Dark Horse has been translating and releasing Berserk for the past few years... now they're finally past the events that took place in the anime and going forward with new material.

Anyone reading it? It rocks.

I got like 15 eps. of the Anime, I only watched the first one and never really got into it.

I mirrored this thread to the Anime Forum, as I'm sure some of the folks over there have some comments on the Berserk manga. :)

I'm farther ahead than DH, but I am buying their adaptation of Berserk (since it seems they have done a pretty good job with it so far). I only have volumes 1-4 and plan to get the others gradually. I'd definitely encourage people that have seen the anime to read the manga anyway they can (or anyone that likes medieval-set stories chalk full of violence (and the occasional naughty scene in there)and adult themes, and a great story that shows an in-depth view of the dark side of mankind.

It's a bit too "over the top" for me. Plus the pacing later on is really bad, and combined with Miura constantly having delays makes it near unreadable for me.

Check out my avatar and signature and then ask me again if I'm reading Berserk. (-:

I've also read ahead, but the official Dark Horse translation is much better than some *ahem* other translations that are out there, so I've been buying the legit volumes as they come out as well. Got to support a good, respectful, (largely) faithful official translation of a great manga like this!

...Unfortunately, it does kind of go downhill post-Eclipse. Only a couple of the many new characters who are introduced to make up the new supporting cast are interesting at all, and Miura dribbles out new information about the main plot line far too slowly for my tastes. It's still worth reading, but not quite as fantastic as the Golden Age arc that was adapted into the anime.

I've got the volumes 1 - 3 and plan to get others. I like it, but often wonder how fans of it (mainly Amazon reviewers) tout it as sooooo much better than other series.

What's so "adult" sex and violence anyway?

Yes. I have all 16 volumes released so far. Man, one every two months just isn't fast enough!

Berserk may be one of my favorite ongoing stories. What a great cast of characters. Never before have I wanted one character to win all over the place and another character to die in a horrible violent disgusting death. Of course I'm talking about Guts and Griffith, respectively.

Well, it's certainly "adult" in the sex and violence sense, but there's a lot of great characterization going on behind it, too. The first couple volumes (up until it flashes back to Guts joining the Hawks in the "Golden Age" arc) don't really get into it, though; those are just to set the mood, establish the setting, and foreshadow what happens at the end of the Golden Age arc. (And titillate the audience with gore a'plenty, of course.) Keep reading; it'll get more interesting.

I'm quite surprised at how Berserk is able to stick around for so long. Normally I'd imagine something so violent and with an arc like the Golden Age would be grounds to at least end the series earlier or something.

I mean come now, our hero's STILL struggling to get by and the antagonist is still running around at a state where just desserts seems like a great impossibility.

I honestly just don't get the "Post eclipse" hate.
Its slower, but not dragging (well Vol.31 was pretty bad).
And the release dates are as slow as they ever were.

It seems that less of the hate comes from the stuff itself, but nostolgia for the Golden Age.

It's not just the slow pace, it's also Guts' retinue of annoying sidekicks. Farnese and Serpico are kinda fun, but Puck, Isidoro, and Schierke are obnoxious as all getout. Also Schierke and Flora's whole witchcraft / nature worship thing kinda screws up the whole "corruption of power" theme, since up until they're introduced the ONLY source of supernatural power is demonic in nature, requiring blood sacrifice a la Griffemto. I, for one, liked it better that way; it's more fitting with Berserk's dark, pessimistic outlook.

Not that I don't still like the manga post-Eclipse you understand, I just don't think it's as good as what precedes it.

Does anyone know when Volume 14 is supposed to come out? I got 13 like nearly a year ago, and I have not seen anything since. Come to think of it, I haven't seen any volume at Barnes & Noble lately. Heck, I can't even find Bastard!!. Does anyone know how long this series is?

14, 15 & 16 are all out. Most B&N I've been to never have Berserk or Bastard!! (or Rave Master or Ultimate Muscle). If they's a Borders anywhere near you try that (and there's always Amazon).

I was sold on Berserk some time ago through a marathon of the anime series. Now that the comic is beyond the series I'd like to give it a look, once I have some more cash to spare.

The Post-Eclipse stuff is growing on me. Although characters like Puck can be annoying, I never really found Isidro or Scherkie annoying at all, and they seem to have already developed more than since they were introduce (especialy Isidro). Also I'm getting into the fact that Guts is no longer a man obsessed with vengeance, and seems to actually be playing the "cool and collected" leader most of the time (except when he's under the influence of his armor). I find it a refreshing change to the the usual grim pessimism that dominated most of the Black Swordsman arcs.

It does seem like chapter releases are slower than usual, but that might just me.

14, 15 and probably 16 are already out.

Bastard!! is still ongoing with about 24 or so volumes

Post Eclipse stuff gets better. Mostly when Griffith returns, and Guts finally has a new supporting cast.

No, I meant how many volumes is Berserk? As for Bastard!!, there are only 23 volumes in Japan so far, as I have all of them, but there does not seem to be much of a plot from what it looks.

Oh, and I have always enjoyed the post eclipse stuff just for the fact that Femto is around. Femto freaking rules, as does the entire God Hand. I wish they made figures of the God Hand, but they only make the pre-eclipse characters.

There are plenty of post-Eclipse action figures, including Femto. I should know, I have one. A lot of them are hard to find, but keep looking. They're out there.

As for how many volumes? Berserk is up to volume 31 in Japan, and still going. I don't expect it to be done for a long time.

Guts and his band are currently heading towards Elfhelm to see about hopefully curing Caska. The reincarnated Griffith and his new Band of the Hawk are at war with the Kushan Empire... Griffith himself seems to be playing false messiah. He and Princess Charlotte have been reunited, and I'm sure Griffith is planning to become king.

I know about Femto, but I'm looking for figures on the God Hand themselves, mostly Void and the succubus lady. Are there any?

Wow, 31 volumes and still going? That is way too long. I just can't see Berserk staying good that long, especially with no ending in site. I could picture the series being 25 volumes, but hardly anything beyond that.

No figures. There was a limitd edition statue set of all five members of the God Hand, but good luck finding that.
