The beginning of the trailer kind of makes it out to be some kind of LOTR parody, but it gets serious after that.

Eva Green and Daniel Craig in another movie together? Were they cast before or after casino royale?

Golden Compass was on my syllabus for the children's lit class last year, and i bought it and the subtle knife, but i never got around to read them. good a time as any...

I kind of fear that people who see this in front of Pirates who haven't read the books will be put off by another movie featuring a special compass-like item, and Iorek's lip-synching looked a bit off to me, but other than that it looks great. I loved the books, and based off the heresy line it seems they're keeping the anti-organized religion elements. Daniel Craig will be a real treat as Lord Asriel.

Well, I've never read the books, although I have a very basic knowledge of them, so the trailer was interesting, to say the least. Sam Elliott continues his eternal cowboy typecast (which is fine by me; nobody these days is better at being a cowboy than him), Nicole Kidman gets sinister, and Daniel Craig and Eva Green semi-reunite. Oh, and I can't forget the talking polar bear. It definitely looks intriguing.

Christ Weitz? What the heck?

I think Weitz is a decent choice.

The casting of Kidman and Craig are very good, but I can't say the same for the other Kidman and Craig movie coming out.

I've got to hand it to Pullman. If people are wary of this film, either for riding a trend or for its attitude to religion, all you need to do to convince them it will be the best fantasy film of the year is to utter the three magic words: Armoured Polar Bears.

Maybe. I just know him In Good Company, and American Pie, which makes me see him as an odd choice. Then again, Peter Jackson surprised me with LOTR and Adamson knocked me out with Narnia, so who knows? There's always hope. I so must read the book now.

Wait, wait, wait. Armored Polar Bears (from you spelling, I'm guessing you're English)? This movie has ARMORED POLAR BEARS? TALKING ARMOURED POLAR BEARS? And Nicolce Kidman and Daniel Craig? Oh, I am so there! What attitude does it have towards religion? Is Pullman athestic or somesuch?

Oh, and the book is called Northern Lights. They changed the title for some inscrutible reason for the U.S. release. I wonder if they'll go with the original title for the U.K. release?

The bad guys are a theocratic government that removes children's souls believing they are getting rid of Original Sin in the process, and in the second and third books there's a Paradise Lost parallel where Daniel Craig's character joins with a group of fallen angels to wage war against The Kingdom of Heaven. It's more against the construct of organized religion than religious beliefs themselves, but the people who think Harry Potter is Satanic are going to have a field day with this.

Geez. I think this is more proof than anything that Original Sin does exist. If the natural tendency is to become this much anti-God....

It's not really 'anti-God' if the main contention is that there really isn't a God.

Semantics FTW!

I wonder if Philip Pullman watched Neon Genesis Evangelion?

Oh, Anime UK News, where would we be without you?

Excuse me while I go collect my spleen. I believe my sides have split.

Next I'm wondering if they're going to ponder whether Richard Dawkins was inspired by Scrapped Princess.

What's the joke? I'm lost.

Well, if you're familiar with both Evangelion and Pullman, the suggestion that the latter owes the former a debt will seem a little... unfounded.
