View Full Version : what piece of modern technology could you do without the easiest?

During the recent ice storm that hit my area, many of us had to do without certain modern conveniences for quite a while, particuarly electricity and phones. Some of this really puts a person into a survivalist mode where other things just don't mean as much for a time. Such as the day after the storm, I was more concerned about just suriving and worrying about how I would eat and finding a flashlight and getting the bare basics more than anything else.

More than a week later, people are still without electricity and it got me to thinking....If you were stranded on a desert island, what modern conveniences could you stand to be without?

I would have to pick phones as the one I could probably get by the easiest without over any of them.

With a normal phone or cell phone I could call a boat and get off the island. I don't think I understand the question, are you asking about

1)what we'd miss the most if we were on a desert island?

or

2) if right now, someone said they are going to permenantly take away one of my cool little technological toys(e.g. a calculator or phone), but I'd still be in the normal world just without the use of that specific thing for the rest of my life, which thing I would have them take?

On a side note I am now taking bets as to how long Cal's current avatar lasts.

AoL 7.0. My brother just uploaded it last night...uhg...it sucks. Its basically the same dang thing we've had since 4.0, only now...its slower. DAMN YOU AOL!!!! I'm only using it because I get it for free... :D
Otherwise..I'd say I can live soundly without a VHS. I dont really tape any shows anymore..the only shows I'm interested in lately are in the anime section of Best Buy.... :p ....and on CN in the evenings..when I can watch it.

I vote for both Netscape & cell phones. My experiences with both have been... less than pleasant.

Palm pilots, DVD players, video games. I don't really use any of those anyway (*listens to collective gasps of "blasphemy!"*). Heck, I barely watch TV as it is.

Telephones. I really can't stand 'em.

Coffee maker. I don't drink coffee so it would be no loss at all.

But ironically you need a phone line to be on the Net, so... I see your point--nothing worse than phone calls while i'm cooking/washing dishes, and esp. solicitors. I haven't even enjoyed using the phone since 1997 (long steamy story). For me, I'd say things like hair curlers (my sister-in-law's g.d. near set their bedroom on fire, inexplicably getting turned on while it sat on the dresser), electric razors (I can cut the devil out of my face just fine with a manual job), and other personal hygiene/vanity apparatuses. What I DO need is a gaget that can cut a row of perfect onion ring in 2.5 seconds....
