Too vague an example. I've seen tons of fall-down scenes where you just see them...uh, fall down. Please specify and elaborate.

Say like someone says something stupid or ridicoulous and everyone falls down.

Why is it that so many people see something from another culture, & immediately pronounce it as 'stupid'. JEEZE! :mad:
Think of it as Japan's way of going "Doh!"-ala Homer Simpson...

Think of it as Japan's way of going "Doh!"-ala Homer Simpson... I'm pretty sure that when they want to say "Doh!", they don't fall backwards onto the ground :)

It's sort of a "Oh, brother!" type of reaction.
You can complain about sweatdrops.
You can complain about super-deformed faces
You can complain about knock-on-the-heads.
There are plenty of "strange" things you can complain about.
I don't get too caught up in cosmetic little things like this. Just accept it and move on.

A Japanese version of "doh" is probably the best example I've heard. Sweatdrops rock! It is just about over emphasizing human reaction to things. Suprise, anger, annoyance, naivety,etc., and making it more comical. You see the falling down bit a lot in Sailor Moon whenever Usagi says something stupid or overly obvious. Instead of everyone else rolling their eyes or sighing in exasperation, shaking their heads or making a remark....they fall down, or sweatdrop. It's just something that comes with anime and makes it humorous. If it bugs you, then you probably shouldn't keep watching anime, or at least ones that have that sort of thing in it alot.

Well I dont think people in Japan are falling down all the time anything strange happens. Saying something like DOH im sure is more common then falling on your back.

And I'm sure rabbit's eyes don't bug out and scream everytime they see something surprising...unless i do THIS!
<OH, MY, GOD!>
<AAAAAAH! HE'S INSANE!>
*Sirens*
<*KSHHHT* Sir, we're going to have to ask you to put down the scalpel. Sir, we have snipers all around the perimeter. Put Mr. Fuzzums down or...Oh, GOD! *retching*>
*Rifles crack through the air*
*silence*

It's called a cartoon. Real people don't drop anvils on each other, shoot Moon Spiral Heart Attacks, take a 10 ton gun out of their pockets, drive mecha, fly through space gates, shoot eye beams, throw cars at each other...
It's a "broad" reaction. Cartoon characters do that. That's what cartoons are for. :dot:

Its also less common to see yellow skinned people with 4-fingers, and big eyed cute school girls everywhere, or giant robots...
Uhmm....cartoons....yeah. Its called cartoons. As in animated...non-real. cartoon. uhmm...you get the point, right? Because..I for one don't watch cartoons for the realism...ahem...yeah... :rolleyes:

I don't watch anime, but isn't this the same kind of thing that Sesame Street does? At the punchline, Bert or Kermit or someone "faints"?
Same thing in "Rocky and Bullwinkle."

I'll answer your question as soon as you tell me the very first usage of the word "cool" as a non cold refrence, and as a simile for being good.
The point is, is that there isn't a set record of the 1st time it was done (well, it does exist, but the chances of any of us knowing it are slim to none.)
The whole falling down thing is more of an extreme example of the let down you feel when there's an anticlimax...
sorta of "There I was, the army of cops out to get me to my left, a pack of wild dogs to my right, I was out of ammo, my back to a wall, and a canyon in front of me....just as I thought I was dead....I woke up!" *Everyone falls down*
It's also used when people are being incredibly stupid. They just use the falling down to exagerate the feelings of the characters...

It's a manga staple. I imagine it came from a lot of "slapstick" silent movies as well...a lot of older foreign movies had this kind of slapstick response.
