From IGN:

May 15, 2007 - The next best thing to actually playing Smash Bros. is getting new details on Smash Bros. While we're still going to have to wait some to experience Nintendo-style melee fighting with the Wii classic controller, new info on Smash Bros. Brawl may hit as early as Monday!

Nintendo has updated the official Japanese Smash Bros. (http://www.smashbros.com/) site with a countdown to a site relaunch. As of this writing, the countdown reads 6 days (Japan time).

While we don't know for sure if the site update will include new info, you can bet we'll be refreshing our browsers constantly beginning Monday morning. We'll let you know if anything new is revealed.

I'm pretty dang excited. Only 2 days left!

Monday is also a special Nintendo Gamers' Day.
We should expect several new announcements then.

My guesses/hopes for big announcements on Monday:

-release dates and trailers for Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Brothers Brawl
-complete list of Brawl characters
-trailers for Project HAMMER and Disaster: Day of Crisis
-American release date for Fire Emblem

Sweet! I can't wait!

Just to have a running discussion of sorts...any last predictions?

I've got two characters that I've been reaaallly hoping for: Ike and Isaac. Ike is the easier sell, considering he's the first popular "international" main Fire Emblem character. He's more popular than any of the GBA lords in Japan, so I expect he will be in it. Isaac...obviously a different story. Nintendo might have forgotten about the Golden Sun series by now, especially considering it's been a few years since anything has happened in regards to it. Still, it was popular back in the day.

I'm also hoping for Geno, but who the hell knows about anything in regards to SMRPG. Lucario is all but confirmed, since he's got more than enough popularity, status, and moves to make the cut.

As bizarre as this may sound--and no I am not trying to be a crazed fangirl again but...I truly hope Phoenix Wright is nowhere to be seen in the list. (The fan specualation haunts me even if its bogus...)

Otherwise I'm really excited. Makes Monday something to look foward to for a change.

I do hope that we get an offical annoucement of the release date/roster of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, probably the most anticpated Wii game of 2007 (well perhaps Super Mario Galaxy but if SSBB sells like SSMB then that is going to be the top game for the Wii). I'm sure there are at least a few characters who offically need to be announced (and not jsut the ones that were in SSMB that haven't been mentioned being in Brawl yet) and when to buy it and such.

Well, for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, I really do wish for several characters to make the cut (I won't list Sonic since it seems pretty obvious that the only way the Nintendo people won't have him included is either a big legal battle or brain-damage):

1.) Falco from "Star Fox" - my favorite character to use in SSBM, and if he's here in this one, I'm happy
2.) Firebrand - he's the Capcom red demon character from the "Ghost n' Goblins" video games on NES and from the "Demon's Crest" video game on SNES. I think he acutally could have some interesting moves since he's not a typical humanoid fighter and thus, he would have some unique attacks with his claws and wings
3.) Mega-Man - classic Nintendo icon; how could he not be a canidate?
4.) Simon Belmont from the "Castlevania" series - whip, knife, holy water and boomerang, he could actually be a skilled fighter with good range attacks and with his own arsenal. And he's a vampire slayer, so how can he not rock?

And this last wish would be completely unattainable, having zero-chance of making it but...
5.) A Marvel/DC character - c'mon, Captain America beating the snot out of Bowser and Batman punching Solid Snake? Tell me I'm not the only one! :D

YoshiAngemon
05-20-2007, 06:42 AM
As reasonable as they all sound, if Simon Belmont AND MegaMan make the cut, then maybe along with Pit and Samus, they should put in a Special Exception Character - Kevin Keene, better known as Captain N: The Game Master! And he oughta be an unlockable after a Special Event called "Meet the N Team," where you fight MegaMan, Pit, Simon Belmont, Samus, then Captain N himself! Wouldn't that be a great concept? As for Captain America, though, he'd probably have the Shield Slash, Charging Star, and Stars & Stripes attack.

Actually, instead of Kevin Keene, I could see them adding Little Mac in his place.

While on that note, I'd also like to see King Hippo or (more preferably) Eggplant Wizard as playable characters.

Kind of ironic, since Kevin WAS playing Punch-Out before he got sent to VideoLand. As for Pit, I just hope he can use a Patriot Arrow, even though that would be a long shot!

Sheesh, people. How about some actual Nintendo owned characters? We all know they'll only have 3 3rd party characters, Snake has been confirmed, and Sonic's a sure fire hit, but the third character should be someone who's almost synonymous with Nintendo. I don't know many of those, but maybe it'll be Megaman....

Anyhoo, I want Lucario, Blaziken, and Diddy Kong to be in the game. I also want Ice Climbers, Falco, and Mr. Game and Watch to come back.
And get rid of Pichu.

