Principal Skinner opens a CTU – Counter Truancy Unit – at Springfield Elementary School with Lisa heading up the operation. Homer is sent on to dispose a container of yogurt so far past its freshness date that it could be toxic, but the reeking yogurt falls into the hands of Dolph, Jimbo and Kearney. With the help of Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian, Bart and Lisa must stop the bullies from releasing the ultimate stink bomb at the school’s bake sale.

So I decided to watch the Simpsons tonight for the first time in a while... and I end up having to see a 24-based episode, despite not being a 24-fan AT ALL. ><
Blah. It was stupid. The only thing I liked was the last bit where Jack stormed in and admitted that he was wasting resources. All the rest of the episode felt like a giant joke that I could never get. Even the non-24 things, because despite not being a fan, I know a lot about the show. It was just... blah.

I don't like 24, so I get the feeling I missed a lot of the fun in this episode. A few good jokes, but overall pretty forgettable. I definitely enjoyed the South Park 24 parody much more.

I've only seen a few episodes of 24, but I still found this ep hilarious.
Great moments:
Jimbo's topless mother
Ralph in the cage
"We're dumpster people now"
Bart using Jimbo's drawings of his house as a guide
Martin's "suicide"
The easy to find deactivation button
Ahmed Adooti
Shelbyville blowing up
"As you're dying, jam the blades with your spine"
That had to be one of the most pointless wastes of a guest star ever.
Well, when they have guest stars play a major role in the episode (such as the Alec Baldwin/Kim Bassinger/Ron Howard episode) people call it a Jump the Shark moment.

I can understand non-24 fans not enjoying this episode, since a lot of the humor in this episode relies on having to be familiar with the show.
With that said, I found the episode to be a hoot, although it's going to be hard deciding where this or the South Park version is the funnier 24 parody.

I'm a 24 fan and I found this funny. Mainly do to the fact that it doesn't try TOO hard or it doesn't try to copy 100% by including the main characters from 24 on the whole 30 minutes of the show.
Instead they made the show more schoolyard innocent. I miss these schoolyard joke and I loved how they incorporated stink bombs for a nuclear. That's so simpson classic and I just saw season 3-4 this past week and this episode did a great job at going back a bit to it's root while continuing it's new standard of being a gag show.

I was actually really disappointed. I think I only laughed once, and that was for the ending. In fact, it was the few surprises - Martin being the mole, Bart's roughhouse interrogation of Nelson, and Jack Bauer pulling all of CTU off of their tasks just to apprehend Bart for his phone prank... with the subsequent nuclear explosion of a part of Shelbyville - that kept me watching. But otherwise, pretty poor '24' parody... I was hoping they'd make more fun of the show. Too bad...

I was pleasantly surprised by this. My sister and I were going "it's gonna suck, but we've got an hour to kill until nine" so we watched it... This was a pretty okay episode. There were a few parts that made me chuckle, and it was nice to see some old-fashioned Bartiness. This really would've been more appropriate for the show's 400th episode than the crapfest that followed.

I don't know much about 24 to know which is greatly parodized or not (although I'm aware of the countdowns, multiple screens over a black background, and whatnot), but overall, I enjoyed it. They really took into account of this parody then any other--everything from the letterings to the drama to Bart's "Get-ready-to-stall-long-enough-to-say-traitor's-name-and-then-get-knocked-unconscious" were a treat to watch.
I didn't care for either Homer and Marge's plot, the show itself weren't funny, and Jack's appearance was predictably minor at best, although I did breath a sigh of relief when he reappeared at the ending so that his first small role wasn't a total complete waste.

Hilarious episode! I'm glad this wasn't the 400th because it was mostly a parody, but the plot was very well done. Even stuff like Marge baking a cake fit into the whole time thing.
A lot of the jokes worked, too. Jimbo's house schematics, Bart's prank call, Martin giving himself a wedgie, the helicopter busting into the gym, etc. I also loved Bart beating on Nelson.
Can anyone help with the bully names? It looks blurred to me, but it looked like:
Corky James Jones
Dolphin Starscan
Kearney Zzyzwicz
Does anybody else wish they'd stop having guest stars play themselves? I guess this is sort of convoluted because the actor played his character, but it's close enough.
I am sick of that, but in this case, I think it worked well.

