Paramount Building picture

With all the discussions of Paramount/Famous active lately, I decided to do some searching to find out the status of that famous (!!) studio, or at least the building it was in.

My initial fear (I don't visit NY as much as I did a few years ago) was that the structure no longer stood, smacked in favor of some more modern edifice à la Virgin, Nasdaq, or Viacom (cringe), but turns out the auld hall is still very much with us, as this picture (http://www.wirednewyork.com/images/paramount_building_front.jpg) will attest. Yes, that is WWF New York, a-k-a The World, whose marquee appears under the (quite well-restored script-Paramount emblem above the main entrance.

Ironically, the rasslin' body began a new relation jest the other year with "Par"* parent Viacom, a long-term TV deal with their TNN cable channel...

*as Variety, of which I only know of one library locally that receives, calls 'em...

Actually, that's where the old Paramount Theater was, where Bing and Bob and Martin and Lewis used to make their perosnal apperances in support of their Paramount pictures.

IIRC, the Famous Studios building was about five blocks to the north and on the west side of Broadway (my first grade class got to take a tour of the place in the fall of 1963, but other than the made-for-TV Casper stuff and seeing some cells of a character I didn't know anything else about until 30 years later, when it showed up on Nickelodeon in "Near Sighted and Far Out," I don't remember that much else about the tour or the exact location of the building).

I work right across the street from the Paramount building on W.43rd st. in Times Square.The Original Famous Studios cartoon dept, was located on W.45th st. The Fleischer Studios on the other hand is located at 1600 Broadway on W.48th St. on the sixth flr, which is still visable to see.
