This poll is difficult since I haven't seen some of the episodes from the first season in quite a while. But, I voted for "On Leather Wings". I truly loved the mood and the attitude of that first episode. It was really well directed and beautifully animated.

I went with "The Last Laugh", mainly because that was the first TAS ep I'd ever seen....and I loved it... :)
It would've been "On Leather Wings", but, I seem to remember enjoying "The Last Laugh" more..

Funny, I didn't like "On Leather Wings" Manbat bugged me.
I voted for The Forasken, cause I really enjoyed it, and it showed Batman sticking up for the little guy, and not just worring about the high profile crime.

Howdy all,
First poll, already the choices are tough. Hrmph.
I picked "On Leather Wings" because it's just soooo atmospheric, and also because it's the first episode that I saw, which promptly turned me into a BTAS fan. The use of light and shadow, the whole "dark deco" look and feel, the voice acting (the bit where Batman clicks on the radio and goes into "Bruce" voice totally blew my mind at the time -- kudos to Kevin Conroy for that), and the fact that they actually show Batman bleeding (at least when I taped it) all combine to make this one of my favorite episodes.
The other front runners for me were "P.O.V." and "Two Face Part I." I'm a sucker for a good Rashomon reference), and the fact that "P.O.V." focused on the GCPD and their relationship to Batman made for an interesting contrast to the norm. Making Montoya the leading character was great, too -- I really wished they did more with her in the animated series.
"Two Face Part I" was an ep everybody was looking forward to after getting introduced to Harvey Dent. I would have preferred that they did a more-or-less straight adaptation of Andy Helfer's story from the Batman annual in the early 90's (Two-Face is a victim of domestic violence, and the coin was the way his father would determine whether to beat Harvey or not; took many years for Harvey to learn the coin was 2-headed...), but I can understand how that would have been a bit too intense and dark for the BTAS audience. Still, it was a good episode, and a decent reworking of a classic Batman villian.
Oh, I can hardly wait for the poll decisions to come...

Christmas With The Joker is perfect because the Joker takes the premise of a Christmas special, an event that exists to bring people happiness, and uses it to commit acts of kidnapping and murder, all the while with a big frightening grin on his face. The present he gives Batman at the end is PRICELESS.

Two Face part 1 gets my vote. That storyline is what made Two Face my favorite Batman villain.

On Leather Wings is probably my favorite story from the older Animated Series. It has great animation (better than any episode afterward in my opinon), the writing is excellent, and the acting is great. My only problem is Alfred's voice (not the same actor as is the later eps.), but it's still the best.

Very tough choice, between TwoFace part I and On Leather Wings.
I have to admit the voice change from Batman to Bruce Wayne in 'On Leather Wings' really made that voice my fav.
But Two Face is my second fav. villian so he has to get my vote, plus it was a very good episode to show us Two Face.

I picked Two Face - Part I, although it's possible that I'm thinking of the 2 eps combined. Looks like it's gona be a runaway battle between Two Face and On Leather Wings.

wow, this is tough.
im torn between two-face part 1, pretty poison, and pov. pov, only because i think it had the best animation out of all the btas eps, but hey, i dont think i'll vote for it.
nothing to fear was also great, but i havent seen it in forever! i remember it was a great intro for prof crane, and it had that awesome scene at the end where bats is seeing hallucinations of his parents. that was a good ep, but since i havent seen it in a while, its hard to judge properly.
hmmm, this is hard, oh why do we have to choose??!! hmm, ill have to think about this one. peace.

I picked 'On leather wings'. To me it's the best BTAS episode: not only does the story work marvelously (with a classic Batman/GCPD chase, nice dialogues, a great ending) but the art and the animation are absolutely mind-boggling. Plus the music totally rocks (very "Danny Elfmanesque")
I would very disappointed if OLW didn't pass the first round...

This is gonna be a very tight match - and I hope that On leather Wings can pull it off. There...what? 5 more days in the poll. We still have plenty of time for some upsets and surprises...

I think it might be a good idea to remind us what the episodes were about by supplying a brief summary of each episode, because many of those episodes I can't remember what happened. So, I'm gonna go with Christmas with the Joker because it's my favorite of the ones I recognise.

"All men have something to hide. The brighter the picture, the darker the negative." - Rupert Thorne Two-Face, Part I
This was a really difficult choice for me with "Pretty Poison" and "P.O.V." also in the poll, but I went with "Two-Face." This in my view is the best of all of the villian intro episodes. The emotion in this ep and also Part II, just make this one of the better ones.

