View Full Version : Batman blasted

I was watched Paradise Lost part 2 for the first time today and I noticed that Batman and Marsion Manhunter were hit by part of an intense flame. Now I know that MM can probably handle it and I know that Batman's suit is flameproof but I don't think that it's that flameproof any thoughts. It seems like some of the JL in that episode should of died even with their powers. If Timm wants all of JL's members to live that's fine. I want them to live too but a little more realism would be appreciated. Their only heroes and not invisible if they were invisible there wouldn't be any threat.

Actually Batman should be able to handle an intense blast of heat better than MM. Martian Manhunter has a weakness toward fire. Secondly neither Batman or MM was actually immersed in fire. Rather the fireball exploded behind them.

The thing that bugged me about his episode was the poor use of their powers. This has been pointed out before in other episodes - where a memebr of the team could have very easily solved a problem with their powers, but doesn't - presumably so the writers can extend the scene out longer or solve the problem in another way. In this episode, there's a scene where a bunch of the team are grabbed by vines growing out of the ground - and one of those that's captured is MM. Why in the world didn't he just phase himself free? Instead he sits there flailing his arms about like a helpless rag doll. Ugh.

I wondered about that too. Maybe because he wasn't prepared to phase and he can't phase on command?
Bah, I doubt it...lol.

I tried to tell myself it had something to do with an inability to concentrate while being attacked by the vines, but I did have a little problem with that too.

This is sort of on topic, but I'm not fond of MM's lack of weakness to fire. In the comics it is almost a defining element, yet it's not really addressed on the show. There's hasn't been a scene that outright showed MM having a weakness towards flame. I'd like to see that...

The fire thing bugs me, too. Remember when MM slammed Lord Hades into the ground? Hes come out a second latter with fire shooing out of the hole and he doesn't even flinch.

That is true.
I kept thinking the Flash had a sword in his hand, couldn't he just spin around like a top and act like buzzsaw? I saw the vines and knew it was his time to shine, opps maybe next time. For someone with super speed, his reflexes suck!

I've come to believe that when J'onn is in intense pain, like the time he was being "probed" by Imperium, he's unable to concentrate enough to use his special abilities. Now those vines may not have caused intense pain, but Faust created them with magic, which probably made it tougher for J'onn to do anything.

If they decided to tone down J'onn's powers, maybe they decided to just tone down or entirely eliminate the fire weakness too. Though he did seem to get really weak when the snake in Paradise Lost Pt. 1 shot fire at him.

It's not a weakness to fire. Not like Superman's weakness to Kryptonite. I think he's scared of it, and, like anyone else, it can hurt him, but it's not only fire that can hurt J'onnl. When J'onn was hit with a laser during SECRET ORIGINS, he was stunned, much like when the snake blasted him. Same for the depth charges. I'd like them to show that fire at least BLUNTS his powers.

Possibly, but:
1) Why would magic make it more difficult to use his poweres?
2) If this were the case, the writers should have made this clear at some point, instead of making people guess at what his powers are and aren't.
3) It still doesn't explain the other occurrences where he could have used his abilities and didn't. For example, the time he could have stopped Deadpool with his phasing ability.
I think its just weak writing.
