View Full Version : Characters that get little respect

What characters do you think get little respect from the writers of their shows? I mean characters that rarely if ever play a big role in an episode or allowed to play a big role in the closing battles, kind of like seating at the kiddie table, while the real important characters fight. Or even appear in episode at all. And most importantly you feel could offer so much more. There are many characters that get little respect, and I think don't deserve much respect.
Here are some of my examples:
Mai and Ty Lee (Avatar: The Last Airbender) pacificly the end of "The Chase" and "Crossroads Of Destiny", Azula was involved in the epic closing battles, while they either just dried up after being thrown into a river, or guarding a dumb bear.
The HIVE (Teen Titans) first of all they are pawns of Slade and Brother Blood in "Final Exam" and "Deceptions", Slade even planned on them losing. Than they have to beg for a spot in the Brotherhood Of Evil in season 5. They are treated as junior villains, they are what I refer to as kiddie table villains.
Duff Killingen (Kim Possible) He was the main villain in his first episode "Number One", than whenever he appeared another villain or most cases villains appeared in the same episode.
All of these characters are villains, that is just a coisidence, this is not a villain thread, lord knows I started enough of those, but free for any character in general, weather on the side of good, evil, or in between. Though I don't consider Mai and Ty Lee villains, they are on the villain's side for now anyway.

Meg Griffin. I hope the upcoming episode that focuses on her and the revenge against her abusers is worth the wait.

Here's a few characters that I think that get little respect from the writers:
Good guys:
Jabberjaw(Jabberjaw)
Edd(E,E,& E)
Marcia Martian/Foxy & Roxy(Tiny Toon Adventures)
Minerva Mink(Animaniacs) - I wish the writers would of give her two more episodes involving her vs. Newt maybe.
Sven Hoek(Ren & Stimpy)
Kevin/Dog Poo(South Park) - they would of gotten more big roles after their 1st big role episodes besides be in the background.
Ezekial/robot turkey(Aqua Teen Hunger Force)
Space Rovers(Road Rovers) - As much as I miss the show, I wish the writers would of give them a few episodes since they're interesting and that their female captain is super hot next to Colleen.
Villains:
Liquidator(Darkwing Duck) - after his first episode, they would of give him more alone episodes besides be with the Fearsome Five.
Damien(South Park)
Ixis Naughus(SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog) - after his first episode "The Void", the writers would of give him a bigger role for continuing the next season since his glowing red eyes appeared in the season one finale while Robotnik's defeated.
Phantom Blot(Ducktales) - the writers would of give him a few roles like the Beagle Boys besides appearing in the comics.
Mandark's sister(Dexter's Laboratory) - after her first episode, she would of have more bigger roles like her brother.
Perfecto Prep(Tiny Toon Adventures) - the writers would of give them more roles after the Wacky World of Sports ep. by explaining more about their school/classes like with Acme Acres and give more other characters villain roles besides Roderick & Rubella.

I'm surprised noone's mentioned these yet:
Sokka (Avatar:the Last Airbender)
Half the cast of Tiny Toons (you know who I mean.
Wanda in later seasons of Fairly Oddparents.

I don't know, he has his moments when he is the hero. Jet and The Library and there is an upcoming episode called Sokka's Master which explaing itself. I guess he could have more episode when he is the hero, as oppose to a punching bag for the others to laugh at.
I do feel though that Aang stole Bato Of The Water Tribe episode from him. At the beginning it seemed the focus was going to be on Sokka when they showed him as a kid, but it take long for it to become about Aang and his feelings of neglete and not having the spotlight on him. And later about Aang getting that necklise back from Zuko.

Sven Hoek(Ren & Stimpy)
Well this is just a guess, but maybe the reason that these characters aren't regarded very highly by the writers and the viewers could be because they each only made one single appearance on their perspective shows. One episode characters can't really be counted as being underused. Most of them were only good for one episode anyway.
Anyway, some more underused characters:
Mom (The Brak Show)
Shirley the Loon (Tiny Toons)
Mabel Moozipan (Viva Pinata)
Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball Z)
The mom on Johnny Test
Sad how so many female characters are left in the lurch.

Hmm. Is this thread about characters who get no respect in the context of the show itself or is it about characters who are just underused by the people making the show?

A little bit of both, but mostly from the writers of the show, who underuse characters in importance and in number of appearence.

Thundercracker from Transformers G1, after the Coneheads(Dirge, Thrust, & Ramjet) showed up. Thundercracker was reduced to being in the background in scenes.

No respect, I always see that as a character who gets treated like garbage by most, of not the entire cast of the show, like for example:
Meg (Family Guy)
Blitz (Road Rovers)
Butters (South Park)
Waspinator (Beast Wars)

Actually in the Abridged Series, he's got his own catchphrase. He commonly uses the line "In America". As for the Abridged Series, I liked Kemo (sp?) and his "Attention duelists" line everytime you saw him.

Jan - Class of 3000
There is no character named Jan on Class of 3000. Perhaps you're thinking about the character Kam from that show, or maybe Flimation's The Brady Kids?

That dude? He has a name? OK, but he's a very minor character. Little more than an extra, really. He's only in, like 1 episode out of 4, and he's never played a major part in a story. How do you figure that he's a character ho gets no respect? he's barely been characterized enough to qualify.