Aw, only one vote for Be a Clown. And hey, it's me! Well, it's always been my favorite episode. Yes, the story's not incredibly original, and the dialogue is nothing like the Two-Face episode, but you've gotta love Bruce as a bumbling bachelor struggling under the weight of a present, and Batman's at his best when he's the only hope of the helpless.
By the way....I'm Alex. I am a member from the way old days....and I'm talking years ago. Are there any other old posters out there?

There are still quite a few "WF Vets" around here. Some still post and others ghost, but hopefully you'll see some familair faces around here. Welcome back!

Whoa, it's up to 79 already. I'd guess it'll hit at least 100 at some point tonight. It's got a good chance to go 200+ by the end of the week. JH, did you have any estimate for how many votes you might get?

My goal is 100 by the end of the first day, and maybe 300 - 400 overall. I hope to build on it from there by advertising this bad-boy where ever I can. I'm very anxious to see this poll succeed! I'd also like to see the people behind this show feel free to partiicpate as well. I'd like to get a real good mix of votes in here. So far the poll is meeting expectations...*keeps fingers crossed*

JH, are you the same as DG?
You leave for a little while, you come back, and everything's completely different :D
It's crazy to think that I used to sit at home and post...and now, however long later, I'm in an entirely different state, across the US, going to college...
Time goes by pretty fast, I'd say!

Aargh!!
Only the first poll, and already I can't make a decision: "Two Face I" or "On Leather Wings."
Maybe I'll flip a coin. No, wait. . .
Maybe I'll get a little bat to tell me. No, wait. . .
Hmmm.
Okay, here it is: "Two Face I"
Almost as stylish as "On Leather Wings." But it cuts more deeply into a character's psychology. Also, I never liked the end of OLW; why is Bruce better than the scientist who created the thing at finding a cure?

Whoa, 400 would be really impressive. Heck it looks like it might reach 100 by 6pm. What would be really cool, is to see the number of poll votes rise each week. I really can't wait to se ehow Round Two works out. The best thing is that is concludes just as the new BTAS DVDs come out - how good of timing is that? The winner will be announced on April 22nd, just 1 day before the DVDs. Maybe this will help the time pass faster. As long as there isn't a tie, we should finish this on time!
400 is a chance...a slim one. 200 would be nice. But I'll know Sunday what to expect from future installments of the poll. This is just a really cool venture and I'm hoping it works out for the best!
Unfortunately I have never seen "On Leather Wings", I only started watching on Sky One in the UK a few weeks ago with Xmas with the Joker. I chose Two-Face I due to the fact that I really felt some real sympothy for the Harvey character. It was enjoyable seeing his roots.

Hmmm. it was betwen "two face" and "on leather wings" so i watched them both again. Wow tough choice. But I went with "on leather wings" because it was perfect. The animation was great. The dialogue between the police were believable and everything was in great form. Alfred's voice bugged me, but batman goign into Bruce mode while still in the suit was great!
The poll is past 100! :)

I voted for "On Leather Wings". That episode was one of the best by far. It had excellent writing, excellent animation, and excellent voice acting, particularly from Conroy. It was close between that and "Two-Face" part 1, but "On Leather Wings" won out in my personal struggle. :) I'm glad to see this poll is working out so well. Can't wait untill round 2!!!

"Two-Face pt 1" vs. "On Leather Wings"...that's the toughest choice I've had to make in a long time. But it had to be Two-Face, because that episode communicated such incredible emotion. The well-written dialogue, awesome animation, and glorious acting were all wonderful in their own right, but used as tools to tell such a powerful story...that was something to behold. "On Leather Wings" was fabulous, certainly, but I didn't think it had the same pathos or intensity of emotion that "Two Face" did. Plus there were the added bonuses of the first cartoon character ever to go to a psychiatrist (I think, but don't quote me on it!) and the fact that Kevin Conroy didn't sound like he had a sore throat. IMHO, out of this first poll, "Two-Face" is number 1, but after that tough choice, I'm almost dreading the next one!
P.S: 119 votes and counting! :)

My vote's for "Two-Face" part 1. One of the early episodes with incredible animation by TMS. In particular, the scenes with Harvey in therapy and the emergence of "Big Bad Harv", the chase by Batman as Harv is blackmailed into "taking a ride" to see Rupert Thorne, and watching the close-up of Harvey's face breaking down as Thorne threatens to reveal his "secret". Great storytelling, great animation.

No doubt, a lot of choices here and it is hard to pick as there are so many. I think Two Face is a prime example of why this animted series reached for fans of Batman. It really tells the tragic story of yet another very colorful character and does it quite well. This one little episode accomplishes what several of those poorly made live-action movies (Schumacher's in particular) couldn't.

