Subbed Vs. Dubbed?

Well, I prefer to see any movie in the language it was originally made in. I think dubbing can seriously cheapen a production and give it a horribly campy feel. Even good dub jobs like the one on Princess Mononoke leave a lot to be desired.
Live action dubbing is much, much worse however...
I was lucky enough recently to see several Godzilla movies in their original Japanese and there's a world of difference.

I don't have a preference on this. If the dub was done well, I'll watch it. And now that most anime DVDs are being released bilingual, I can watch both versions!

However, in some cases, such as older anime and fansubs, you can only get the anime you like subtitled. In this case, I find that I enjoy watching the show if the subtitles are easy to read, don't go by too quickly, and the grammar is good - I hate it when you watch an anime and find a ton of spelling errors in the subtitles.

As for the voices, it's all a matter of preference. I happen to watch alot of fansubs, so I'm used to hearing the Japanese voices when I watch anime. But like I said earlier, if a dub job was done well, I'll watch that, too.

If I knew Japanese, then raw would be the best way to see it. I prefer Subs, I can read subtitles quite well, and I think it's more fun when you see it in it's own language. But, it's only really good when you have good translations, some subs have really bad translated subtitles. I have a lot of friends who don't like dubs, but I like them alot. It is enjoyable to see a cartoon in your own language and not have to worry about reading subtitles. But, the problem with dubs is that a lot of times that feeling or mood that is suppose to be conveyed is lost when said in japanese to english. Also, dubs tend to be edited alot. You could watch the same show in japanese, and then in english, and in one version you may love a certain characters, but in another you absolutely hate that character- it all depends on teh voice actor and how they portray the character. All in all, what's ever available at the moment, subbed or dubbed, works for me!

Personally, I prefer subs over dubs. This doesn't mean that I condemn dubs, it just means I like it in its original form better. In the case of a bad dub, in the long haul it's much easier on the ears. If it's a good dub, then I'll watch it more often. I just like to hear the original actors, who, more often than not, put a lot more emotion and feeling into their roles.

Really, I prefer Dubbed, mainly because I like to draw, sometimes, while I watch, or do other things. That way I can at least hear whats going on, & be able to look up when I know there's something visually cool. But when I sit down I just tune into it, I think I'd prefer the subtitled anime. Depending on whether or not the subs are visible.(I had a fansub, advanced copy of Utena, right when it came out in Japan. It was a little hard to read, but I got through it)

DVD, so I can turn on the original Japanese subs while still listening to the English dialouge. That way, you don't always have to read the subs, but for... uhh..."Questionably Translated" dubs *cough, DBZ, cough*, you can see how the dub was changed.

I saw the toonami Tenchi before a friend lent me the uncut-sub of the series. While I felt the show was a heckova lot better uncut & subbed...I really hated 'grandpa'. Maybe its just first impressions..but I liked his american voice better.

I think i am oen fo teh few people whol prefer dubbed... I just odnt like subbed because i dont like reading the subtittles at the bottom it distracts you from whats going on... plus the japaneese voices just make me laugh too much......

Depends. I am mainly for dubbed. I miss what is going on by spending too much time reading the subtitles. But if the dubbed is cheap, (Like substituting important words or pharses with cheap crappy phrases) then I prefer subbed. In the end I am more for dubbed.

I think one flaws of subbed is that it is sometimes to literal in its translation, and the message or feeling is lost in translation. Also it is easier watch a dubbed version, call me lazy but it makes taking in the artwork and animation more simple.

It depends on the show. I love the dub of .hack//SIGN, but I absolutely abhor the .hack//Twilight dub. Fruits Basket is great in both languages. Mahou Tsukai Tai and Slayers(TV) are better in English. Escaflowne's dub is terrible. It's all a matter of personal preference, not some overall "one is automatically better!!" thing.

*SUB- Outstanding translation, above average voice cast. Good in my book.
*DUB- Very, VERY loose in comparison to counterpart, voices much of the time lacking but shining every now and then. Half-decent.


ANY CITY HUNTER FILM/TV SPECIAL
*SUB- Somewhat loose translation, legendary voices.
*DUB- GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....!?

*SUB- Translation, while improving somewhat, is still missing something. Voices overall satifactory, though at times annoying (Naya Goro's "Zenigata," anyone?)
*DUB- No....NOO....NO WAY!!

