Need help in re-sizing Avator

Ok, I admit it. I stink at all things computer and computer related. I found a Tom and Jerry pic I wanna use as an avator but I've gotta resize it. Here it is...

Now, could somebody help me and resize this thing so it's an acceptable avator for these forums? Perhaps even explain to me how resizing works?

When this generous person resizes the image, could they mainly just box off the colored Tom's head. That's really all I want. Thanks.

I'm not sure. But in the original picture this is from there's a pencil drawing next to it of Tom in the same pose.