I hear you, Sparvid. I, too, am a long time lurker and first time poster, however Two-Face Part 1 got my vote (although "On Leather Wings" and "POV" weren't far behind in my book). I just was amazed at the psychology of this character that they displayed in the show-a line cartoons don't usually choose to cross. And what an ending! Talk about leaving you hooked!
Anyway, fun poll. But really difficult.

POV had without a doubt, the best damned musical score (nothing to fear came close)... but my god it's just beautiful, and the story is gripping and touching. Two-face is a great story, no question... for for a one-parter, POV is glorious. X-mas with the Joker? Maybe I've just seen it too many times. If anyone can get me the music from POV, I will bloody name children after them.

I voted Two-Face part one. I think I've seen OLW, but I don't remember enough about it to vote for it.
But I just have to ask- why would someone actually vote for The Underdwellers???? Was there anything good in that episode? I sure don't remember anything.... Aside from Batman that is... Conroy's always good... But how does one come up with the idea that it's the best episode of the ten???? If someone can explain this to me, I'd appreciate it...

I dunno. What I do know is that episode contains the most disturbing visual (to me) out of the entire series. One of the kids is using a hoe to dig up the roots or whatever they have planted, and the hoe slips on a root while he's digging and gets driven right into the kid's ankle.

I think the poll will likely reach 250 - 300. I could see a real slow down in poll votes today, and I think that after the initial rush of the first few days, it slows down almost to a halt. Hopefully this poll will be able to keep a somewhat steady pace.
Also, I still find it neat the poll end son April 22nd, the day before the first Batman: Animated DVD hits. That's perfect...and I didn't even plan it that way!

Hey!
Ok enough joking around, I look forward to subjecting you all to my glorious sense of humor!
And remember, NEVER sell yourself short... well, don't sell yourself at all, but if you do, don't tell them you're short.
....... ew, my ex girlfriend called in the middle of this... there's a good post idea, what would Batman do when the woman who broke his heart calls him up out of the blue to reminiss? Would he be cold like Batman, or playboyish like Bruce?
Adios muchachos!
Thanks for the welcome. Awesome board by the way.
If Round 2 begins on April 22nd wouldn't that mean the poll actually finishes on the 29th?

Hard to make a choice out of all these great episodes, but I cast my vote for "P.O.V." One of my favorite storytelling frames is when the writer examines the differences in human perspective and how differently we all see things. Ironically, that concept also happens to fit perfectly with this polling activity. ;-)

Round Two ends on April 22nd -- Just in time for the DVD. And there will be a second poll. The turn out for this poll has been awesome, and will hopefully end up with about 250 votes - a good number! And I'm glad to see so many new faces! Such a great thing to see!
Correct me if I'm wrong but each poll lasts six days right?
If so then wouldn't this mean that round 2 ends on the 28th? Follow my math here:
Round 1 part 1 began on Feb. 4th and will end on Feb. 10th.
Round 1 part 2 begins on Feb. 11th and will end on Feb. 17th.
Round 1 part 3 begins on Feb. 18th and will end on Feb. 24th.
Round 1 part 4 begins on Feb. 25th and will end on Mar. 3rd.
Round 1 part 5 begins on Mar. 4th and will end on Mar. 10th.
Round 1 part 6 begins on Mar. 11th and will end on Mar. 17th.
Round 1 part 7 begins on Mar. 18th and will end on Mar. 24th.
Round 1 part 8 begins on Mar. 25th and will end on Mar. 31st.
Round 1 part 9 begins on Apr. 1st and will end on Apr. 7th.
Round 1 part 10 begins on Apr. 8th and will end on Apr. 14th.
Round 1 part 11 begins on Apr. 15th and will end on Apr. 21st.
Therefore Round Two will begin on the 22nd and end on the 28th. I worked this out pretty quickly, so if I am wrong please accept my apologies.
James Harvey
02-06-2002, 04:29 PM
No need for apologies...becuase you're right! For some reason I didn't add Round Two to the calculations and completely left it out! So...you are right! Round Two will begin on April 22nd..right before the DVD hits shelves!

I went with POV. I like the music, the lack of any real villain. I like the focus on GCPD. It just seems like an adult crime drama. Other choices would be On Leather Wings and Two-Face part 1. I see that Xmas with the Joker is in 3rd. Never knew there were fans of the particular episode.

