As expected, Arnold's Collateral Damagae was able to take the top spot in the weekend box office show down, although the opening gross is likely not as big as what was hoped. Somehow, Big Fat Liar managed to get second place over the equally bad Rollerball. Here's the rundown:

1. Collateral Damage - $15,180,000 ($15.2 mill)
2. Big Fat Liar - $11,700,000 ($11.7 mill)
3. Rollerball - $9,024,000 ($9 mill)
4. Black Hawk Down - $8,000,000 ($86. 7 mill)
5. Snow Dogs - $6,700,000 ($59.5 mill)
6. The Count of Monte Crisco - $6,300,000 ($32.2 mill)
7. A Beautiful Mind - $5,800,000 ($112.8 mill)
8. A Walk To Remember - $5,770,000 ($30.5 mill)
9. The Mothman Prophecies - $4,900,000 ($28 mill)
10. I Am Sam - $4,525,000 ($23.7 mill)

Next weekend will be the big showdown between Britney Spear's Crossraod and Disney's misguided Return to Neverland. But expect Bruce Willis's Hart's War to duke it out with Washington's John Q.. Next weekend will be interesting to say the least.

and Snow Dogs is still #5. Gee, is it just me or do I forecast a lousy trend in new releases for DVDs soon? These movies just tell me I will have plenty of money to spend on those Star Trek TNG season sets!

John Q looks like it should be a very interesting movie. I'm surprised Rollerball did that well, that movie looked horrendous.

You mean the "Fast and the Furious" clone? I swear some of the images from the teaser are directly from "Furious".

Jeez, I never really liked "Fast and the Furious" but "Rollerball" looks worse then that one. Lets not even get started with "Big Fat Liar". The only movie that it looks any good would be that "John Q" that's coming out next weekend.

John Q. looks to be the higlight of the season. Febuary and January is usually when the studios release their crap movies. This is usually the season where they just dump stuff in theatres.

No wonder last year felt like a very long winter.

I'm going to see John Q., but what big movies are coming up?

So LOTR finally dropped out of the top ten? Oh well, it had a good run. Any word on how close it is to beating the very mediocre Harry Potter, DG?

Lord of the Rings is about 60 mill short of beating Harry Potter. LOTR may get a second wind when New Line adds 4 minutes of footage for THE TWO TOWERS at the end of March to the movie. This will heklp give it a small boost and increase anticipation a bit more.

It would give me faith in Americans as conscientious consumers if it would beat HP. Thanks for the info James.

So does anybody else want to kick themselves in the head everytime they hear Britney Spears utter atrocious line after atrocious line in the ads for her upcoming movie? Glitter or Crossroads, which will be the bigger failure?

LOL! Ya know what I mean. It'll be 4 minutes from the Two Towers movie. :)

There's a slim chance LOTR could overtake Harry Potter, but it looks really unlikely. LOTR has currently grossed $272 mill, and New Line wants to bump that up to $300 if it can.

Oh well...maybe LOTR will do better with DVD sales and the extra minutes Jim mentioned. And if it does well at Oscar night it could help out too. I'm gonna keep hoping it'll manage to pass Potter.

Hopefully the LOTR sequels are going to outdistance the HP sequels. I wanted LOTR to beat HP, but I guess it makes sense. HP was much more mainstream and more of a "family movie" than LOTR. And we see how well even crappy family movies like Snow Dogs and Big Fat Liar are doing.

Whoever told her she could act needs to be kneecapped. But I'm not sure what's worse - the movie or that horrid song, "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." Sheesh I cringe every time I hear her warble.

LOTR placed at No. 11 during this past week, but expect it back in the top 10 next week due the buzz it'll no doubt get becuas eof it's Best Picture nod. I wouldn't be surprised if New Line includes this in the upcoming DVD release. With the extensive 3 - 4 disc LOTR set due in November, it would give them plenty of time.

And, I am so glad to see Ian McKellen nominated for an award. About damn time...

hey DG (some people still refer you as such) or JH, do you have the numbers for LotR worldwide gross?

James Harvey

I think the domestic grosses have been up there around $150 - 200 million so far. I'll have to do a bit more digging, but the total lies somewheres around there. It has been doing very impressive box office, although it's not surprising.