Ever think that not enough people care about Saturday morning shows enough to bother creating talkback threads for them? Note the hottest talkback threads are always for FOX's Sunday night shows, as well as whenever new South Park episodes are airing. Barring that stuff, the General Animation Forum is usually just filled with list threads and the occasional news item since most of the other animated topics (Disney, Nick, CN, Anime...) have their own subforums.
I expect the General Animation Forum to be pretty quiet for most of the summer, excepting the few weeks in July when everyone will be using the forum to talk about the Simpsons Movie. So aside from that, it's going to be a looooooong summer.

I do feel South Park did a better job spoofing 24, but this wasn't so bad. I mean they did get the credit look, the opening, the scene changes, the scene endings right. Though I really wish they had Kiefer and Mary have bigger roles then just a cameo (I mean really "The Springfield Files" had Gillian and David in for most of an act. If they could of jsut had that it would of been good, espically since this tried more to be a show parody then Files did anyway). The jokes were still very hit and miss though. There were some I liked (Bart being the agent and taking Skinner's car, Jimbo's mom appearing when the boys were making the bomb, Martin as the mole and later his suicide/wedgie attempt, Homer passing Wiggum on the trash can, deactivating the bomb) and moments I didn't (most of the Marge subplot, homer being put in the garbage can with Milhouse, Superindent Chalmers appearing twice (once would of been enough, but don't repeat that joke twice), the way Bart was saved and the ending. Really they should of shown the bullies getting caught not Jack going after Bart like that). So overall a sort of decent ep but really let SP handle the parodies of 24 okay Simpsons team?
The Myst
05-22-2007, 09:29 PM
Superindent Chalmers appearing twice (once would of been enough, but don't repeat that joke twice)
Yeah, that totally violates the rules of comedy. Once is funny, twice is stupid, three times is hilarious. You never do a joke a second time unless you're going to do it again.

This episode was hilarious, especially Martin's fake suicide.
I have a few quick questions though, since I haven't seen most episodes in years past.
Was that the first time Bart ever roughed up Nelson? That was a long time coming.
How long has it been since Bart made a crank phone call? The fact it was Jack Bauer in the middle of a gun fight and not Moe made it especially funny.
Temple Fugate
05-24-2007, 02:02 PM
I've watched the X-Files parody about twenty times. I don't think I'll do the same with this one. Maybe it's my die-hard 24 blood that prevented me from really enjoying this episode, but most of the jokes fell flat. The plot was inspired, mixing the school with the high-octane suspense fest of a terrorist investigation, but the execution of the 24 elements was off just enough to prevent the true spirit of 24 from inhabiting the episode. In the X-Files parody, the mood was set just right. It managed to make itself spooky and funny at the same time. But here, there really didn't seem to be much of the suspense that 24 is known for. Part of the problem I think was the lack of music. 24 relies very much on its score to drive the tension through the slow and the fast scenes. But here, there was no music at all in the slow scenes. Also, while the split screen gags were funny, the splits with the clock in the middle were VERY drawn out. Look at how long they held on one single box where very little was happening, before cutting to something else or displaying the next box? Even The Simpsons has never felt like I'm waiting for the next joke to show up...until now.
I don't like 24, so I get the feeling I missed a lot of the fun in this episode. A few good jokes, but overall pretty forgettable. I definitely enjoyed the South Park 24 parody much more. You didn't miss much, actually. There were some amalgamations of Simpsons and 24 elements but nothing you'd need to have seen 24 to get.
How long has it been since Bart made a crank phone call? The fact it was Jack Bauer in the middle of a gun fight and not Moe made it especially funny. That scene I loved more than anything because it brought me back to the good old days of the series. Plus, Chloe was there to go along with the joke to an extent.
A lot of character moments felt pure and true, and genuinely funny. Wigam shooting at Bart, Homer considering the dumpster a car, etc. But the plotline just seemed to be there for the sake of being there, like select Springfield characters were playing a LARP and the bake sale consumers were just unaffiliated victims not in on the plot.
Overall, it was an ambitious idea that neither was superb nor was it a downright failure. Unfortunately it falls into that gray area in the middle that most Simpsons episodes seem to inhabit these days. I don't know whether to like it for the jokes or like it for its take on the parodied material...because neither were very remarkable.
IMHO, a straight-up Simpsons episode that bunked 24 stylistic elements and just had Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian in guest starring roles probably would have been a safer way to go with this episode, but I give them props for trying.
DarthGonzo
