Animation on DVD (http://www.animationondvd.com) has released the following press release regarding an online petition, which is trying to get "Looney Tunes" and "Merrie-Melodies" on DVD:
Looney Tunes-Merrie Melodies Petition Receives 2,500 Signatures
Chattanooga, Tenn.---Animation on DVD has received 2,500 of the 10,000 signatures the Web site is seeking for its petition to Warner Bros. asking for the restoration and release of classic Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons on the DVD. These cartoons feature popular characters such as Bugs Bunny Daffy Duck and Porky Pig.
The petition aims to bring attention to the restoration needs of the Warner Bros. classic animation film library as well as support the release of those shorts on DVD. It has been reported that some limited restoration has been completed, but the AOL/Time-Warner family of companies has overlooked the urgent public demand for this preservation and the subsequent DVD release.
The petition states that these short films “are a big part of our popular culture” which span several generations that have grown up with the classic cartoons. DVD enthusiasts have been clamoring for the release of the Looney Tunes-Merrie Melodies since the debut of the DVD format. The response from Warner Bros. for the last several years has been “we are working on it.” The goal of this petition is to encourage AOL/Time-Warner to put every effort possible into restoring and releasing these cartoons on DVD in a timely fashion.
Supporters from the professional animation world include Don Bluth, director of such films as “The Secret of NIMH” and “The Land Before Time” and Ralph Bakshi, whose directorial efforts include “Fritz the Cat” and “The Lord of the Rings”.
Don Bluth -
"The value of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies is immeasurable. The work of the animators and storytellers of the 30's, 40's and early 50's is inspirational and highly entertaining. Something all children should experience.... no matter how old they are ... I am a 64 year old child myself. With the advent of DVD and the titles now available, it would be important to include these animated classics to the family home libraries."
Ralph Bakshi-
"The Warner Bros. cartoons of the 30, 40, 50's, are to my mind, the best animation ever done. They were pure cartoons with brilliant dialog animation and action animation. I think they are unsurpassed. I teach an animation thesis class at The School of Visual Arts, and show these films to my students frame by frame. As far as animation goes, video and DVDs allow future generations to continue to view this marvel. If they were paintings instead of cartoons, they would hang in museums."