I knew it would be tough making a decision! I'm torn between, "Nothing to Fear" and "Pretty Poison". "Nothing to Fear" has that classic Batman line: "I am vengeance! I am the night! I am BATMAN!!" But, then again, "Pretty Poison" has Poison Ivy! I guess "Pretty Poison" will be getting my vote! :D

Two Face - 77....I think it'll be close...
it's sad, cause two face would probably rather have it the other way around...

"On Leather Wings" was great because it was put together as a pilot for the series, even though "The Cat & The Claw" was the first BTAS episode aired, on primetime one Sunady evening in Sept '92 I believe. "Wings" was the perfect transition from the Burton Batman. It was dark, witty, & the Elfman-esque score was on point. Much props to Shirley walker & the WB orchestra.
P.O.V. was another great story. It took me a while to figure out what P.O.V. stood for (Point of View) as in the 3 points of views during the episode:
A. Detective Bullocks blatant lies
B. Officer Wilkes mythical encounter w/ the Batman (one of the best segments of the entire series. I always rewind that part)
C. and Officer Montoya's honest testimony.
One of the funniest moments of the series is when the Interal Affairs guy slapped Bullock's Snickers bar clear across the room, much to Harvey's chagrin! :-)
Ah, but the best of this lot has got to be Two-Face Part 1.
This episode was tight from start to finish, from Harvey's nightmare, to the sting operation, Harvey's pyche session, down to the confrontation at the refinery. I especially love the unveiling of Two-Face, that still lith had to have been the work of Timm. And how appropriate that Harvery's fiancee was named Grace...as in Harvey's fall from Grace. Also, this ep featured some of the best animation and music of the series. I especially love the part when Batman is tailing Thorne's limo. When the limo hangs that sharp right, the next shot has Batman swinging in pursuit. A moment well executed. Also, this ep introduces the entire Thorne entourage (Candice, Frankie & the boys) who'll make many other cameos during the series' run. John Vernon was great as Thorne & Richard Moll has Two-Face nailed.
This story, much like most of the earlier episodes, played out more like primetime crime drama than an action cartoon. A credit to the writers, editors, directors, and the sound and musical staff.
Can't wait to see what Week 2 has to offer.
Good Ol' Batmanuel!

Actually, I didn't care much for this ep. The animation was horrible. However, I did like the harmonica soundtrack. Again Shirley Walker getting the job done. Bruce is imprisoned and forced to do slavework. The harmonica is the most apprpriate instrument for such an ep. Brilliant!
My only question is where the heck was he? Did those guys take Bruce all the way out to New Mexico or something? Am I mistaking or was that the southwest? I mean canyons, gulches, cliffs, mountains. This is not terrain found in the outskirts of Gotham, correct?
Aslo, Xmas w/ the Joker. Not the best Joker episode but it did accomplish one thing: it showed the lengths Joker would go through to humiliate Batman. He busted out of Arkham on a rocket-powered tree, kidnapped the Commish, Bullock, & Gleason. He created a Santa tank to shot fireworks into the sky, he put out a pirate broadcast, blew up a bridge, turned Gotham observatory into a giant canon. And once he lured them into the Laffco factory, he had the Nutcracker sdtrk ready to go. All this effort just to sucker the Batman into opening a prank gift: the old pie-in-the-face gag. When Bats got splattered, Joker couldn't contain his glee.
In short, Joker will do anything: abduct, sabotage, murder, etc...just for kicks, even if it's just over a harmless prank like a pie-in-the-face.

That's pretty good! I've never heard that version before. However, I did hear the version sung by The Joker in school in the early 80s. That parody was invented LONG ago. My parents probably sang it, too!

I voted for "the forgotten" too. The cool bayou soundtrack, and that fight in the mine is why I voted for this episode. The way Batman took out the goons one by one in the dark and sending the last one up in the minecart was very cool. As to the terrain question, that's the cool thing about Gotham, it's right next to everything!

I wanted to vote for a bunch of them On Leather Wings, Nothing To Fear, Pretty Poison, P.O.V., and Two-Face: Part 1 were all exceptional episodes. But I had to go with The Forgotten. This episode just had that special something that makes you think. It can even make you question how you view others, without being at all preachy. It doesn't look like it has any chance of winning. I really liked how PRETTY POISON ended. So ominous and a bit frightening.
And "Beware the Grey Ghost" is in the second group? Aw no!! This might be harder than I thought! And The Forgotten was pretty cool. Granted it's not the best episode, but it took a cliched concept and put a nice spin on it.