If I buy something on DVD and haven't seen it before, I'll watch it with the English dub for the first time out. But I like watching them subbed too.

I acutually like both dub and sub. It really depends on my mood. I love DVDs for their dual language/sub tracks. I've listened to a dub and then turned around and watched the sub version. Really fun. Hyper Police comes to mind with that. The sub version was close to the dub but slightly different. The combination of watching both added a lot to the story.


But some anime is really beter in the original Japanese with subtitles. SailorMoon comes to mind here. And then some don't differ much at all. DaiGuard is a good example of that.

Some like Shin Cutey Honey or Cutey Honey Flash need to be watched in the subbed version to get the true unbutchered story.

So I say thank God for DVDs with multiple language tracks.

I'm a dub man myself, so long as the dub is either good (Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Magical shopping arcade Abenobashi) or bad but intentionally so (Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy) otherwise I'll watch it dubbed, but then again bad dubs don't faze me as much as some people...although the early dubs of certain shows (Kagome in the IY episodes up until they introduce Naraku) make my ears bleed

But I did like the Japanese voice in the TENCHI MUYO IN LOVE scene where Tenchi struggles with Ryoko to help his mother, screaming frantically to be released.

Well, the quality of Matt K. Miller's acting as Tenchi is mixed in my view. It matters which Tenchi show I'm watching. In the OVAs and the movies, Miller is fine, giving some memorable moments, but in TENCHI UNIVERSE and TENCHI IN TOKYO, he really sounds whiny. I also liked Miller's other work, such as RUROUNI KENSHIN (as the one-eared German officer of the Black Knights in one of the post-Kyoto anime sagas). Any latest work?

There are some shows where I like the dub better and others where I prefer the sub. It matters how good or bad the dub is. RUROUNI KENSHIN and EVA I wouldn't mind having only the dub. DBZ and SAILOR MOON, I NEED the sub. And there are ones where I need both, like TENCHI and TRIGUN.

While I'm willing to watch either,I prefer dubs whenever available(of course,this applies only to animation...live-action dubs almost always always look silly)....Somehow,I just find it easier to connect with the characters if they're speaking English...That,and alot of the time,I find sub translations too literal....

Most of my fave series have decent dubs,IMO....(Fruits Basket,Tenchi Muyo!/Universe,Inu-Yasha,Ranma 1/2,Maison Ikkoku)...Sailor Moon's dub's pretty much hit-or-miss,but I like it(sub's great,but I don't care for Usagi's voice)...

As for subs,I like Card Captor Sakura(the only decent dub of the series is the second movie)...also Urusei Yatsura(Lum and Ten-chan have such cute voices!!!)...

I like both too. But it usually depends on if the dubbing is good or if the subs are easy to understand. I've run across many that had alot of broken sentences. I also like the Bilengual dvds, I usually watch the dubbed first and then the sub, and the differences are so clear.

Unless the dub is horrendous or it is a hackjob I perfer dubs. I don't know why but I just perfer it over subs. This is just my opinion though.

I don't have a preference either way. I do tend watch stuff subbed first, but I watch the dub the next time I watch a series or a movie. It also depends on the situation. If I'm able to sit back and completely focus on the show, it'll probably be the sub. If I'm watching with non-anime fans or I'm engaged in other activities, it'll probably be the dub.

I will admit, though, that I have a preference in how I view certain titles. I hate Escaflowne's dub, so I watch it sub only. I don't care for Cowboy Bebop's Japanese version, so I watch the dub.

I don't really care if I see it dubbed or subbed, I'll watch the show in either form, assuming it's not a "hack 'n slash dub", then it's the same thing. So as long I get to see the show, the form in which I see it doesn't bother me.

Perhaps this is due to my personal preferences, but I prefer subs to dubs. The Malaysian dubs of Slayers, Dragonball, Sailormoon, Digimon (all variants), Ultraman (all variants), Sakura Wars and many more anime are just horrible. So sir, no Malaysian dubs for me.

Generally speaking, dub voices can't really compare to the original voices on the anime: a good example is Initial D, which, after it was dubbed by Tokyopop, had been edited and twisted into a perversion of its previous self... (Any Initial D fan will tell you that). Even the Chinese dubs didn't sound so good as the JApanese dubs...

Anyway, I much prefer subs - cuz then you can pick up bits of Japanese here and there. I already know some racing terms :P ^_^
