View Full Version : Are you addicted to the Internet?

Do you feel like you need it? How much time do you spend online? Do you feel like that is productive time?

I don't even have the Internet at home, because I feel like I do have a serious problem with it. But that really hasn't stopped me since I discovered I have it at work and I use it constantly from there, including right now. I don't even do much with it, mostly just checking forum sites like this one all day long for continuing conversations.

But it still eats up a lot of my time and makes me feel less productive. I still get my work done because, well, I'm very fast at writing news stories.

I took the test linked in this blog and it said I'm an average Internet user. So I'm not sure about the accuracy of it, but I put it in here for you to judge.

I depend on the internet for my schooling, main contact with a lot of my friends, my boyfriend, and some of my family, and personal things. So that definitely has a great impact on the time I spend online. But let me put that aside for a second.

I do think that I spend too much time online, doing nothing, and I definitely do think that I have become far too dependent on computers/the internet over the years. However, I think I'm probably less dependent now than I was, say two years ago. I think '04-'05 was probably the worse of it for me. At least, that I recall. Oh, and the summer of '01. ><

I can easily waste hours away doing barely anything online, especially if I'm on AIM. I'm not sure that the hours I waste on AIM are the same as just surfing sites, though, since a.) I multi-task, b.) I'm talking to friends, and c.) I spend the most time on AIM at night, when I'm not going to be doing much of anything, anyway.

So anyway, the test said I'm an average internet user, but it was a point away from the next level. However, I'd be lying if I said I cared what the test says. =P

I got a 52. I'm above all you puny 'average internet users', even if just slightly. Muhahahaha.

Anyways, I don't think it's a problem. I'm not really wasting away or anything. The internet is my primary way of talking to my girlfriend at the moment, as well as many of my friends. Not to mention many of said people I met over the internet. I consider it an aspect of my social life. Certainly, if it were the only aspect of said social life, that'd be a bad thing. But having it be a part of it is just fine, I think.

I do like to get up, walk around, etc frequently, so it's not like I'm glued to the screen or anything. I like moving around, so that probably helps.

Computers have just made us ever more lazy. And every post that'll come after mine will mostly prove that. and the ones before mine.

I was addicted to the internet probably over 10 years ago. Now I get on to check a pre-determined number of sites, then I log off and go do more productive things. I've gotten bored with it over the last decade.

I used to worry about whether I was addicted to the Net, but now I realize I was just being dramatic. Go read a definition of "addiction" and talk to someone who's been through it before you declare yourself an addict. People who drive everywhere don't worry abou car addiction. The Net is just a modern convenience. Using it to procrastinate makes you lazy, not an addict.

A score of 29. All that for nothing. =P

A lot of time online is general spent being idle, after I've gone through the usual routine (emails, messages, sites, IM a buddy or two, ect). Oddly enough, the quickest way to get me offline is to give be a task to perform on the internet. Surfing then becomes a "chore" and I become more inclined to pursue other interests.

I got a 30, which says "You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage."

That's more or less about accurate. I have a certain routine I follow when I first get on-line in the morning. Check email, check forums for replies/new topics, check a few websites I frequent for news updates and such. Sometime I don't bother post on forums right away, but want to just sort of catch up with what's happened (if anything) overnight, then I'll come back later and do some posting.

Recently I've tried to reduce my time spent on the Internet becuase, as someone else already mentioned, much of it is just spent kind of idle once I've completed my routine. Lately, I've been trying to stick to a schedule of just "catching up" (as I described above) in the morning, then spending most of the day away from the Internet until later at night when I can just spend a few hours posting, browsing, and just messing around.

The test said I'm an average internet user with a score of 46.

I may spend a lot of time online, especially on AIM talking with friends, but I do play college sports and take honors classes and all that so it's not like the internet is my entire life. When I'm at home I go out more often than not with friends and I work in the summer. So while I may spend most of my free time online, the rest of my life doesn't suffer for it.

My best friend in college was a drug addict, although he's been in AA for years. I would never compare my Internet use to what he went through and still struggles with.

But I still find it disturbing that when I have access to it I have trouble tearing myself away from it, even if I'm doing nothing and there are things that are more fun available for me to do.

Look at my post count, and compare it to how long I've actually been a member of Toon Zone.

That alone shows how much of an internet addict I am.

I got a 36. An average internet user... I honestly thought I'd get way higher than that. But I hardly go online during the weekdays... I mean my computer is on but it's not in use...

20 - 49 points: You are an average on-line user. You may surf the Web a bit too long at times, but you have control over your usage.

My score was 25.....HA?

Oh, I think I'm totally addicted to the internet. I'm on it all the time, I defintely spend more time on it than doing anything else. When I have to do homework on my computer I need to disconnect the internet just to get anything done at all and even then I'll just end up reconnecting it and leave all my homework till the last possible second. Of course I might do that with out the internet anyway :sweat:

I got a 55 on that test, I though I'd get higher! I probably could have.

Wow, I got an 63. I clearly am an internet addict. I wish I could spend a lot of my free time better, but it just feels like part of who I am, sadly. I also have so many friends that I talk with via online, and I like to keep in touch. Luckily I do more stuff during the Summer, and I plan on getting a job soon.

I only score 36? Average online user? If that's all I get, the rest of you are screwed. =P

Then again, despite spending an obscene amount of time online or on computers in general, most of it's related to school, work, or hobbies, to the point that I look forward to getting away from them when possible. Not really "addictive" behavior, I fear.

A 29? i got jyped, it should be like 15 or something...

If i had friends who would always wanna hang with me, and if i had a GF to sit around playing video games, i wouldnt be on the net that often. I apperently dont have a GF at this time and my friends are always busy or something.

I just go online to check stuff out, come here and say my mind, and talk to others...

I was kinda being sarcastic when I said "I own you all". :p

The good news is, I am developing something that resembles a personal life, so that score may drop soon.

I got a 29 too.

It probably would've been a lot more if it were back in August-November, when I was using the internet more than I currently am.

I got a 45 so I'm average. I love going on the internet though, I like finding my news on different websites and knowing about upcoming cartoons from here and other places. But I do know when to stop and go out and have fun.

Ironically, I got a 29 on that test.

I found this question funny.

10. How often do you block out disturbing thoughts about your life with soothing thoughts of the Internet?

Why would the Internet soothe my worries when 75% of it is b****ing? :anime:

And to think, you think this way without having witnessed the TZ chat drama.:shrug:

40.

I'm definitely on the internet more than I probably should be, but all in all, my social life hasn't suffered because of it. I have everything I need, money to survive, great friends and family, and enjoyable hobbies (usually consisting of being online, but hey, a hobby's a hobby). Yep, the internet just adds spice to my already enjoyable life.

Oh yeah, that question was hilarious.

Which is why I hate tests like that. They always come off as passively insulting, particularly to your intelligence. If people have an opinion, they should just spit it out instead of forcing the person to admit to it via grading scale.

"How often do you escape from public interaction and stay glued to a monitor for hours on end?"

1 = Rarely.
2 = Occasionally.
3 = Frequently.
4 = Often.
5 = Always

Boy, I bet I'll get the answer I want if I choose five. =D

24.

Considering my part-time job is to sit by a computer for 8 hours, I've basically seen it all. It's a chore for me to go online most of the time.

The internet is, like, so last year.

By the way, this question

How often do you prefer the excitement of the Internet to intimacy with your partner? was too funny.
