View Full Version : Singers turned Actors....what gives?

First it was N*Synce, then Mariah Carrey, then Britany Spears, and now Mandy Moore. Why is it that singers nowadays assume that just because they can sing (or think they can), that they must be able to act too? They're killing the acting business, they're a bunch of wannabes. Granted, it seems that they do it because it makes a pretty good amount of money...Elvis did it, so did Bing Crosby and Sinatra. But still, the singers should stay where they are and not hop around trying everything and thinking that they're great at everything just because they're popular. Am I the only one that thinks this?

Singers to actors has been common ever since there has been theater and a stage. History is rich with examples of actors turned singers and vice versa. Why is it such a surprise now?

Hey, if they can do it, what's the problem? Movies aren't necessarily ruined for me if they feature a musician in an acting role. And if they suck at acting, don't blame them, blame the casting directors and producers who told them they were good.

Oh, and I don't think any of them have assumed they can act just because they can sing. Even musicians can make the distinction.

I totally agree with you, Terminatah. I only dislike a musician stared film if the musicians suck at acting, because if the star is a bad actor, the director/producer/writer all must be total yutzes to allow it. Of course this is just my opinion. I could be wrong.

It's a pretty good opinion Polisher. I dunno, maybe it was just seeing Britany Spears up on the big screen that has weirded me out. Lol, or maybe it's the fact that I am an actor, and it just doesn't seem right to see people with no acting experience do a movie. Then again, movies are about making money, and a great way to make money is to take the most popular singer at the moment and stick them in a movie so that all the fans of the singer will go pay money over and over again to see their fav singer on the big screen. What constitutes a musician? I would think it was someone who played an instrument, and yes, your voice is a type of instrument....but it just seems that the term musician is used for people who actually play instruments. Eh, maybe it's me...

What freaks me out is actors turned singers/rockstars/popstars etc. IMHO, just because you're a big actor doesn't mean you're gonna sell a record! Jennifer Lopez just got lucky:p

Sometimes they were unknown singers before becoming actors. So all we know them as are actors, but their true passion is music. If they suddenly got popular as singers would you think it was weird then?

Examples are Jack Black, the girl that plays Meadow Soprano and the guy that plays Uncle Junior Soprano.

A musician is any kind of musical performer, either instrumental or vocal. I can't stand people who claim singers aren't musicians. It's all music, baby.

the greatest celebrity to become a 'singer' was Shaq becoming a rap artist, that was a classic never to be forgotten.

For sure, Sinatra was one of the few who I liked singing and acting, and the same goes for Bing Crosby. Even Elvis was sorta good...but they always stuck him in roles that he didn't want. And yes, singers are muscians too, I'm just so use to using for people who play instruments that it's feels weird to use when concerning a singer. Maybe it's because I do play three instruments and since about 6th grade to 12th I've always associated people who play instruments as muscians, and people who use their voice as singers....or maybe it's just cause our choir sucks, and I don't like to associate them with muscians, because then they would be associated with us? ;) that actually does make sens now that I think about it,lol. Anyhoo, it is also a good point that some actors were unknown singers first, or visa versa, and that when we see them switching around and think they're just now doing, it's not true.

And heh, Sammy Davis Jr. could act, ever watch the episode of him on All in the Family or The Jeffersons? :D

If they can act, fine, but lately, they CAN'T. Just because they're in a video they immediatly think they're the best actors out there. Why do they try to act when they can't even sing? 1. Agent, 2. Fame, 3. Digital Works, 4. They think a 2-4 minute music video is about the same even though all they do is mouth the words to a soundtrack, and 5. People encourage it.

It's not just "nowadays." The Beatles were in movies back in the 60s.

The Monkees were originally just a TV show, but then they learned to actually play their instruments!

Examples:

-Joan Jett (who did a great dramatic acting job in "Light Of Day")
-Pat Benatar (was in a film noir type movie around the end of the 70s/beginning of the 80s. She did some good work from what I've heard)
-Dee Snider ("Strangeland" has its fans)
-Ice-T (Great performance in "New Jack City"...too bad his talents are being wasted on DTV movies)

I've got a whole slew of 80s artists (and a few 90s performers) in my movie's dream cast. Don't worry...I write simple, to-the-point and with strong language. Also, a lot of their roles will involve performing songs (I'm also hoping to get regular actors to sing in my movie as well).

Sincerely,

John "Captain Caps" Kilduff