Yeah, but I kinda thought how he keeps getting himself into mishaps like getting attacked by a psycadelical blob, and being bossed around by Principal Luna, I kinda thought he needed a bit more respect.

Grim(B&M)
Butters/Pip(South Park)
Ron(Kim Possible)
Jelly Jiggler/Dengakuman(Bo^7)
Mugen/Jin(Samurai Champloo)
Renton(Eureka 7)
Chris/Joe(Family Guy)
Barry(American Dad)
Iago(Aladdin) - Of course he's greedy/troublemaking, but I feel sorry for him when he gets bashed alot like when he gets turned into an hourglass.
GIR(Invader ZIM)
Jake's dad(AD:Jake Long)
Paul's pokemon(PokemonD/P)-no one has mentioned them yet which they totally get little respect.
Kenny/Max/Ray(Beyblade)
Gonzo(Muppet Babies)
Stimpy(Ren & Stimpy)

Chris/Joe(Family Guy)
Hmm...I think that Meg has been dissed far more often than Chris has. Chris has had some moments of genuine respect amongst his family and friends.
As for Joe, it's not that he gets treated like garbage, it's just that FG's writers are constantly writing gags and jokes where the audience is invited to laugh at his affliction. They keep writing more bits that draw attention to Joe's disability and make it the subject of laughter. It's not so much that the character receives shoddy treatment, it's just another example of the "How low can we go?" and the "How much can we get away with?" stance that the FG writers like to take.

I thought of a few. Of course there's Buttons of "Animaniacs." How he'd risk his life to save Mindy only to get yelled at when the episode ends. I'm also thinking Natasha Fatale of "Rocky and Bullwinkle" fame. All she does is support with Boris while he does all the dirty work. Plus he's always the one in the "Mr. Know it All" and "Bullwinkle's Corner" segments. Other than the one about the 'bully at the beach,' Natasha wasn't seen much there. At least Shego works independently every once in a while and gets to do things on her own. I think Natasha deserves that kind of respect as well.

Milhouse from the Simpsons
Syrus from YuGiOh GX
Guano from Kappa Mikey
Butters from South Park
I read that Trey and Matt said they based Butters off this animator who is such a goody-good, they can't seem to get him upset no matter how much they mess with him.

Mona Lisa (80s-90s TMNT): She had a lot of potential, but she only appeared in one episode!
RAINMAN

Cye from RW: The guy didn`t even get a ep to focus on him. Then there the 3 warloads. After they capture 3 of the 5 ronins in the inferno season, they became pritty much useless.
Gambit from 90`s xmen: After the 3rd season he only show up in a handful of eps and when he does he gets his butt haned to him.

Personally, I think this thread should be about the former, since it leads to better dicussion. Otherwise the thread is nothing but "omg (insert one-shot character name here) gets no respect cuz he wuz only is one episode!"

Post-Citadel of Doom and uh... pre-The Life and Times of Hannibal Roy Bean.
Season 2 was pretty rough for me. :p
Jack too I suppose.
But Jack is supposed to not get any respect... but then he is supposed to be competent.

I assume it was part of the joke. Normally he should be let go, but Powerpuff Girls along with Dexter usually ended their shows on an abstract or unexpected note.

I don't know if Rainbow the Clown should be counted since he was only victimized in his 1st appearance ("Mime for a Change"). In his next appearance "Birthday Bash", he was at the PPG's birthday party having a good time.
I don't think Abio from Pucca gets alot of respect. :( Course, that's sort of to be expected with a voice like that. I mean geez, could they have picked a worse one? But still, he's a cutiepie.

Also don't forget that episode Shaggy Frog and there was another episode about him in season one. But I agree with you about Trixie, no matter how much I dislike her
And yah poor Iago, it wasn't his fault he was greedy and evil. He got turned to evil by Jafar, he even wanted out bad. And he turned out to be not soo evil. I mean he saved there lives a few times when he had to and stayed when he needed to. Some times I wanted to punch the gang for talking bad about him

I don't know about Tails "doing everything" and Sonic "being nothing without Tails", but that's just the lot of the sidekick. No matter what Tails does, regardless of what he accomplishes, he'll always be thought of as Scottie Pippen to Sonic's Michael Jordan, or Robin to Sonic's Batman. In other words, Tails was created to be Sonic's sidekick, and that's all the public will ever view him as. Sonic is the star, that's just how it is.

You want to talk about a character that got little respect from the writers of "Sonic X"? Helen absolutely shone in one episode of "Sonic X". And then she was basically limited to cameos for the rest of the series. I'm not a Chris-hater as a few people are, but I think if there was going to be a human star on the show, I think she would have made a better choice than Chris.

Actually in the Abridged Series, he's got his own catchphrase. He commonly uses the line "In America". Well, Keith was only around for Duelist Kingdom anyway. I agree that he seemed like a fill-in character- he wants revenge on Pegasus, but who doesn't?
And just to add insult to injury, when Keith is eliminated from the finals, he threatens Pegasus with a knife. But since Pegasus has his "ancient Egyptian laserbeam" powers, he turns Keith's hand into a pistol and aims at Keith's head. WHe's basically forgotten from then on.
