this character was just PERFECT! XD First thing that caught me about this character was his really cool voice, then there was his character design, and THEN the hilarious personality! XD I've always been taken by characters with his type of personality. He's probably one of my top favorites on this whole list.
Jenna (Balto) - All I can say is that, growing up and watching the film, she always reminded me of my Sheltie named Penny. (I know she's a husky) But how she always had the best in mind for her owner. Tried to make h er feel better and everything... It always reminded me of my dog. Even now she still does, she's a very beautiful character.
Roo (The Raccoons) - The cutest on my list and one I LOVED to watch late at night! XD I'd always beg to go to the rental store and rent The Raccoons VHS! Roo was always so cute and tiny. When I was little I think I always wanted a puppy like him. One that'd always followed me on adventures.... XD Shaggy Dogs were just the coolest.
Deputy Dawg - The HARDEST one on the list for me to remember. @_@; I wish I could... but all I know is that he was a fav when I was little.. and he's still a favorite now.
Goofy - I love Goofy for all the silly things he does!
Max - Actually one of THEE coolest dog characters I've ever seen animated. There was a time that I related to him SO well...and for that he's a favorite. I like characters that I can relate to..he was there when I needed it. Again.. dogs in sun glasses are awesome too.
Bobby (Goofy Movie 1-2) - He loves cheese, I love cheese,He's Crazy... I'M CRAZY... loved his look, and I think that's all I've gotta say, good night everybody! XD
Hector (Dragon Hunters) - Lazy, likes to steal food, gets pushed around, yet is always loyal to his friends. Not to mention he's funny, can talk and oh yeah.. He's a DRAGON who thinks he's a dog. XD It's the coolest idea yet.
Pal (Casper) - Again watched it when I was younger, thought the idea of a Ghost Dog would be neat. Enjoyed the character design and how he acted. :3 A Ghost dog, how cool would that be? It'd never die, It'd never have to wait to use the restroom, or to..be fed...really.. XD...

Callia, your reasons for liking several of those characters are much the same as mine--especially Rita and Dixie! I also like Daisy, Bobby, Star,...etc. XD
Aww, I see my Top 50 list actually was deleted. But no matter! I can copy/paste it with the explanations I've written in the past. ^.~ (They're basically lousy though, since I got too tired to really do each one justice, lol.) But what else did I say in that post..? Oh, yeah, I had described a *few* of the choices, I think...I said the most about Brainy Barker, and it was good, but oh well. That was because I wanted to address a couple of old-thread Krypto questions, like "who are your 5 favorite characters?" and
"who's your favorite Dog Star?" My answers being: Brainy, Hot Dog, Tail Terrier, Rosie, and Ace, followed by a few others I won't mention again, and Brainy! Tusky Husky had won the old poll by a landslide, and I like him as well. Gah, forget trying to retype everything else I said in that post...'tis gone. ;;
Here's my list again, basically the same, & properly this time:
Rita (Oliver & Company): She gave me my love of cartoon dogs, and I loved her at first sight because I adore dogs of her type. She's still my #1. Rita is such a fabulous female character. She's strong, smart, sassy, tough, yet very understanding, wise, compassionate, and so on. She manages to be so pretty andc lassydespite belonging to a gang of thieves who 'make an art out of staying alive' on the streets.
Sasha LaFleur (All Dogs go to Heaven 2): When I saw her I knew I'd love her. She's c lassy, seductive, intelligent, responsible, independent, caring, talented, and many otherfantastic things.
Dixie (The Fox and the Hound 2): The latest addition to the trio with the first two-the three have an obvious connection. Dixie's more of a temperamental, fiery, diva-ish country gal with a somewhat mean and sneaky side-but she too has a good heart underneath. Everything about her is pure awesome. Like Cash, too.
Brainy Barker (Krypto the Superdog): First impression-purple Sasha! Brainy is a beautiful purple alien dog with formidable psychic powers, and she's the driven, professional, no-nonsense female leader of the universe-traversing, justice-bringing Dog Star Patrol. Tell me what's not to absolutely love about her?
Bella (Millionaire Dogs): Obscure German film, but Bella was another love-at-first-sight; how do you not love a canine with Ariel the little mermaid's hair? What I really want to know is how her former boyfriend could have dumped her for a Bassett hound.
Cross (Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin): She reminds me a lot of Rita (and the others.) A beautiful Saluki, she is the only female to be accepted as a fighter within her pack-and a great fighter she is too. Simply put, Cross kicks tail. She is very tough and nobody pushes her around, yet she has real heart and good sense too. If she hadn't been looking after the pups she had with another dog soldier, she might have taken part in the final battle against the demon bear. Luckily she lives all the way until GNG (and doesn't die in it, either!) Long live Cross!