YoshiAngemon
05-20-2007, 12:18 PM
You'd think that Pichu would work as only a PokéBall Pokémon, who would just use a powerful Spark Attack within a small radius of where it pops up, ala Raikou.

Definitly Lucario. Smash needs another Pokemon full of ownage like Mewtwo. (Huh...Lucario versus Mewtwo? That would be awesome.) And I also agree on not having Pichu in the line up. He took damage for all his electric attacks.:ack:

They are not going to reveal more than 4 characters including various we know were going to make the cut anyway like say Yoshi.

They might have a "new character announcement every 2 weeks until release" like when they randomly announced Fox in the game.

Who do I want?

I love Snake, he just doesn't belong in Smash Bros., but if he is going to be there then have these third party characters that make more sense:
Sonic (Nintendo has been his second home after Sega went third party)
Megaman (mostly known for its success on Nintendo)
Bomberman (ditto)
Bonk (most unlikely but it'd be nice to have him, his been on N consoles and revived popularity thanks to VC but its probably too late)
From Konami I would have liked Simon Belmont or Geomon, either would have made more sense.

If we're opening to third party characters then I hope to see some that make sense, not just having say Snake, thatd be dumb. I am not putting my hopes too much though as I know I'll be dissapointed.

Yeah, you're the only one. I don't want a character with only the most minimal of connections to the realm of video games anywhere near Smash Bros; it would dilute heavily what has, for the most part, been a well-chosen collection of characters. The only other 3rd-partier period I want is Sonic, for that matter.

Channeling a bit of Tony Stark, aren't we? ;) I assure you though that if Cap wasn't in the game but Iron Man WAS, due to many people's anger at how much of a hypocritical jerk Tony's being in the comics, a good number of the players who are Marvel comic readers playing this game would stop fighting each other and having their characters gang up to pummel the holy snot out of Iron-Jerk.

*thinks*

You know, I actually WOULD buy Brawl solely for that aspect now that I think about it. I can see the slogan "Hate Iron Man? He's in Super Smash Bros. Brawl...ready for you to pound the living crap out of! And nothing says the 'effectiveness' of Registration than having one's butt kicked by Princess Peach and Pikachu!" :anime:

Ya know, an Elite Beat Agent/Ouendan Cheer Squad character would be fun. Flashy dance moves.

*thinks* I have to admit, that one's kind of entertaining. It would up the weirdness factor, yes, but it would make this crack-tastic. If not as a player, then as a special move or item you can use in the battlefield like the Nintendogs gimmick. I'll give you that one. :)

Sonic NEEDS to be in this game, especially if someone like Snake makes the cut. Sonic is like the oldest rival mascot there is, and considering that he and Mario are already costarring in that Olympic game, Smash Bros just fits.

Other characters we need:

Simon Belmont/Alucard (Castlevania needs representation)
Midna (I think she has some good possible moves with shadow magic and such)
Elite Beat Agents (have all 3 as the same character, like Ice Climbers)
Megaman (another classic character that needs to show up)
Banjo-Kazooie (I know that Rare owns it, but I can dream)
Cloud (pretty much impossible, but it would be the greatest fan dream ever)

I'm sure that EBA came too late in the development cycle, not to mention that Japan never even got the game, I don't think. I wouldn't discount them as a Nintendogs-like item, but not a full character. I think Midna would be the same, as two Twilight Princess characters would probably be too much.

Hey I just realized something, they never realeased the full roster of characters in SSBM until the game came out.
What are the chances of them doing the same now?
The only thing they'll probably reveal is what controller will be used and who are the next two 3rd party fighters. That, and of course the release date.

Look, I'm as curious as anyone, but a watched pot never boils. Go to the bathroom, have a snack, play video games for a bit, do homework if you're still in school. By the time you look up, the update could be up and you won't have sat here refreshing the thread every 30 seconds.

And if they don't? What happens, honestly?
Here's what WILL happen: Redmond explodes.

See, this is all a cleverly concocted plot by Sony and Microsoft. They sent two secret agents dressed in red sweatshirts with their respective company's logo on it to kidnap the webmaster of Nintendo of Japan's site using a pizza box full of knock-out gas. If said webmaster won't reveal all the secrets before they're released to the public (thus giving Sony and Microsoft adequate time to counter-attack), then something unspeakable will happen.

A Mario doll will be tortured and abused via such methods as electric shocks, putting its head in a vice, and being forced to play Superman 64 for 10 minutes.

