The second point is a sales chart -- one of the few I'll show. What this shows is the monthly cumulative sell-through for hardware in the US for this year. If you can't see it clearly there in the back, the red line all the way at the top is Nintendo DS. The second line is Wii. The third line, interestingly, is PS2, not PS3. PS3 is down there at the bottom, just holding off Game Boy Advance. [Laughter from the crowd]

While I don't really agree with people in the industry making comments like that, I do find it funny that Nintendo, of all people, did it this time.

When the Wii was first shown, they had the whole "We aren't competing with them" mentality. Probably because they though in the back of their mind that they could bomb hard again after the Gamecube. But now that their doing so well, they start talking trash.

You would think that Nintendo, of all people, would know that this kind of stuff could come back to haunt you later.

But will the combined strength of The Giant Enemy Crab AND the awesome might that is Ridge Racer be enough to stop the game giant Nintendo from raping every hole in Sony's plan?

But is it REALLY trash talking if it's the truth? :p I mean I always considered trash talking to be more akin to insults and usually lie...but if those sales numbers are true then it's not really trash talking right??

The last part of the comment could be take'n as trash talk but it is true (at least currently).

All this really says to me is that Sony should have continued with the PS2 at least another year and brought it out with a killer launch line-up. Games sold the PS2 plain and simple.

From the looks of it, the real-time weapon changing won't come in the form of MGS4 (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6171277.html) or FFXIII (http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/23/no-final-fantasy-xiii-this-fiscal-year-not-before-april-2008/#comments) since neither is coming in 2007.

i'm probably one of the few who is not down with the trash talk issuing from reggie's mouth. i was a firm fan when he said the wii would be in a category all on it's own. but, now that it's outselling the other consoles, reggie eats his previous words and is putting the wii back into the mix? uncool in my opinion

though, it is quite humorous that the ps3 is having troubles outselling the gba

And take in account that they lost the FF exclusivity, only games like MGS and Devil May Cry might help the PS3 to stay alive.:raven:

It'd be one thing if PS3 was 2nd to the Wii, and Reggie was taking pot shots at that. But PS3 is below the PS2 right now. Really, who isn't taking pot shots?

I don't even have a PS3 and have no current plans to get one, but statements like this are just wrong. We don't know what killer apps might be developed in the future, and those could be more important than any of these big sequels in the PS3's future. Also, no console can survive on the strength of one or two big games. The PS3 needs to develop a broad, accessible software library if it is going to survive.

This Christmas will be very decisive in the PS3's future. Sony should be throwing money at Kojima and Square to get MGS4 and FFXIII out around November.

Yash

He's not really comparing the Wii and the PS3, though. It's more of a "Haha, PS3 is losing to GBA." I think if the third line really was the PS3 (instead of the PS2), he wouldn't have made a comment like that.

And really, how many analyst reports have you seen lately that put Nintendo in a favorable position?

FFXIII has been confirmed for mid-2008, in Japan. Don't expect it in America until fall 2008 at the earliest.

You're quite a bit late...the price was the first one.

Anyways, everyone trash talks in this industry. Even people that used to work for the companies that they're trashing...don't forget how many former Nintendo guys work for Microsoft now.

The PS3 jab was in good taste...when the most technologically advanced console of a generation is selling only slightly more than a 6-year-old obsolete handheld, there are some obvious problems happening.

Anyways, I don't really care much about what Reggie talks about, I just want info. MP3, SSBB, and Mario coming out this year are terrific, but I'm really more interested in new original properties.

One must wonder what the hell is Sony going to do now? They blew last year's holiday season by offering absolutely nothing (yeah Resistance, Fall of Man you're hardly a game) and this holiday season, what's their killer ap? NOTHING! By the time FFXIII comes out (which will probably be 2009 considering the delay of XII), the PS3 might not even be available for sale!

Sony... you put Sega virtually out of business... why didn't you learn from them?

Annoying?

I don't know, but I do know he has had a major hand in reinvigorating Nintendo's image over the past few years. Although, the fact that EGM never ran their "One Year In" interview with him makes me wonder about his private personality.

Aren't there ANY exclusives PS3 can get that can get people interested in the system?

It's just "Sonic in Super Smash Bros. Brawl" levels of likely.

Pokemon kept the Gameboy Color alive long enough for the Advance to come out.

Heh, the only way I could see making the PS3 worth it is if they figure out a way to minimize blu-ray costs, and fast.

If the PS3 fails, the next sony system probably won`t continue the numbering system, and may not even bear the playstation name, although the latter is far less likely. More likely is "Playstation (insert random letter here)".

Halo?

Shawn Hopkins
05-24-2007, 01:47 PM
Bull on both counts.

First, quality doesn't matter that much to a handheld because they are most often played by children. You might not think licensed crap is good, but enough parents bought games with cartoon characters on the box to buoy the Game Boy. Pokemon alone would not have done that.

And the Xbox, of course, had many more good games than Halo. That's just the stupidest possible fanboy nonsense. Many of them including Halo also got PC ports, but a system on which you can play both KOTOR's, Psychonauts, Morrowind, Ninja Gaiden, Fable and a host of others can't be said to have limped along on the strength of its most popular game. You might as well say the Playstation was only a success because of Final Fantasy VII.

Andrew T. Hingson

You might as well say the Playstation was only a success because of Final Fantasy VII.

It wasn't?

All kidding asside. Every console is going to have "that game" which people would buy the console for but that's not enough to keep it afloat.

GB got a booster shot thanks to Pokemon but it's large library of games and fair price is always what got the hardcore gamers to buy each version while the shovelware and family friendly standard made it a hot item with families and a top seller for children in particular. GB had a game for everyone though. Much like the PS2 does now and the PS1 before it. That's why they sold so well.

Xbox had quite a few great games but they were mostly overshadowed by the success of Halo. Its the game people play together, online and even at parties. Smash Bros. is about the only game I ever see people playing at group gatherings when a GCN is present. Those games may be the more commonly played ones (especially at gatherings) but they weren't the sole reasons the consoles found success some point in their runs.
