The Supreme Court ruled today that outside interest groups can run negative campaign ads against a candidate without their campaign group's permission, as long as their ads don't explicitly say "Do or do not vote for so and so."

Essentially, this raises the number of venemous political commercials you'll see next year to the number "infinity." If you have a TiVo, an ad-skipping DVR or a mute button, good. We're going to need those things now more than ever.

Not only is this a pain for us, it's a pain for the networks. At a time when television is losing ad money to companies' knowledge of ad-zapping techniques, the last thing the industry needs is stuff like this that encourages fleeing from ads even further.

You know that in response they've been trying to embed advertising into the shows themselves...It makes me wonder which show will be the first to accept a paid political message written into the script.

"What's wrong, Betty?"
"I just found out I'm ugly because of global warming! Vote Hillary!"

Between this and the constant media coverage of Paris Hilton, humanity may have to give up television altogether.