"It's Never Too Late" takes place during a mob war in Gotham. Batman tries to save Arnold Stromwell from mobsters, while also trying to put him on the right path. It is a great and very mature episode. It's the only cartoon I know of that shows a kid going through drug withdrawl and trying to get clean. The ending is just spectacular, too. I love that episode, but "Heart of Ice" is just a bit better...

True. Round 2 is going to be a battle. Until then, I think Poll #3 (in Round 1) is going to be the thorny one for me. Not a bad ep in there, and quite a few standouts: Feat of Clay pt2, Joker's Favor, and Perchance to Dream. Whew. Those 3 could've made the top 10 on their own.

Exactly 250 votes. Nice. Looking forward to Round 2, even though I'm thinking a certain ep is going to run away with it.

Poll #2 won't be hard for me. I already know what I'm voting for, so the decision will be quick and painless for me. :) But man, that segment is just choke full of really good episodes. Thankfully, Feat of Clay Part 2 will be in the third pull...I'd hate not tobe able to vote for that one...*phew*...

"Feat of Clay Part 2" was a great episode, but I don't think I could vote for anything except "Joker's Favor". Too bad "Clock King" won't have a chance in that poll, I really liked that episode.

It'll come down to "Heart of Ice" & "Beware the Gray Ghost"
"Ice" won this series numerous awards, best programming, best music, sounf efx, etc... Dini's recreation of the Mr. Freeze character brought the villain back from DCU obscurity. Since "Heart of Ice" Freeze has appeared in numerous books, and was the subject of 2 feature films: Sub-Zero and Batman & Robin. I'm still mad Patrick Stewart wasn't cast to be Freeze. It might to be a bold statement to say Heart of Ice is the single greatest episode in the enitre run of Batman.
Beware the Gray Ghost was another awesome ep. The staff really layed down the noir in this ep. And having Adam West was a real treat for us old school Bat-fans. Though I'm onyl 24, when I was kid, I rushed home from school to watch Adam West on syndication. But I don't believe West is enough to this poll.
Heart of Ice will win.

I suppose anything's possible. :p
How bout a friendly wager on poll #2? Say 5 chicken nuggets that HoI goes 2:1 on Grey Ghost. :) Not that GG's a bad ep, I loved it, but HoI is a classic.
For poll #3, Perchance to Dream gets my vote. It's probably my favorite episode of the entire series.

Joker's Favor is a classic, not only is it Harley 1st apperance but I love when Harley blows kisses at the frozen cops.

Well, "Heart of Ice" is the ONLY episode I've never seen, and I barely remember "It's Never Too Late," so I'm obviously not voting for either of them. It's still a tough choice though. Two of my favorite episodes of the whole series are "Beware the Grey Ghost" and "See No Evil" (which I think is a very underrated episode). I really don't know which to vote for.

"Beware the Gray Ghost" & "See No Evil" were great episodes.
I can't believe you've never seen "Heart of Ice". This is easily one of the Top 3 episodes of the entire sries!!! That's like watching Seinfeld w/o ever seeing "The Contest"!!!
I hope you see "Heart of Ice" soon.
I was disappointed they didn't air that ep during the Batman vs. Superman Toonami event. I'm still shocked more people voted for Cal-El.

One more day pepes. Everyone get ready to vote for Feat of Clay. I just know you wanna. Forget that Grey Ghost and Heart of Ice business. Feat of Clay is the ep you want to vote for. Isn't it? Yes, it is!

I also can't believe you managed to miss "Heart of Ice," which I predict will take home the prize when this contest is over. But I understand not being able to choose between BGG and SNE. Heck, if HoI weren't in that list, I would be paralyzed between BGG, SNE, Feat of Clay 2 and Two Face 2.

Maxie--
That "Feat of Clay" episode in Poll #2 is Part 1. Part 2 is on the next Poll, so that might make your choice a little easier this round. But probably not.

D'oh! :D
You're right. But there are so many other "part 2" episodes on that list (and Feat of Clay 2 is SOOOOO much better than part 1) that my brain instantly leapt to part 2.
Well, cool! Something to look forward to in the next poll.

Feat of Clay I was good, but the animation, story, & action of Part II was far above par. You can tell 2 different studios handled the story. Part I was Dong yang I beleive. Part II was Spectrum, they did the best work on the series.
Depending on the field, Feat of Clay II has my ealry vote in Poll #3.

Actually the animation for Feat of Clay part II was done by TMS, one of the premiere Japanese animation studios, and in my opinion, animators of the BEST episodes of the Batman series, namely "Two-Face" part 1, "Feat of Clay" part II, "The Demon Within", "Over the Edge", and also "Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker".
