I used to belong to the City of Heroes message board and this was the hot topic...

Actually the topic was how Todd McFarlane is getting sued, but the subject changed to the selling out of Todd McFarlane and then they started talking about how Metallica and Smashing Pumpkins sold out...

Thoes idiots went way off topic...

I personally don't think he sold out, I mean the guy did work for Marvel and left to do his own independant company. That was very risky, now that he's successful he's not doing as much as he used to. He doesn't draw anymore but he does provide the main story for Spawn, and he is now writing monthly for Sam and Twitch. Just because the guy is successful I don't think he sold out. That's like saying Stan Lee sold out.

Please leave comments on this subject, I will not judge...

Remember folks there are no right or wrong answers.

It depends on your defination of sell-out. If you mean that he's sold out because he doesn't draw his own book I don't think so. If you mean that he's sold out because Spawn has stagnated story-wise, however, I'd say yes. There are too many spin-off titles and it seems like he's just keeping the original title alive so it will remain appealing to Hollywood (Scud: The Disposible Assassin met a similar fate: the original creator ended the title prematurely, created a spin-off, and headed for Hollywood).

What I find interesting is that Neil Gaiman is suing him for the same reason that Todd left Marvel and started his own company in the first place, that he was instumental in creating a character but the company got the rights rather than the creator.
