There's no skill involved
Yes there is. If you're not good with probability, you'll most likely fail hard.

and Mandel is annoying as heck.

Nt rly.

The only way to watch this show is to record it on dvr or vhs. Way too many commercials and lag times to build "suspense". When my wife & I watch it on dvr. It takes us 20 minutes. Much more enjoyable that way.

I kind of like Deal or No Deal. It's good if you do know Probability.. but I think what kills the show for me are all those "Suspense Moments' where they cut away just as someone is about to decide to stop or go on..

Also if anyone wants to get on the show, you might want to bail out when you get an offer of 1/8th the Highest figure on the board..too many people act stupid and get too greedy I feel IMHO

but I say the show is average.

Its absolute crap. There's no skill involved and Mandel is annoying as heck.Dalek took the words right out of my mouth. There isn't any skill required, it's hardly entertaining, the contestants are always extremely annoying, and Mandel is creepy and annoying. Really bad show, in my opinion. I refuse to watch it.

The suspense moments definitely hurt the show. When television makes pathetically blatant attempts to grab my strings and hook me over the commercial break/period between two episodes, I feel the natural urge to resist. When dramas do it, I'm emotionally involved with the characters and their situation. When idiots, ditzes and morons try to win cash based on chance, I don't really care.

Furthermore, the introduction of the family and friends always bores me. I don't care who they are, I don't care if they are loving their 15 minutes of television exposure. I watch DoND to see people make and lose money. Get on with it.

My favorite moment in DoND history was last fall when one of the contestants jumped Howie's cliffhanger routine.

Contestant: Um...number 14. (Or whatever it was. I don't remember.)
Howie: You want number 14? Well, we're going to find out what's in number 14...
Contestant: Say it, Howie.
Howie: Say what?
Contestant: You know what.
Howie: YOU say it.
Contestant: We'll find out after--
Howie: LOUDER!
Contestant: We'll find out after these messages!
Howie: Yes we will!

Finally one of the contestants decided not to take his crap. It was glorious.

I concur. I've seen it a couple of times, and I couldn't stand it. There's just no real point to it, and it's so annoying.

I prefer my game shows with some skill involved.

I don't watch it every night, but I enjoy watching it on occasion. The thing I can't stand is the model peaking at the amount!! Don't stall, woman!!! Show me what's in the case!!!!

When will someone go all the way with the chosen case and win the $1,000,000 inside?

I don't think Howie is annoying...at least not as much as Julie Snyder ><

Anyway I don't mind watching it when it's on, but I'm not gonna anticipate the next episode feverly and stuff... I don't even know the schedule. I flip around the channel and end up on it and I'll watch it. OTherwise I don't care.

I think when you have to Look at Deal or No Deal, the Real issue is when some of those contestants have what i like to Call "Brainfreeze Moments." I'll give an example here:

In one episode a Woman was on the show and in fact her and her husband were Motorcycle enthusiasts, and her husband was over in the Middle east on Duty (He's a Marine).

So after 3 or so rounds in which she played Rather well, Howie and the Banker decided with the help of Jay Leno to Sweeten the deal. The Banker offered the Woman just 99,000 bucks, and Leno threw in a Harley Davidson 'Wide Glide' Bike, Just the Dream bike the woman wanted. So what does she do?

No Deal.. I was really ticked at the woman for giving up her Dream ride here..

So after another good round where she opened a few more low value cases, the Banker offers her 112,000 bucks.... as I sat there My own mind was saying "Take the Deal you twit!"

but again no deal...

Yet another round, another good run... and this time she was offered $121,000. I'm thinking.. God if she says No Deal this time, she's really stupid...

Apparently she was.. Of course at this time her Husband was on via satellite and he was telling her to "Deal" all the time... Yet this woman decided to have a "Brainfreeze" and refuse every iota of cash she was offered up to that point, and she still turned it down.. I mean it's like waving a free check to buy her and her husband 2 Wide Glides (Which Cost 36 Grand) and she would have still had cash left over..