Unfortunately, Nintendo's secret spy agents haven't found the suburban basement the Sony & Microsoft representatives took the webmaster to. But just to be safe, they have the Bowser, Yoshi, and Peach dolls under witness protection. The Luigi doll, however, was forgotten by all parties and currently resides in the drawer of some programmer's desk, unprotected.

..and it's just Mario and Link. Some cool screenshots and not much else. Mario's fireball looks pretty cool.

If you look at the shot of Link firing an arrow, he is crouching. I'm not sure if they tweaked the move itself to be like that, or if you can use special moves in different ways while crouching. Either way, it's a start.

I'm still waiting for something really concrete, though.

I'd be willing to turn the other cheek on them just giving us bios for Mario and Link if it weren't for the fact that they didn't bother to include their special moves.

Yes we all pretty much can assume they're no different than the first two games but I'm really curious to know what the heck Mario and Link's new "Super Smashes" are called. Not to mention that if the two Nintendo big wigs don't have bios with special moves, neither will any of the other ones. Meaning I'm going to be left in the dark as to what Metaknight, Pit, ZS Samus, and Wario are capable of (Well we already know Wario's got his fart move and yesterday's new screens showed him doing the Shoulder Barge) for another 6 months.

"Evidence" is a term best classified as "subjective" in this case and most related cases. Just because the Gooey Bomb resembles an item that could have come from a Bomberman game isn't an indicator one way or another of any additional 3rd-partiers on the roster.

Duke

What BCMV22 said.

The flipper from Balloon Fight was in Melee, but the Balloon Fighter himself was abset. They also had the cloaking device and bomb from Perfect Dark (though they didn't say the game in the trophy info) but Joanna Dark wasn't in Melee. Just because the bomb is possible from a Bomberman game, which I don't think it even is, doesn't mean Bomberman made it.

sdp
05-25-2007, 01:23 AM
I don't really see the resemblance of the bomb to Bomberman.

I really want him to be there but the chances are 50/50. Wario Blast is just a modified (japans)Bomberman GB for US audiences because Nintendo didn't feel he was popular enough. It was also a long time ago, so yeah I am not holding too much hope.
As for items from characters not in the game you have to remember GoldenEye/Perfect Dark was from their second party developer so it was ok to have those, having an item from a third party game I would take it as a hint said character is there.

Pacman on the other hand does have a high chance. Namco and Nintendo have been very friendly with each other in the past few years, I'd count it as highly probable.

Except that there's nothing that says the Gooey Bomb owes its origins to a Bomberman game. Someone merely remarked it resembled an item from a past Bomberman game. There is no source that says "The Gooey Bomb hails from the Bomberman series." It is, as has so often been the case with this game, nothing more than rampant speculation, another reason I wish they'd just release the damn thing already; some of this speculation is just painful.

Again, subjective. Speculation =/= fact. You count it as "highly probable," I say I don't want Pac-Man in the game because too many third-party hands will spoil this broth. Neither of us are right and neither of us are strictly wrong.

well like I mentioned on that same post you didn't quote, I don't think its too likely more of a toss up. The item I also think is just a generic bomb, if it was indeed proven to be a bomberman bomb then I would think he was in the game.

So basically I agreed with you on my original post...

I can understand when people want really random characters from third parties. But hell Snake is mostly known because of the Playstation and even the original game was first released on the MSX so any character trully is possible.

Again, subjective. Speculation =/= fact. You count it as "highly probable," I say I don't want Pac-Man in the game because too many third-party hands will spoil this broth. Neither of us are right and neither of us are strictly wrong.Umm..Nintendo and Namco have been working together for the past few years and like mentioned they even have Pacman and friends on both MK arcade games. He would be very likely to appear on the game.

I've posted my opinion on third party characters many times before. I didn't want any, but if Snake is there I want to see some third party characters that actually make more sense and fit SSB perfectly. Megaman, Bomberman, Sonic* all fit perfectly, they are Iconic mascots of gaming and are remembered for their games on NIntendo systems. I also don't want a bunch of third party characters, like I mentioned on this same post if Snake a third party character that doesn't make sense then I want the iconic ones that do.

Would Pacman be based off of his Pacman World incarnations? Those games weren't very good, and I don't think he had that many moves in his arsenal.

Even though he's an icon, his role has diminished over the years. There's better choices for the few 3rd party slots that are open, like Sonic and Megaman above all(or most) else.

And if we're talking Namco characters... maybe a Soul Calibur fighter? Considering Link got into SC2 well... hey, that would be pretty fun of them to return the favor. I know it's totally improbable, but it would be cool. I vote for Nightmare. ;)

Well, the second picture shows a nice graphical touch of a feather falling off Pit's wing. Also you can control where the arrows fire which is also cool imo.

