View Full Version : Why is the "World's Finest" a boy's club?

What about Diana? Surely she is one of the world's finest heroes.. why is she not included? I know she hasn't always been perceived as a powerhouse before, but in JL that is changing, and in the comics it is changing.
How about "Triumverate of Justice" or simply "The Triumverate" instead... where all THREE can show their stuff.

I'm confused. Do you mean opening a new message board?

WW is on the cover of the upcoming JL DVD with Bats and Supes. She's probably the 3rd most recognizable member in the group. If that's what you mean.

The "Big Three" of the JL/JLA has always been Batman and Superman. They have been the two most widely recognized comic book characters ever.
If you're referring to the World's Finest banner seen on this page, then I would guess it is because that is the name of the first Bats/Supes episode on TNBSA.

I can't resist.
Is it Batman or Superman who's so good he counts as two?
:D

Yikes! I meant to include Wonder Woman in there. Sorry Diana! You're still my favorite bikini clad Amazon.

I'd go with Batman, cause he's so dual personality

This is actually a good point.
I think for the most part it has been two simply because the dual contrast of Bruce and Clarks personalities make it fun. The title of"Worlds Finest" was just basically the tagline used for this since they are the two first and most well known superheroes in the world.
But you are correct, Diana is right up there with them.
While I would still want any version of the first "Worlds Finest" story to be about Superman and Batman, it *does* make total sense to bring Wonder Woman under that banner afterward. Because going by the title itself and the logic used behind it, she deserves to be there.
I was actually in the process of creating continuity for an Elseworlds tale (no not something lame like Pirate Superman) where the first and only superheroes you had for years (starting with a certain heros first appearence in June of 1938) were Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman who occasionally banded together as the "Worlds Finest". This basically being the first superhero team that would later be expanded into what becomes known as the Justice League.

I should have been clearer, sorry. I meant to say, why is it that the "World's Finest" comic book heading only includes Bats and Supes. I didn't mean the message board. LOL
And, I am curious, with Diana's 60th anniversary last year, when did Superman and Batman appear?

I found it... Superman came out in 1938, Batman in 1939, and Wonder Woman in 1941... not exactly too far apart. She was short changed... "World's Finest" should have included Diana.

Maybe it's because she doesn't have her very own city to protect. (Maybe I shouldn't give DC any ideas. Knowing them and their fictional geography, they'll make her the protector of Central Sunshine City or some such.)

The same argument could be made for King Orin, Lord of Poseidonis and Sovereign of the Seven Seas. After all, if one is to associate the heroes of DC with the Greek Gods, Aquaman would be the Poseidon to Superman's "Zeus" and Batman's "Hades".
In Greek Mythology, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades were brothers who divided the world into three sections, then cast lots to decide who would rule what sections. Zeus won the first round, and he selected the sky. Poseidon won the second round and he picked the sea, leaving Hades with the Underworld.
Zeus = First among Greek gods. (Superman - First among heroes)
Poseidon = God of the Seas. (Aquaman - Guardian of the oceans, who's capital city is Poseidonis)
Hades = Master of the Underworld, and who determins who goes to The Elysian Fields or Tartarus. (Batman - Self-appointed watcher of Gotham's Underworld)
If it's going to be a triumverate, then King Orin should be in it.
My two cents.

Wonder Woman makes her home in Gateway City, California when she's not out saving the world.

According to the comic book, she's in Manhattan sharing an apartment with Donna (her sister).

How about that? You know, there can never be enough superheroes in DC NYC. :D

I don't know if anyone is looking for this simple of an answer, but "World's Finest Comics" was a series published by DC Comics and ran from 1939 to 1986. Initially it featured seperate adventures of Superman and Batman & Robin. Eventually the heroes began to appear in stories together. (So it seems that Robin would actually have the first claim to being included in that title.)
The Superman-Batman animated cross-over borrows its name from that comic book series.
Also...when Wonder Woman was "re-launched" in 1987, she was based in Boston. When John Byrne took over the series, he relocated WW to the fictional location of Gateway City. Now that Phil Jiminez is handling the book, she is in New York. Before 1987, WW's base of operations was usually NYC or Washington. She was one of the few DC heroes that did not live in a fictional city in the Silver Age.

Yep, and sometimes it would even say:
"Featuring your two favorite heroes: Superman and Batman & Robin!"

A large part of this is based on the fact that they were the only three DC characters to star in their own comics which continued from the Golden Age on into the Silver Age. Some people also talk about the "Big Five" which refers to the five characters to headline their own series which continued on into the Silver Age... the other two being Aquaman and Green Arrow who survived in backup strips.