But like I said, she had a brainfreeze and decided to say no deal...

Finally luck and probability was against her..she had to finally settle for 29,000.

The Point is this.. If you ever did become a contestant on this show. If the banker offers you a six digit figure of cash, Take it..

Then I remember the one where this guy who was a rodeo clown got up there and did a great job... in fact His fiancee was there.. and just before one no Deal call he proposed Marriage with a diamond Ring (That's romantic!) but in the end this guy actually didn't end up losing... He actually walked out with a 301,000 Dollar check, and a New fiancee.. All for the cost of giving up his 75 dollar case..

So you see folks.. Don't ever get greedy like Contestant 1, be more conservative and know when to get out, Believe me, you'll be happy to come out of there with Something rather then nothing whatsoever...

I really like Deal or No Deal. Yeah, it's mostly chance, but I think that makes it more fun; no one knows what's going happen. And it's interesting to watch people transform into really greedy people as the offers continue to go up. I also really like Howie. I think he's great and does well as host.

And it's neat some of the things they do for people. Like bringing families to the taping when they rarely get to see each other. One episode they decorated the set for a girl who had never gone to her prom.

My absolute favorite episode had to be the one where the guy whose parents had immigrated to America with $750. He ended up with three cases in play and they were $750, $7,500, and $750,000. He took a deal for $200-some thousand, but in his case was the $750. What are the chances? It was so crazy.

my mantra for that game is jump out when cases containing higher amounts < cases you have to open

Then there was the game with the woman who loved to have almost everything she owned be lime green. For her game, Howie wore a green shirt, the models wore green dresses, they turned the set lighting to a green motif.

This woman was either still in school or just finished and had very little money to her name. She kept playing and got to the point where the banker offered a tricked-out lime-green SUV. She took the deal.

Here's the post-script. She got the SUV but didn't have enough money to pay the taxes on it.

So she had to sell it -- and pay the taxes anyhow.

I personally liked that one, too, if not because the contestant and his family relates to everything my parents had to go through (Also Korean immigrants who had some $700+ bucks on their way to America).

As for the show in general, I don't obsess over it nor do I watch it religiously, I usually watch it if I feel the need to, mostly if there's nothing else on TV. The show is fine, except for the whole suitcase dealie when the models build suspense by not revealing it's content till like ten seconds later. I never liked that. It's far more annoying to me then it is suspensful.

my mantra for that game is jump out when cases containing higher amounts < cases you have to openThe only caveat to "The Formula" (which is commonly held) is a situation that just played out this Monday night when the tennis player had the "Big 7" amounts in play for a long time.

She gets to six cases left, and they are:
- $75
- $50,000
- $100,000
- $200,000
- $500,000
- $1,000,000

with an offer of $239,000.

So, the Formula holds for a "No Deal" decision.

Then she opens the Million. Offer drops to $98,000 -- but the Formula still holds.

Then she opens $75. Offer balloons to $188,000. To me, $188K is essentially the same as $200K when it comes to "The Formula." I would have dealt here. But technically, the Formula still holds for No Deal.

Then she hits the land mine -- $500,000. Offer goes to $88,000 with $100K and $200K still on the board. But again, the Formula holds.

Then $200,000 is opened. That leaves 50K and 100K with a better-than-mean offer of 83,000, which she takes.

So you see, her sequence of circumstances kept the Formula intact despite the decreasing payoff.

what peeves me is that this drek has made it over to CNBC, i come home to watch Mad Money, On The Money, and Fast Money...but then I scurry to change the channel before 9pm. i wish conan o'brien reruns still ran on cnbc. that'd be great at 9pm.

i miss Press Your Luck. nothing like watching contestants getting burn'd by Whammies. i saw a new version on the game show network once (a friend had dig. cable)

but now the new horror is BINGO on ABC(?)
btw, i'm not excluding Idol, Survivor, of Dancing from the "horror" ranks, i still loathe these programs as well as big brother (cancelled yet???) and amazing race...and apprentice...and the whole genre for that matter.
