Wow, this certainly caught me off-guard. I think it's cool that Johnny Depp is lending his voice to the special. I wonder if he will speak English or maybe even Japanese? I also wonder if Johnny Depp likes anime?

I wonder if the Japanese company blew most of their budget for this episode in order to get him to voice in the special. Johnny Depp might be the only way this special would come to America. It would be a nice feature on the Pirates 3 DVD.

Uh.. Toei has nothing to do with Doreamon. Last time I checked anyway.

Oh, I was just going by the article. I'll edit it out of my post.

Wow. As the biggest Doraemon fan here, I find this really weird.
Pictures or not to prove otherwise, mentioning Toei Animation who's not involve with the production of Doraemon at all, makes this look really fishy.

This reminds me when Keifer Sutherland and Carlos Bernard were hired to appear on a Japanese TV sketch show as their roles on 24. Japan eats up American actors.

Though the thing with Toei is odd... maybe it's all a trap so Toei can kidnap Johnny Depp and hold him hostage.

Doraemon? What part of Toei + Jack Sparrow doesn't = One Piece special? But yeah Toei doesn't do Doraemon so that's especially fishy. I mean jeez they didn't even get Depp to voice his character on Kingdom Hearts II.

Depp agreed because of Doreamon's presence in France (he lives there most of the year).

Do the Japanese source sites mention Toei or was this just a brain fart on ANN's part when they wrote their article?

I heard that Johnny was busy doing work for Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest and At World's End at the time and wasn't avilable to do any VA work for the game but would of if he could (I mean he did voice Captain Jack in the Pirates video game series so I doubt he'd be against the idea VAing jack in another video game).

If this does turn out to be true it'd be a pretty weird crossover. Not to mention it'd bring about other weird anime/movie tie in ideas, like say the Fantastic Four in the Naruto world. Which yeah sounds ridicolous but so does this. (Then again the ideas for Kingdom Hearts first sounded ridiculous like 6 years ago but they sure don't now).

Citing Toei was a mistake on ANN's part so I doubt this is fake news.

They have changed it from saying Toei to saying TV Asashi now, and with teh pictures they have up it looks like it'll be accurate.

Plus, Doraemon has more mileage than KHII.

Isn't just like an actor doing a voice on the Simpsons? Although I'm interested to see if he does speak Japanese or English in it.

I saw a video on youtube of Depp on a Japanese talkshow and they had little kids dressed up as pirates and stuff, it was pretty funny.

Yeah, but it's not every day a famous American actor does a voice in an anime, especially on the Japanese side.

Seriously!
That has One Piece Filler with a Jack Sparrow-Esque character written all over it.

Well, Doraemon started up a new series last year, so yeah it's still going.

It's been going on for over 25 years, and I don't see it stopping anytime soon. :p

34 years if you count the original 1973 series.

Honestly, how much more can they pump out of this series? I'm just amazed that the second series lasted for over 1,000 episodes! Are the writers that creative with this show or do people just have an unbreakable loyalty to Doraemon?

Considering it still gets high ratings, they must be doing something right.

Cap'n Jack in an anime. Cap'n Jack knowing what Doraemon is is awesomeness in and of itself, but doing a voice over? They GOTTA bring that to America.

That what makes this even more wierd. Of all the anime, why something that never aired in America? For a publicity stunt, it's pretty, well, one-sided.
I wonder if they'll air the Doraemon: Adventure at the South Seas movie, that movie was the first one(?) to have English speaking characters in it.

I don't think Disney has anything to do with it. It seems like it was Depp's decision and his decision alone.

I believe it airs in France and Depp spends most of his time in that country now.

I doubt that. Japanese anime aren't really in the process of hiring popular, foreign actors to voice in them.

I'd guess this was some decision made by Depp seeking this out, or something along those lines.

Maybe it's not the norm, but a good number of Japanese games/shows/commercials have hired American people to perform in them. It's not as unlikely as one would think. Pirates 3 is the #1 movie in Japan while Doraemon is one of the top cartoons in Japan, makes sense they'd want to combine the two.

It's still one of the most popular shows in Japan, and Japan is the seccodn biggest economy in the world after the USA. Makes sense to me. Doraemon is also really popular elsewhere in the world, just not here.

Why haven't they attempted to bring this show to the U.S. yet? It seems like it would do well here.

I believe they've tried, but the various deals fizzled out for one reason or another.
