Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly Toon Zone sketch! Every week, John Delaney will draw up a new picture based on the results of the poll above. That means that *we* fans choose what the picture will be! The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE ! Delaney will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be DC characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Sound good? You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.

So...let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

P.S. Send more requests!!!!!

I have been enjoying all of John Delany's sketches so far. But why are we only limiting this stuff to one hero. What about the JLA , X-Men, JSA , Avengers, Young Justice , Fantastic Four or something like that?

Robin? People actually want to see Robin? What is that? Just goes to show that the Bat characters always get votes.... ::sigh:: Oh well...

I'm torn. I want a Darkseid sketch so bad, but Kara would be cool too, and Silver Surfer would be awesome as well. I think I'll probably end up voting for Darkseid, but let's see Silver Surfer next week too!

Go Darkseid! I would love to see this character win. I can only imagine what twisted imagery that Jpohn would come up with. :) And Randy H, there is nothing wrong with a Batman fan voting for a Batman character - especially in the Tim Drake Robin happens to be his favoriote character.

I voted for Robin this time around - I say we need to get through the Bat-team first, then do other characters!

I love the avatar idea! Now if we could just get him do me a Clayface drawing that I could use.....

Darkseid scrolls through the thread entitled John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #6.

Darkseid: "This is most troubling. Hmm ... when the uprising comes, Jim Harvey will be spared."

Darkseid opens Microsoft Word and starts typing a letter.

Dear Orion,

How are you? I am fine. Congratulations on your two votes in last week's poll. They were epic. My son Kalibak got zero votes in poll #4.

Kalibak: "Father, tell him that Jimmy Olsen also got zero votes in my poll, it was a tie."

I don't think I have to remind you that this has been one of the bloodiest battles I have yet faced. My campaign to conquer votes each week has proved progressively fruitful, but insufficient. I plan to make this poll a turning point.

Kalibak: "Orion lost his poll too. He was even beat out by someone called Scarlet Witch. Sounds made up to me, father."

I will not let my visage go ignored in favor of perky superbreasts, only to turn up unexpectedly in a future sketch, being striken by some second-rate hero. I am a GOD. This endeavor has already taken up enough of my efforts. Time on my hands could be time spent with you. But I guess that's why they call it the blues.

Kalibak: "Did you hear me? Beat out by a made-up character, father. Father, observe my new slaying maneuver. This is going to knock Orion on his rear. Watch. It's the same move I used on Jimmy Olsen. Watch. Hey, come on, watch this!"

I grow increasingly more aggravated with Kalibak every day, and I have given the readers of Toonzone an ultimatum: Elect me as John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #6 or I will take the life of Kalibak.

Kalibak: "(falls on ground) FATHER! DID YOU SEE ME??"

But just between you and me, I'm going to kill him no matter what.

Love, Darkseid

Man I'm torn. I want to the the perky breasted Supergirl, but then again I want to appease the almighty Darkseid, but at the same time I was the one who suggested TMNT. Talk about your moral dilemma. :p

I voted for the Turtles because the new series should premiere next year and will adopt a "Batman Beyond"-esque style, so I was hoping to see how'd they look in that style.

BTW, if Tim Drake wins, could the style be closer to that of the "Static Shock!" appearance? I just would like to see an older Tim, rather than a young one.

C'mon everybody - vote for Aztek er....I mean Darkseid! :)

Here's a couple of good reasons why:

1) Darkseid is great with children of all ages - on Apokolypis all the small children want to grow up and be just like him.

2) Darkseid will cure world hunger and homelessness by offering out jobs to everyone - no one will every be left out!

3) Darkseid could take care of tax reform policies, terrorists and politicians all at once!

4) Darkseid has appeared with such fanfavorites as Superman and Lex Luther - even offering to do photo appearances with your favorite hero or villain.

5) Darkseid offers everyone a home - even the outcasts. Just look and see how happy Doomsday is now!

6) Darkseid can wear a Superman t-shirt and skirt just as well as anyone - just ask him!

7) Darkseid is..........

Actually, I didn't really prefer the "older" Tim Drake to the "younger". All they did was give him an actually nose rather than the anime-esque/Micheal Jackson "point" he used to have. I thought the Batman characters seen on Static Shock looked more like Levin's animated take on them, and I much prefer the more TNBA look. Wow...I actually prefer TNBA's style to something else! Just joshing here, TNBA wasn't aweful at all, but if I had to choose between TNBA Tim and Static Tim or Levin's Tim...TNBA gets the vote...

