View Full Version : Family Guy "Meet The Quagmires" Talkback

It's the Season Finale Of Family Guy at 9PM(And the 98th Episode. Not as impressive as 400 or even 100 which will come this fall but still worth noting) And this is the talkback for it.

http://library.toonzone.net/talkbacks/fox.jpghttp://library.toonzone.net/talkbacks/familyguy.jpg

SYNOPSIS: "Death grants Peter's wish to go back in time to 1984 when he was 18, but only for one night. He ends up bailing on a date with Lois to hang out with a movie actress. When he returns to the present, he soon realizes that everything is anything but normal, as he is now married to the former actress, and Lois is with Quagmire. Meanwhile, Stewie, Chris and Meg have also taken on Quagmire's charming characteristics."

There are a few known jokes for this for anyone who reads Entertainment weekly (EW admits they and FG have had a "tickle and slap" fight over the years from EW giving FG a bad review of the show to Stewie snapping the neck of an Entertainment Weekly contriubtor in the DVD opening for "Stewie Griffin: The untold story") which makes it sound liek a pretty decent 5th Season Finale. In the fall stay tuned for the 6th season which has a lot of interesting eps in it, including the American Dad crossover you all knew was coming at one point.

Anyway enjoy this ep everyone!

Looking forward to it. Though in regards to 6th Season episodes, I read that "Blue Harvest" is actually a one-hour episode that's set in the Star Wars universe. Is that true? If so,     :D

The Jetsons gag was gold...I always thought that that bit in the opening was ripe for comedy, and FG found it and exploited it.

Lovin' the BTTF references..."Ronald Reagan? The actor?!"

Also love the liberal utopia in this timeline...Cheney shot Scalia, killing Rove and, more importantly, Tucker Carlson.

Definitely a bit weirded out by Quag-Meg being attracted to Peter...using the reversal of this situation, wouldn't she be attracted to Quagmire in the regular timeline?

It kind of did. It didn't have those semi-forced cutaways that Season 4 and part of Season 5 did.

An overall good effort. It was very cohesive(for Family Guy), but with the right amount of randomness.

Aside from containing the most blatant Republican bashing and Democrat butt-kissing ever, it was the second-best episode of the season (the premiere, if I remember correctly, was just as well-written but a bit funnier). This show has the opposite problem of The Simpsons in that it's at its best when it focuses mostly on the father. Obviously they can't do that in every episode, but I think Peter Griffin really is the core of the show and needs to be in the forefront more often. The other characters aren't very unique, and therefore they tend to generate less unique humor.

The Jetsons cutaway was pretty good but in truth I liked the one from "Brian in Love" a lot better, with George storming in and chewing out Jane after she didn't rescue him from the conveyor belt. Plus George's voice was more spot-on that time.

Between Family Guy and the last six minutes I suffered through of The Simpsons, it looked like this was "Blatant Republican Bashing" night.

Otherwise, great episode. I'm a huge Back to the Future fan, so all those references were gold, especially the "Ronald Regan? The actor!?" bit which really took me by surprise.

Loved Peter screwing up his attempt to get back together with Lois and having to keep calling Death (though didn't Brian say Death only appears when someone dies and can't be summoned just by calling), and the Quagmire-influence kids were hilarious looking, especially Stewie. Also loved Peter "singing" along with the Beverly Hills Cop theme, the Die Hard dialogue, and the cameo by Roger at the very end. Oh, and the Chicken's cameo was great. "You'll probably never see him again anyway." :D

Technically, "Stewie Kills Lois" was supposed to be the season finale, but this is a fahn, fahn replacement. The best part about the Jetsons cutaway was that it WAS the opening and not a parody drawn in the FG style to save copyright money. The extra cash was worth it.

Peter was at his Season 2/3 best. Roger at the end was equally awesome, but I hope that wasn't the promised AD crossover scene and that we're getting something more elaborate come September.

A perfect world under Gore....riiiight, you just keep telling yourselves that. Wait'll you guys elect Hillary.

So because Peter found his true love in Lois 'early' in life, he never got to hang out and play the field? Then again... maybe going back to 1984 isn't that bad after all... especially given Lois at 18. Va-va-VOOM!

As many have said, light on laughs, but good on story, so it was alright.

Funny stuff: Brian complimenting a nearly-perfect USA with Gore as President; Jetsons theme song gag; Peter's constant screwing up of 'getting it right' with Lois; Brian singing 'Back to the Future' style at the school dance.

But at least in the end, everything got back to the way it should be...

I... think... Roger?

"Meet the Quagmires": 3/5.

I was actually happy with this episode. I didn't watch all of it (cause I was busy watching the Bob and Doug 2-4 Anniversary!) but it did seem a LOT better than pretty much all the other recent episodes I've seen. It wasn't perfect, but it was more like Season 3 quality, which is a very good thing IMO.

Kudos to the FG staff. I had lost hope in this show, but this episode sort of, kinda, partially renewed my faith.:)

The Jetsons sequence was done REAL Hanna-Barbera-ish style!

I liked Brian singing the 1980's Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up" which could have been lyp synched in re-recording by Rick Astley himself.

No 1984 appearance by Mr. Adam West long before he became mayor of Quahog?

Finally: Hope in the 2007-2008 season there's a Family Guy/American Dad crossover episode possibly "Trading Spouses" style.

Daffyfan2003

Was it just me or did this feel like a season 3 episode?

Well, I think that's a good thing. The show has been going a bit downhill this season, so it's good to see something that looks like an earlier episode.

