View Full Version : Why aren't more video game soundtracks...complete?

I renewed my subscription to Nintendo Power a little while back, and as my free gift, I chose The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Player's Guide/Soundtrack bundle. I already had the player's guide, but I really wanted the soundtrack.
I got the soundtrack in the mail the other day, and boy am I disappointed. It only has a meager seven tracks! The first is some new piece entitled The Legend of Zelda: Orchestra Piece #2, which is followed by Hyrule Field, Ordon Village, Kakariko Village, Death Mountain, Midna's Theme, and Ilia's theme. That's it.
This takes me back to the N64 days. My very first ever video game soundtrack I ever got was "Music from the Greatest Nintendo 64 Games", which was the soundtracks from Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, and Star Fox 64. These soundtracks were COMPLETE. They not only contained every piece of in-game music from each game, but they also contained minor pieces, such as "Game Over" samples, and in the case of Mario Kart 64, voice samples.
Next up, I received the soundtrack for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It had 29 tracks, but was hardly a complete collection of music from the game. Upon doing a quick search online, I learned that the Japanese release of the OoT soundtrack WAS complete. (I most regretted not having the witches' theme.)
Not too long after that, I got the soundtrack for The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. THIS soundtrack is massive! It has 53 tracks spread out over two CD's, and has every piece of music imaginable. And as I said at the start, I just received the Twilight Princess soundtrack, and it's rediculously bare. But I'll bet the Japanese got a full release.
So what gives?

The TP "soundtrack" Nintendo sent out to subscribers is, as you said, hardly a soundtrack at all, although the orchestral version of the Hyrule Field theme is a nice track. My money is on them releasing a full, 2-disc version with all of the musical cuts for a full soundtrack price at some point in the future.

Most full VG soundtracks stay in Japan. I suppose the distributors figure there is no market out here for them.

Where did you get your Majora's Mask soundtrack? I had an opportunity to get one from Nintendo Power, but I procrastinated, and ended up missing my chance. Was that the version you're talking about?
My very first video game soundtrack was for Donkey Kong Country. Then I got the one for the second DKC, and I noticed one was missing.
I also got the Twilight Princess soundtrack from that Nintendo promotion, and was also disappointed that there were just seven tracks from the game.
By the way, if anyone has played all of Final Fantasy X and listened to the soundtrack the put out on CD, is it complete? I have both the soundtrack and the game, but I just haven't taken the time to finish the game itself.
I also thought I'd take the opportunity to ask this while we're on the subject of video game soundtracks. For those of you who buy them, why do you? I know I just get them because I like to collect rare things, and video game soundtracks on CD aren't prevalent here in the states. Back in high school, this one guy laughed at me for having one, and said he wouldn't have wasted his money on it. I guess he doesn't have the knack for collecting rare and weird things like I do anyway.

If the music is good in it's own right I love to listen to it when I'm not playing the game, it's as simple as that. That guy just sounds like an idiot who can't appreciate music that doesn't contain any sort of lyrics.

The US release is not (its a "greatest hits" style compilation like IX's). The Japanese 4-disc version on the other hand is.
Only three FFs have ever had their complete osts released to cd in the US, IV, VI (as "Kefka's Domain"), and VIII. The latter two were only available direct from Square and are very rare.

I've got the VIII soundtrack instock(1 left) (Along with VII, & XII) All $39.99
most people don't like paying 40~50 for a CD, which is why japanese cds are rarely brought over. We don't really stock much other then the FF Soundtracks since their high prices are spread out over 4 discs..

You sell these soundtracks? You did say "we" after all.
Anyway it looks like I'm going to have to look into importing soundtracks if I want the complete versions. Japanese CDs do work on American CD players, right?

Yeah.
Good. Now I'll just have to look for a better paying job and then start looking for soundtracks for games I like to import.

Well thanks for that. Too bad you haven't gotten any video game soundtracks on the site right now though.

Even better.
I think what you got, though I could be mistaken, the domestic version that carries a few tracks. I got soundtracks for Earthbound, Blazing Star, Sonic The Hedgehog, Saga Frontier and Final Fantasies 6, 7, 8 and 10.

So what gives? The Japanese do. And I am sorry a bad thing happened to you. Try looking around for sites that sell game soundtracks. Also I heard a rumor that the grammys may reconize game music as a new catagory.

The only two VGM soundtracks I've ever bought have been Donkey Kong Country (cassette) and Super Mario 64 (CD). I wish they were more commonplace here in the states.

The video games that I own CD soundtracks for are:
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kongs's Double Trouble
Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct Gold
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Star Fox 64
Mortal Kombat 3 & 4 (arcade game, tracks from both games are on the CD)
Super Mario 64
Final Fantasy X
Then there's this CD with select tracks from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, F-Zero, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run, and Star Fox.
Another one has select tracks from Killer Instinct Gold, Wave Race, Star Fox 64, Blast Corps, and Super Mario 64. Believe it or not though, of the two Star Fox 64 tracks it has, none of them made the final cut. One of them is more or less a remix of the track from the original Star Fox's Corneria stage, and the other is supposed to be from a "Black Hole" stage, and just consists of slick guitar riffs.
The ones on my list that are complete are DKC, DKC3, Killer Instinct Gold, MK3 & 4, Super Mario 64, and I believe the one for Star Fox 64 is more or less complete.

Honestly, I don't remember. I must've been living in Nevada at the time. I don't believe I've ever gone to a music store and picked up a videogame CD, so I must've gotten it through Nintendo Power, either through a subscription renewal, or I ordered it from their store.

You went from living in Nevada to living in Queens, NY? Interesting.
I'm thinking you might not have gotten it from Nintendo Power though, since you say it spanned two discs.

Well here's a thought that I didn't get out in the open sooner, but I'll do it now. I'd just rather pay more for complete soundtrack than pay anything for an incomplete one. You do get what you pay for after all, right?

I agree, which is why we don't stock the American FFXII OST, its only like one disc.

Actually, I went from Queens to Las Vegas and then back to Queens again. Stayed in Vegas for seven years.
I'll take pics of the CD's and post them later.

It looks like you got that from Nintendo themselves. Maybe from those catalogs they used to offer with NP issues. It seems complete, and now I'm really kicking myself for not taking advantage of that offer.
