As I've said before, there are alot of great characters originating in the animated universe, but there is only one Harley Quinn. :D

I voted Brainiac. It took STAS to make a real villain out of him. :)
Luminus was kind'a cool too, although they did nothing with him.
And, for the record, the greatest original creation of the animated world was the Kyle Rayner / Hal Jordan amalgam used in "In Brightest Day," the best team up episode of Superman ever, and easily one of the Top 5 Best Superman Episodes Ever.

Gotta go with Harley. She even got her own comic book!

Even though she got massively overused and became a pale copy of herself, Harley Quinn is by far the best animated character created for the series. Bar none.

I agree. But why was Brainiac listed in this poll? Shouldn't he be in a poll asking what was the best animated re-vamp of an existing character?

Does anyone have a list of all the original major characters they made up? I only started to read the comics, so its real hard to tell who is original and who isn't. In fact, Harley and Montoya were used so well since conceived that I first thought they always existed - and on the other hand, I thought Firefly was a one-time animated villain!
Oh, and my vote would have gone to Sid the Squid if he was on there... ;)

I could be wrong, but Lock up is not an original character but actually was in the comics first. Hmmmmm someone check www.batmantas.com

Lock-Up appeared on BTAS in November of 1994, and later appeared for the first time in the comics in 1996.
I'm sure I'll miss a few, but of the major characters that appeared on Batman or Superman here are the ones that were original creations of the animated series:
Batman
Harley Quinn*
Renee Montoya*
Hamilton Hill
Summer Gleeson
Lock-Up*
Red Claw
Nora Fries*
Arnold Stromwell (I think)
Roland Daggett
Dr. Emile Dorian & Tygrus
Sidney "Sid the Squid" Debris
Lloyd Ventris
Baby-Doll
Calendar Girl
Farmer Brown
The Judge
Roxy Rocket
Kyodai Ken
HARDAC
ADDED:
Grey Ghost
Sewer King
Big Fat Guy from "The Forgotten"
Nostromos
Phantasm
Clock King
also...
Earl Cooper
Arkady Duvall
Montigue Kane
Veronica Vreeland
Superman
Mercy Graves*
Angela Chen
Sul-Van (I think)
Livewire
Luminus
The Preserver
Gen. Hardcastle
Sgt. Cory Mills
Dr. Earl Garver
De'Cine
Volcana
Darci Mason
Gsplsnz
Unity
Det. Kurt Bowman
*These characters later appeared in one of the mainstream comic book series.

Thanks! Y'know, there was a time in the past when I used to have a life. I'm almost sure of it.

Thanks for the list, Toddman! Tho it does bring a question to mind: Nora Fries wasn't a Mr. Freeze staple before BTAS?!? She is like the most important part of his character! Who was Mr. Freeze 'before he was married'?
And were these people included in comics beforehand?:
Sewer King (Underdwellers)
Wormwood/The Interrogator (Cape and Cowl Conspiracy)
Big Fat Guy (The Forgotten)
Carl Fowler/Nostromos (Prophecy of Doom)
The Grey Ghost
Phantasm

And may I say that this poll seems incredibly unfair? Of COURSE Harley Quinn is going to run away with the votes. That should be a given. I, personally, [i]like[/i[ her, but never saw the incredible mass appeal of her character. That's just my personal taste though.

I knew I'd forget a few. (Maybe I do still have a life!)
Thanks, Borgie. As for the characters you mentioned...
Sewer King, Big Fat Guy, Nostromos, and the Grey Ghost (how could I forget him?) were all original creations of the animated series.
"The Cape and the Cowl Conspiracy" was based on a story from the Batman comics, but I've never read that issue. I assume, though, that Wormwood was a character in that book. The same goes for Bullock's landlord from "A Bullet for Bullock" and Anthony Romulus from "Moon of the Wolf."
And Phantasm/Andrea Beaumont is an original creation, but the look and the background of the character is somewhat similar to a character from the comics called The Reaper.
Also, even though the name is the same, the animated Clock King's secret identity, origin and M.O. is so different from his comic book namesake, I would consider him an original creation of the animated series.
So I will have to go back and edit my list from above.

Before his first appearance on BTAS in 1992, Mr. Freeze had no "real" name or secret origin. He was just a gimmick villian w/no past. After Dini and Timm's brilliant portrayal of the character, his comic book background was written to reflect his animated origins.

Blah! How could I have forgoten the Phantasm! But anyway, as somebody else said, I read about Renee Montoya during NML and I thought she was an original comic character.

If you're going strictly by originality, I've got to go with Luminus. As much as I love Harley Quinn you could argue that she owes a little bit to the Golden Age Harliquin (okay, that's stretching it, :D).

Funny you should mention that, Karkull. I was thinking that Luminus was very similar to the old JLA/Teen Titans villian Dr. Light.

Oh yeah, I forgot what is probably the biggest difference: The Clock King in the comics is an enemy of Green Arrow!

Wow, really? That clinches it. "Heart of Ice" is definately my favorite episode! Dini and Timm are geniusi!!!
Oh yeah and I voted for Harley. I'm surprised she was the last one to reach the mainstream comics!
Good Ol' Batmanuel!

I completely agree (on both of your points). She took the world by storm! Lock-Up, Brainiac, etc...are all cool, but their impact is not nearly as strong. Harley all the way on this one!

Yeah, I found this out a few weeks ago and it rocked my world. Everyone thinks of Freeze as being this tragic villain, but he wasn't even like than until Dini and Timm came along. The recreated the character, making him one of the greatest in Batman's rouges gallerey. Thanks Dini and Timm! :)