Hey Randy
Thanks for mentioning the Superman vs Lobo one shot I did. It's my all-time favorite book I've done in the animated style(Mike Manley inks & Stu Chaifetz colors rock), followed closely by JLAdvs.#3 and Adventures in the DCU annual with Dr. Fate (and John Byrne inks!).
If you like my stuff, and you haven't seen Supes/ Lobo try and pick one up. David Micheline (Superman, Spiderman) wrote it and it's a very cool story.
Self-promotingly yours ;)

John,

I have to admit that somebody else mentioned the book first and reminded me that you had done the pencils. I can't remember where it was though...... I have to say that Supes vs. Lobo is one of my favorite Adventures issues. Always on model (aside from the Lobo/Supes scale issue), and great Superman panels. I'd put that issue right next to Min S. Ku's pencils on Superman Adventures #43, and probably even higher. For some reason most of the adventures artists try to make the art more comic-like, which only tends to distract from the cool designs. You maintain a great balance between minor added details and staying on model...

Hey Randy
Thanks2 for the comments. I deliberately drew Lobo quite a bit bigger in size than Supes and bigger than he appeared in "the Main Man" just because I liked the contrast better. When they were standing together it just "felt" better to have Lobo looking really big bully-like next to the always honorable man of steel.
Just a personal preference thing.

Hi DB
Just to clear up a little confusion.
I drew every issue of Adventures in the DCUniverse (Steve Vance wrote them) including the WonderWoman vs Cheetah (#3) and I drew JLAdventures #3. You're right I love drawing WW, and although I think the current JL design is awesome I liked drawing her in Adventures because I got to come up with my own WW design based on the animated style. I thickened up her eyebrows and slightly lengthened her nose to give her more of a Greek look. I also borrowed a page out of Alex Ross' book and gave her the bird design incorporated into the WW on her chest.
Glad you liked it

Hi Randy
I'm currently drawing alot of Scooby Doo, Dexter's Laboratory and Futurama for Bongo comics. But yeah I sure do hop around a lot, which is okay with me it always keeps me working, although I am getting anxious to draw something more realistic and not in a cartoony style.
Also thanks for the compliment on the splash page in Supes/Lobo, I liked that one too.

I've actually had to stop reading them while I'm in a bookstore, because I'll laugh out loud, and I don't want people thinking if insane(well any more than I already am :p) The evil robot santa claus and the millionaire parody were great. Dramatic shafts of light intermingle with the mysterious darkness of the Batcave. In the distance, rain trickles echoingly through the cracks as hundreds of bats flap their wings and click their teeth. The steady clicking is accompanied by a metallic hum.

The hum grows louder as the small numbered circles of light above the elevator doors count down.

5...CLICK...4...CLICK...3...CLICK...2...CLICK...1

The doors open.

Kalibak: "So then the Invisible Man says, 'I don't know, but my hindquarters are killing me!'"
Darkseid: "(stares at Kalibak)"
Kalibak: "Get it, father? Hahahaha!"
Darkseid: "Wait in the elevator and try not to say more things."

Darkseid walks down the trepidacious stone steps and sits at the console of the Batcomputer.

Darkseid: "If this doesn't hold the key to destroying my John Delaney poll competitors, nothing will."
Kalibak: "Trust me, father. Batman is just a mortal man. This computer is what gives him power."
Darkseid: "I don't see a mouse."
Kalibak: "It must not have one."
Darkseid: "Nonsense."

Darkseid types in "SUPERGIRL." Nothing happens. Darkseid types in "ACCESS SUPERGIRL." Nothing happens. "FIND SUPERGIRL." Nothing. "SUPERGIRL NOW." "PLEASE SUPERGIRL." "SUPERGIRL FOR THE LOVE OF GOD."

Darkseid: "This isn't working."
Kalibak: "Tell it to give you information about Supergirl."
Darkseid: "That's what I'm doing. It must be security-protected."
Kalibak: "No, tell it with your mouth."
Darkseid: "What?"
Kalibak: "Computer, give me information about Supergirl."

The screen fills with newspaper articles and profile documents about Supergirl.

Darkseid: "Go play with something. Computer, what are Supergirl's weaknesses?"
Batcomputer: "Supergirl displays comparable atmospheric tolerances to Superman. She is vulnerable to kryptonite and is weakened by radiation from the red sun of Krypton."
Darkseid: "Computer, how can I beat Supergirl in a sketch competition?"
Batcomputer: "This request does not compute."
Darkseid: "Now see here, you bucket of bolts. You will hand this victory to me on a silver platter."
Batcomputer: "Would you like to analyze a sample of hair or dirt?"
Darkseid: "(pounds keyboard, never once hitting a button that does something) You will give me information or face my wrath!"

Kalibak wanders through Batman's gallery of crime souvenirs.