Technically, "Stewie Kills Lois" was supposed to be the season finale, but this is a fahn, fahn replacement.

So does this mean we'll see SKL next season or is this just going to be one of those unaired eps like "When You Wish Upon a Weinstein" which actually did air even before the DVD came out? We might have to wait and see on that.

The best part about the Jetsons cutaway was that it WAS the opening and not a parody drawn in the FG style to save copyright money. The extra cash was worth it.

That's something I was wondering about that too, since they used the real Jetsons instead of the crappy animation used for them in "Brian and Love," I thought they'd just go through the opening the way it really was, so I was pretty shocked to see the banter between George & Jane. Seth must have worked out a heck of a deal with Hanna-Barbera for that one.

Anyway, I remember "Back to the Future" so I really liked this parody. Though one thing I've noticed is that the Griffin kids didn't get too much airtime. They usually at least give Stewie a good subplot, but I guess it would have been hard to do that in this episode. Besides, it's good to see a plot that focuses on Peter and Brian since we haven't seen those in a while. Another good thing was that there was no sign of Herbert. I did like that the Giant Chicken showed up though. I also thought it was funny how Peter kept messing up when he went back to the time Lois asked him to go to the club with her.
PETER: Death.
DEATH: You know what. Just forget it! You're on your own now.

This one ranks up there with other favorite Family Guy epsidoes which I will soon create a list.

Great episode! It was light on the cutaways and heavy on the plot. I think that's what helped the jokes, when they're not so heavily emphasized. Even something like Peter repeatedly going back and Lois saying the same thing about Zapped was funny. It didn't feel long, and Peter had different reactions to it.

The 80's setting worked. I loved the first Chicken encounter and the Rick Astley thing. "Here's a song by a gay man." Seeing the kids Quagmire-like was freaky. I knew they'd do something weird with the ending, I like that Roger showed up.

A'right- THIS is what I'm talking about! One of the best Family Guy episodes- EVER!

'80s Chicken
BTTF parody
Brian pulling Peter away from Cleveland's dance scene
Death
Jetsons

Yeah- they did TONS of Liberal ***-kissing, and tons of Conservative slamming, which was getting old, I won't disagree, but it was a phenomenal episode, nonetheless.

Worth noting another continuity error though- Peter pulls a cutaway, while he's in '84, regarding Hellraiser...yeah, that movie wouldn't be out for another 3 years.

So, about Quagmire- basically, he's a sexaholic to make up for the fact that he can't have the one woman he wants. Interesting.

Neo Ultra Mike
05-22-2007, 12:02 PM
Maybe it was the fact they didn't focus on the full family (and unlike pretty much any other episode I can remember they didn't give Stewie any huge scene stealing bits of dialogue which is good because they aren't too funny for the most part anymore) and the fact that some of the was too focused in the past to do long cutaways but I found this more enjoyable then most FGs. I mean even the morale about Peter realizing he should be happy spending more time with Lois and not try and ditch her to party actually felt more heartfelt and sincere then most FG lessons (even if it is sort just a twist on "Death Lives"). Plus this one had a good set of jokes: Death's appearence, Past Cleveland wanting to high five everywhere, 18 year old Lois getting Brian Hot, the kids infused with Quagmire (I'm glad they kept that as a quick joke instead of extending it and making it unfunny), the new future with Al Gore in charge, The jetsons cutaway (I always did dislike the intro with Jane taking all of george's money so glad to see her in some form get's what coming to her), "Brian I don't know who any of those guys are", Peter blowing his chances with Lois in the past, repeating the dance at the club, bumping into the chicken at the dance (That was the "refrence to past episodes fans will love" Entertainment Weekly mentioned) and the ending with Roger in the Griffin Home. Funnier then his AD appearence but that's for another review. For now good solid ep actually.

I forgot to mention this but 1984 Lois's black swimsuit with black high heels and her jumping off a diving board while Kenny Loggins music is playing is a reference to Caddyshack. Out of all the scenes from that film, I never expect them to do a parody of that.

He first appeared in Brian Sings and Swings. He's based on that one guy in every audience who is overly excited.

It was a great episode, mostly for the Rickroll, but if Seth really wants political commentary on his show, could he at least TRY to make it creative?

I thought the episode when Brian forced Mayor West at gunpoint to make gay marriage legal was the most politically forced episode ever, but then comes Brian's dialogue in this episode which felt as if someone wrote a parody about Family Guy being liberal.

Seth could take a cue from The Simpsons 400th episode, while still being blatant, pulled off their satire more humorously then just "oh, everyone from the Bush administration is dead and Al Gore is god. This is paradise."

The joke was that just because Al Gore is president and everyone from the Bush Administration is dead this was a paradise, it's almost making fun of Liberals that think this would've solved all of America's problems.

That's how I took it as well. It was way too utopian, especially with the jetsns thing, to be taken at face value. Seth has paordied liberals before. He's made fun of clinton just as much as Bush.

Still, the dialogue felt really forced. It would've been a lot more hilarious had they gone with more visual gags based on this joke.

I just watched this episode on Adult Swim and the scene where Brian is getting into a verbal argument with the guy with the big shirt collar, the collar guy asks Brian if he wants to fight. And Brian says sure, meet me on the roof top of the World Trade Towers on September 11, 2001. And the collar guys alright, I'll be there.

I don't remember that being on the original Fox broadcast episode. Was it? And if not, how many edited things on Fox make on to Adult Swim?