I would have preferred two characters instead of just one, but oh well. : /

Most likely we'll simply learn about the intricacies of things that are already revealed like the Battlefield stage we learned that it changes from day to night, and with Pit we learned that you can aim the trajectory of his arrows.
That doesn't even include new items like the gooey bomb we found about.

It's better than nothing, but it won't be any megaton information. Not until E3 in July most likely.

I thought the screenshots were pretty cool; they actually put thought into the composition of them, it seems like.

Though the update's a lil bittersweet, as I just sold back Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters because it was infuriating. Why can't Nintendo make all that platformers around Mario-level difficulty? 'Cause that I can handle.

Does Pit look a little different to anyone? I'm comparing the official artwork released earlier to the one on his character page. His cheeks got chubbier and his wings are less detailed.
His move set seem pretty cool. But I can't wait to hear more about MetaKnight's.

 I'm not dissing Pit. In fact, I think he'll be an awesome character. It's just that we've already known about him for a year.

The least Sakurai could have done is revealed something new about him. For example, we've known about the twin blades and the curving arrows of light since the first trailer, so maybe he could have divulged something about Pit's other abilities since he obviously has more.

Yeah I fear you might have to get yourself stuck in place until they hit something...

Try to imagine Pit using the Patriot Arrow from Robin Hood: Men in Tights. If it hits himself, he can do a flying tackle to his opponent.

Demonic Raven
05-25-2007, 11:21 PM
I imagine it will be a lot like Link/Young Link's arrows. You can charge them up however long you like, and while you are charging you can hold the control stick in a direction to arc them a certain way. I highly doubt something like Ness's PK Thunder, since Pit doesn't exactly have telekinesis. Once the arrow is shot, you won't have control over it anymore, just like normal arrows.

All of that is speculation, of course.

Dudley

I think how you control the direction of the arrow is similar to Zelda's Din's Fire and Ness's PK Thunder and Cross. After you launch the arrow, you control the movement with control stick and he'll stand in place.
Maybe the arrow will keep moving if the character himself moves, but you won't be able to control it anymore.

Hey, is it just me, or do the characters turn to look at each other when they're about to get attacked?

Dudley

Up B doesn't look like it does any damage. I'd figured his up-B wouldn't act like a third jump, and he could fly in the air like Kirby or Jigglypuff.

Demonic Raven
05-28-2007, 11:02 AM
He could have maybe revealed all four of Pit's moves. Ah, oh well. Guessing time!

Side B: Fire Arrow. Doesn't travel as far or as fast, and can't arc as much, but in turn it is more powerful and leaves a fire effect behind.
Down B: Protective Crystal. Functions similarly to Zelda's B, or maybe Fox's down B. It can reflect projectiles, and do damage to anyone nearby when it's first released. It wears off quickly, though it lasts a little longer than Zelda's move.

Both of them are based off of weapons in Kid Icarus, of course. So it's a viable moveset.

LordTerminal
05-28-2007, 12:57 PM
Personally I think the protective crystal is his Side + B while his Down + B is the harp.

I really don't see the need for seperate update just for moves. They could've just put these attacks up for Pit on Friday when his bio page went up. If they're just gonna refresh us on what we already know first, then I really hope they showcase Metaknight's bio and moves this week. Prefferably, in a single update.

I remember hearing repeatedly that it would be compatible with the GC controller, which is why I saved mine(and to still play GC Games).

It can probably function for the wii controller as well, but although the wii controller is great/acceptable for many things, such as RTS, FPS, and RPGs, as well as some action/platform games, it simply dosen`t have enough buttons for fighters, which is why, IMO, they kept the GC controller.

The Cracker does seem like an interesting weapon type though. Releasing a fireworks like gun at people does seem pretty cool. Is this an original weapon though made for the game or does it come from something specifically. I don't recall anything else having a fireworks gun but I'm not incredibley really well versed on all of Nintendo's game history so I'm not 100% sure. Wonder if we'll be getting any new info on characters though then just weapons. I mean we did get it on Pit but on characters we don't know about. I should've expected them to use Delfino Plaza as a stage from the start but I had trouble picturing how they'd implement it. Simply because you had no problem completing the game doesn't mean it's "easy" either.

So what if it's hard for Terminal? There's probably something you have trouble with that Termnial can beat easily. Video games are funny that way. What's hard for some may not be hard for others.

I'd give you my opinion on the challenge level of Sunshine but honestly I loathed it from the get go. Maybe I could look at it more objectively today now that I'm not so anti-Mario. But the lack of variety in local was a big turn off compared to the variety found in Mario 64.