Rocket (Ginga Densetsu Weed): He's handsome because he's a Borzoi. He's noble because he was so moved by the loyalty he saw among Gin's pack members that he defected and joined them, wanting true friends. He has the sensible, calm, level-headed personality that suits a Russian Wolfhound. In short, I'd want him on my team. As well, if possible, as his brothers Jet & Missile. Oh, and of course, Cross's family--Ben, George, Ken, & Miney. I like SO many of the GNG/GDW characters, but since there ARE so many, I must limit it to my 2 absolute faves--Cross& Rocket.
Georgette (Oliver and Company): The biggest primadonna of the bunch, but you have to love the prissy purple poodle! I've always had her for a second-favorite O&C char; and she's such a great counterpart to Rita. The prep and the tomboy. It's terrific. I've always liked to think that after the events of the movie, they could become good friends--I do think it would be easier for Rita to adjust to Georgie's high-society lifest yle than vice versa, though. XD
Dixie (Balto): Cute, and somewhat flaky... Gotta love.
Sylvie (Balto): The gossip queen of Nome, an Afghan, Jenna's and Dixie's friend...I think she's awesome despite her small one-time role. I love hers and Dix's voices/personalities.
Dodger (Oliver and Company): Used to imitate him and sing "Why Should I Worry?" all the time.
Tramp (Lady and the Tramp): Suave. He and Dodge are two of the coolest canines ever.
Peg (Lady and the Tramp): I've loved "He's a Tramp" forever and I recall drawing Peg a lot. She just ruuuuules.
Boris (Lady and the Tramp): Another very handsome, distinguished, well-bred and culturedRussian Borzoi (with a harmonious voice.) I wonder why that poor guy's in the pound. He's so philosophical and learned, and not to mention, a heckuva lot more respectful than the other scoundrel-ish males in there.~^ I think he'd make a great pet/friend/mate for somebodies.
Ruby (Lady and the Tramp 2): The older, flirty Afghan-y tart from Buster's gang-and the only girl in it besides Angel. Once again we have a disproportionate male/female ratio and a girl who's one of the few who's earned the right to "run with the pack," whichever it may be. I like Ruby's design, kind of an older version of some of the others maybe. I can see where she would've once been really pretty-her past must be interesting, seeing as the Tramp "got away from" her. Yet another of his innumerable flings. Heck, maybe she knew Peg. I do wish we knew more about her. (And how squeeful it is to me that so many of my favorites like this are sighthound-types. :3)
Madame Mousée (An American Tail: Mystery of the Night Monster): A delightfully wicked little miniature poodle, a sympathetic villain, another fabulous singer and dancer, a unique design-could go on, but I bought this DVD as soon as I witnessed her musical number on TV.
Copper (The Fox and the Hound): Sweet, adorable, loyal, and noble character in a beautiful bittersweet story.
Chief (The Fox and the Hound): Always liked him. Ornery, but not a bad dog deep down..he loved to please his master. And he had a fun voice. And he was handsome. 8)
QT (Nine Dog Christmas): One of several cute Cocker spaniel types(including Bess of the ADGTH series...didn't list her only 'cause the series is really not so hot overall.)
Frenchy (Nine Dog Christmas): Interesting, multi-faceted character for this movie. Semi-'bad guy' who pulls through. Nicest looking dog, too, I think (he's a Bull terrier.)
Rosie (Krypto the Superdog): Nother adorable cocker, or whatever type of uncertain spaniel she might be.
Velvet (Millionaire Dogs): Small blonde spaniel teenybopper who wants to model.
Sylvia Marpole (An Extremely Goofy Movie)-anthro: She's the world's hippest librarian and one of 3 Bebe Neuwirth-voiced chars here. We can include doggish anthros, n'est-ce pas?
Roxanne (A Goofy Movie)-anthro Good, because I am including these great anthro sort-of-dog-peoples. 8D Roxie is a sweet, cool, & pretty little redhead, it's too bad Max apparently never saw her after high school.
Annabelle (All Dogs go to Heaven): In both of her "versions."
Charlie Barkin (All Dogs go to Heaven): Coolest guy dog ever, along with Dodger and Tramp and a few others mayhaps. I adore this rogue and his approach to life.
Belladonna (All Dogs go to Heaven-series): One of the best things about the series, far as I've seen. The sometimes-winged purple devil Whippet.
