In Today's (July 26th, 2007)'s Cynopsis Kids! newsletter, it seems that Disney Branded Films will no longer have either smoking or any tobacco based items in them. Here's the actual quote right out of Cynopsis Kids!

In a letter from the Walt Disney Company's President and CEO Robert Iger to Democratic House Representative Edward Markey yesterday, Iger said the company will no longer portray smoking in its Disney branded movies.

Disney is the first company to take such stand. The move comes two months after the Motion Picture Association of America introduced a new ratings system that takes into account the use of tobacco when rating movies.

Specifically, Iger explained in the letter that the company will, "discourage depictions of cigarette smoking in Disney, Touchstone and Miramax Films…. In particular, we expect that depictions of cigarette smoking in future Disney branded films will be nonexistent." Additionally, Disney plans to place anti-smoking public service announcements on all future DVDs release for all forthcoming movies that include smoking, as well as working with movie theater owners to run PSAs prior to movies featuring tobacco usage.

So there you go. It doesn't really surprise me that this was going to happen, and with Disney being the leader here in this "Smoking ban" in movies, it's only logical to guess who's next and what Disney will ban next from it's Disney Branded movies..

But let's hear your thoughts on this one.

As I said in a similar thread on the Disney board, this is one of the stupidest stories I've heard. When I first read it the other day, all I could do was just shake my head with a "Jeez." What's next?

I got a great laugh a few days ago. I was watching I Love Lucy on TV Land, and Lucy, Ricky, Fred, and Ethel were all standing around talking, and Lucy goes, "How about a smoke?" All four of them whip out cigarettes, light up, and just lounge around smoking as they chat. I was like, "Now there's something you don't see anymore."

Why Touchstone and Miramax as well? Those two studios aren't 100% family oriented.

I believe that it won't be banned from those two studios, but it will be "strongly discouraged."

I believe that's lawyer-speak for "we'll make production really annoying until you cave in." Looks like it might be a little trickier for Kevin Smith, who has smoking in just about all his movies.

Maybe because now we know smoking kills not only the smoker but the surrounding people

Mis intentioned and ultimately idiotic.

i presume this is because the use of tabacco has an effect on the ratings a movie gets?

I applaud Disney for making a good choice. Familly films should focus on familly vaules. Kids should be targeted at kids.

And of course, that's the show that they can't use the original opening for because it was sponsored by Phillip Morris.

I think it's a good idea, though I hope they don't go back and edit out smoking of their old movies (more than they already have, anyway). And they should make it more clear how it applies to Touchstone and Miramax, though I'll bet it'll be more of an "on-approval" basis for those two.

Anywho, I can't find it in me to get worked up over this. It's silly at best.

I know Donald's lit up a few times, but I'll be darned if I could find any images on the web. I guess Disney had them all removed.

Is this true even for R rated movies?

Is this true even for R rated movies?

Disney proper doesn't release R-rated films; they stick them under the Miramax or Touchstone banners.

Ah, well. Typical Disney. Harldy unexpected or something get all that concerned about or even interested in.

Exactly.

Don't. Do. That.

Times change. Think of it as evolution in action.

It could also be seen as hypocracy, given Disney's previous leanings. Let it swing either way, I suppose.

Is this true even for R rated movies?

Aside from the companies it owns, Disney itself wouldn't release an R-rated film would they? You'd have thought that the world was going to end when they released the PG-13 Pirates movies, with all of the stink that was raised.

They aren't really going to edit all of their movies right?

Oddly enough, the two cartoons that feature more smoking than any other were released by Disney.

It could be worse. They could be covering up swears or anything relating to the afterlife.

Just curious, what was the other one besides 101 Dalmatians?

It looks like they are going to put anti-smoking "public service announcements" on all of their upcoming older releases. Not unlike those bumpers they shoehorned in the Walt Disney Treasures sets.

The article also states that movie theatres are also being pressured to do this

I personally find it absolutely ridiculous to go to such lengths, but I suppose I'm not the one who linked smoking addiction to Disney cartoons.

I think it is bs. I watch TONS of movies with smoking, I even have my own characters smoking, but I absolutely abhore smoking and would never do it myslef.

Something that just occurred to me: how is this going to effect the future of Studio Ghibli's films? Disney can't edit those, and Miyazaki seems to enjoy animating a good smoke (Witch of the Waste, anyone?). I hope this doesn't mean more Only Yesterday-type deals with no releases outside of TCM specials.

Just curious, what was the other one besides 101 Dalmatians?Eh. 101 Dalmatians is incredibly tame compared to this (http://www.disneyshorts.org/years/1949/donaldshappybirthday.html) and this (http://www.disneyshorts.org/years/1951/nosmoking.html).

Will this scene happen for Cruella if the 101 Dalmations Animated movie comes out on a 2 DVD set in the future?

Would you like us to gaze into the future and find an answer for you? It's one low-quality paintover done by no one with any association with Disney. Don't take it as any sort of indicator of anything.

Only if 4Kids was involved with this.

Really now, this is, like, the first time anyone took any of my paintshop pictures seriously.