Kalibak: "If I can't win father's approval with feats of strength, I will do it with detective skills. And if I was Batman, I would hide my information behind this patriotic monument."

Kalibak stands before the giant Two-Face penny. He grabs the bottom and strains to lift it. Finally, it starts to give and he raises it off the ground. Losing his balance, Kalibak throws it off to the side, crushing Batman's giant dinosaur. There is a lot of smoke and some fire. Kalibak observes the wall behind the penny and finds nothing.

Kalibak: "No... NO! It can't be!"
Darkseid: "KALIBAK! Go kill yourself. As for you, computer, there's no use resisting. For you see, I'm already assured you know how to win this competition."
Batcomputer: "This request does not compute."
Darkseid: "Don't give me that! Batman was the first winner of the John Delaney Sketch of the Week contest!"
Batcomputer: "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #6. Supergirl - Kara - S:TAS leads with 23 votes. Darkseid and Robin - Tim Drake are tied for second with 20."
Darkseid: "(grabs nearby operation table and throws it through the computer screen) Ahh... this isn't working. Kalibak."

Darkseid turns around. Kalibak is standing there with the Scarface dummy in one hand and its severed head in the other. He has tears in his eyes.

Darkseid: "We're going."

Darkseid and Kalibak solemnly make their way up the steps to the elevator. On their way, they pass Batman and Robin, who are standing quietly with their arms crossed. Darkseid sees Batman and approaches him.

Darkseid: "Fatherhood is having to make victories out of ..."

Darkseid looks down at Robin and back up at Batman. Kalibak wipes away his tears, never dropping the Scarface dummy or its head.

Darkseid: "... tragedies."

Batman and Robin watch as Darkseid and Kalibak enter the elevator and rise out of the Batcave.

Somewhere else, in another galaxy, loud rock music echoes in the ears of an unconscious Silver Surfer. Groggily, he comes to. He is tied up and gagged, on the floor of a basement. He sees a large figure in the dark, trying out a very big taser.

Lobo: "Hey, good to have you here. It's time to play pin the tail on the donkey."

Maybe since Darkseid, Tim & Kara (who's in the lead at the moment, GO KARA!! :D ) are so close well get a sketch of Supergirl and Robin vs. Darkseid. Since John was already kind enough to set a precedent for three characters in one week. ;)

Thanks for the feedback dudes.

I think everyone should vote for Darkseid because it would be a perfect ending to the Darkseid saga while this nutty little interstellar ruler still has some dignity to his name.

Drawing Darkseid would give John a chance to really show off his skills. Besides, we saw Superman and Nightwing last week. Supergirl and Robin are pretty much the same thing, only smaller (and it's not like they'll have trouble winning future polls).

Now let's get it on.

Look like it may be another tie week. The almighty Darkseid has 22, the perky breasted Supergirl has 23, and the boy wonder Robin has 20, and there's a little under 7 hours to vote. What surprised me the most was that TMNT got 11 votes. I suggested that just to appease me, but I didn't think it would get that many votes. Who knows, maybe in next weeks poll the awesome foursome could win :D

Hmmm.....ok. I'm currently using my latent powers of telepathy to read Johns mind.

Give me a sec - I can sense that John is stooked about getting a chance to draw Darkseid. There's also something about hoping to prevent a spandex fate for a certain super-heroine. Oh and there's one more thing - yeah John says he will accept bribes of pie. Everybody loves pie. :D

Ace,

I just realized that myself about an hour ago.... Then again, one could argue that Supergirl's skirt is spandex..... It does seem to be that kind of material (i.e. the rubbery blue highlights the skirt shows when on Apokolips), but it could go either way, I guess.

So just out of curiosity are the characters that are drawn in John's fine sketches but didn't win the vote (like the Joker, and Penguin, and Doc Ock and possibly Supergirl) still eligible for future polls?

I don't think the included characters are eligible. Both Joker and Penguin have disappeared from the polls after having been included. I think Jim and Harley said something about this, but I can't remember for sure....

Just for the record, I, like Penguin, prefer to see Supergirl in her own sketch next week...

James Harvey

Unless John draws a bonus sketch of a character, only the winner of the poll will no longer be in the poll. If John draws a bonus pic of Supergirl, then she no longer be featured in the poll. The characters that are included in the pic (ie: Penguin in the Nightwing pic) can still be voted on in future polls. Why? Becuase they didn't win the vote or are featured in their own pic. This means the Joker can show up on the poll again, or Doc Ock, Penguin, etc...

Also, that's why I wait until the picture is drawn before I add to the 'retired' list of sketched characters.

I thought John included the Joker in the first sketch so that he wouldn't dominate the poll the next week.

I’d like some clarification on this from John, DG, or Harley.