Persia (Road Rovers): So she has like, TWO lines and that's it. I can imagine what a cool character she could have been. Beautiful anthro Afghan...voiced by Sheena Easton, who did Sasha...and the leader of a bunch of space-fighting canine heroes just like Brainy? Persia could have been so AWEsome! *wails* Well Colleen is awesome, naturally.
Blitzen (Road Rovers): So lovable!!
Exile (Road Rovers): Nice accent. And oh, the bickering.
Fern (Arthur)-anthro: Arthur's pup c lassmate. I always imagined she might be part Bedlington. At any rate, she is cute and reminds me something of myself-quiet and bookish and all that.
Prunella (Arthur)-anthro if you look at her as a poodle instead of a rat: I never realized until somewhat recently that she might actually be intended to be a rat, but...XD Whatever, she is pretty neat. She's my other side, the side that's into the supernatural (not that I'm not into science and detective work like Fern, too.)
Beret Girl (An Extremely Goofy Movie)-anthro: Third Goofy girl. Roxanne always reminded me of myself a little too; this unfortunately nameless girl does to a degree. I think she rocks. Her and her beat poetry and finger-snapping and wise words and activism. 8D
Hot Dog (Krypto the Superdog): My second favorite Dog Star. I love how vividly bright red he is, too.
Tail Terrier (Krypto the Superdog): Third favorite is the little western terrier. He happens to be really vibrantly colored as well.
Killer (All Dogs go to Heaven): Killer is a kinda pathetic, good-hearted cutie voiced by the awesome Charles Nelson Reilly.
JD (Millionaire Dogs): Bella's new love interest-another Labrador (who, according to her, are all playboys--like some other fellas we know.) Although, how they figure he's a Lab, doesn't make too much sense...maybe it was a chocolate Lab?...but he must be a mix, and anyway, he's a good guy. The only one in fact who realizes what Miss Lilly really left them her fortune for. And he'll be good to Bella.
Cleo (Clifford the Big Red Dog): Spunky, cute little purple mini poodle. Somewhere between, say, Georgette and Mousée-she can get in a vain and snooty mood occasionally, but for the most part doesn't mind playing in the mud and roughhousing (while Mousée is a perfectly tough, non-prissy, yet still very feminine, poodle.)
Machiavelli "Mac" (Clifford the Big Red Dog): Das blue doggie. >3 Like his full name. And his attitude.
Balto (Balto): Who doesn't like the hero dog of Nome?
Little Lightning (101 Dalmatians 2: Patch's London Adventure): I felt so bad for the cute little Corgi...and Thunderbolt, though also likable, is such a ham. XD
Jenna (Balto): Likewise, who doesn't like Jenna?
Steele (Balto): I could say who doesn't like him, but...heh. He's likable in a great-villain sort of way.
Lady (Lady and the Tramp): A lot of people think she's among the best Disney leading ladies. I'd agree.
Krypto (Krypto the Superdog): *starts singing his theme song*
Pongo & Perdita (101 Dalmatians)-2 in one. I am cheating. So sue me. =P How'm I supposed to pick one over the other?
Canina La Fur(re) (Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers): Voiced hilariously by Carol Channing in two episodes-a pink, Georgette-like standard poodle star.
Runt (Animaniacs): I haven't seen him in a LONG time but I remember loving him and Rita best of all the Animaniacs characters. He was adorable. Loved Buttons too. And Rita sang so well-no wonder, her voice actress was Bernadette Peters.
Pluto (Disney): One of the true c lassics-I'd add them all on if this weren't a mere 50!! Ha.
Dinah (Pluto's Dutch Dachshund girl): Yeah, Pluto had a few girls too, and wound up marrying that Pekingese, Fifi-but my favorite one was the golden-colored Dachshund, Dinah, from the "In Dutch" cartoon. I believe there were more Dachshunds called Dinah in others, who were all dark. This particular Dinah was my all-time Disney short fav.

My top three...because I can't think of many others.
1. Scooby Doo- Even though I thought the human characters were more intresting, his interactions with Shaggy were hularious in and of themselfs. I loved it when he got over his cowardice to save his friends, and I feel like I can relate to him when it comes to that.
2. Brian (Family Guy) Oddly enough the voice of reason is a talking dog, and even he has flaws. Because of this he strikes me as the most human character in the show. Seth McFarland's voice alone is enough for him to make the list.
3. Menchi (Excel Saga) She's way too cute to eat. And yes, she is a dog. A lot of people have the tendancy to mistake her for a cat. Another dog that's smarter than most of the main cast, even though she can't really talk.
