View Full Version : Movie sequels can be stupid if they don't have the same impact

I went to see the Simpsons Movie, and they had a bunch of boring trailers, one of which is the sequel to Daddy Day Care called Daddy Day Camp. This is where they screw up. Not one of the cast from the original is there, especially Eddie Murphy. If you're going to have a sequel to movies, make sure you can actually get the original cast because that makes it more funny.

Sequels as good/better than the originals:
Toy Story 2
The Godfather Part II (haven't seen yet, but everyone says its great)
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
The Empire Strikes Back
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers/Return of the King
Spiderman 2
Kill Bill Volume II
Yeah, when done right, sequels can rock.

I think sequels that the OP was referring to are just cheap movies hoping to cash in on name-recognition. Liked The Mask? Then maybe another movie with "the Mask" in the title will get you to check it out, for example.
I don't think the original cast is as essential as a good script but they definitely help. Unfortunately, a lot of cheap sequels have neither and just grind out a cheap retread of the original.

The original cast IS needed when the original movie revolved around the main actor. (Jim Carry or Adam Sandler movies, for example)

Actually from everything I've heard the third Shrek movie is nowhere near as good as the first two.

Agreed. Are sequels often just cash-ins? Yes. Can they be mediocre just for the sake of making some more money? Yes. Can they be utterly unnecessary to a story that was tied up perfectly adequatly? Yes. But when does right, sequels and remakes can be superb exensions which extrapolate the concepts of the original film to build upon them and, in rare cases, even improve upon them. And you forgot Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, X2, Superman Returns (Not nearly as good as the original film, but underrated in it's own way, IMESHO), the original Dawn of the Dead, and Batman Begins. Yes, sequels usually suck. But sometimes they can be excellent.

Actually, I think that very, very few manage to be, but it certainly is possible.
