View Full Version : Weekend Box Office: 'Disturbia' takes all the 'Glory'
The Clown Prince
04-15-2007, 04:03 PM
After two weeks we have a new number one movie as Disturbia debuted in first place with $23 million.
Falling one spot to second place was Blades of Glory with $14 million and a $90.1 million total.
Meet the Robinsons continues to slowly do well as it made another $12.1 million and brings it's total up to $72 million.
Debuting in fourth place was Perfect Stranger with $11.5 million.
And rounding out the top 5 is Are We Done Yet? with $9.2 million and a $33 million total.
Also opening this weekend was Pathfinder in sixth place with $4.8 million. Debuting too but way down in eleventh place was Redline with $4 million. It looks like supposedly trashing an Enzo didn't gain this anymore ticket purchases.
The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie came in thirteenth place in 877 theaters with $3 million.
But none could have done so badly as Slow Burn did opening in 1,163 theaters with $800,000 and a nineteenth place spot.
300 meanwhile becomes the first film of 2007 to reach $200 million! It's worldwide total currently stands at $376.4 million and just might reach $400 million by the time it's theater run is over! And all with a production budget of $65 million (not counting marketing and advertising).
Films leaving the top 12 this weekend were Firehouse Dog (14th), TMNT (15th) which leaves with $50.6 million. And also leaving was Premonition (18th).
Opening next weekend are four new movies. First up is Vacancy (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=15697) (rated R) starring Luke Wilson, Kate Beckinsale, Frank Whaley, and Ethan Embry.
Up next is Fracture (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=13868) (rated R) with Anthony Hopkins, Ryan Gosling, David Strathairn, Billy Burke, Rosamund Pike, Embeth Davitz, and Valerie Dillman.
Then we have In the Land of Women (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=8712) (rated PG-13) starring Adam Brody, Kristen Stewart, Meg Ryan, Olympia Dukakis, Makenzie Vega, Clark Gregg, and Elena Anaya.
And finally we have Hot Fuzz (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=13410) (rated R) with Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Jim Broadbent, Paddy Considine, Steve Coogan, Timothy Dalton, Martin Freeman, Paul Freeman, Bill Nighy, Lucy Punch, Anne Reid, Billie Whitelaw, Stuart Wilson, and Edward Woodward.

Aqua Teen did pretty good considering the amount of theaters it opened it up at. Almost ever review I've read had good things to say about it, and I plan on seeing it again soon just for the opening 'Let's all to the lobby' parody.

Is Aqua Teen 2D animation like the series? Because I kept seeing pictures for it on MySpace that were done in really awesome-looking CGI.

That'd be the poster I guess- the movie looks basically the same as the show.
Shocker in Disturbia as #1, good for Grindhouse in pulling in almost the same as last week I guess.

Its standard 2D as the trailer suggests.

There is a brief CGI sequence in the movie When the Insanoflex is activated and begins to transform.

I haven't seen the poster; tt was just some kind of ad for the official MySpace page that I saw. I was like, "Woah! If the movie actually looks like that it might be something to see." :) Heck, I didn't even know there was a movie until I first saw those images about a week ago.

I really hate how Grindhouse, a unique movie experience is doing so bad at the box office. I knew the length and rating would effect how much it would make but not this much. Hopefully if they do split up the movies (which would ruin the grindhouse experience) it will help them make more money. I would have loved another QT and RR Grindhouse movie but I don't see that happening. I guess Machette will have to do. On another note, congrats on 300 hitting and exceeding the 200 million mark a great achievement for R rated well adapted comic book movies!

I reeeeeeally need to catch Grindhouse. I will!
ATHFCMFfT was a blast. Plus it made about 4 times its production cost in one weekend, and few films can brag about that. I wonder how many more millions its marketing cost, though.

I just saw Disturbia and it was actually quite good.

I'm sure it probably starts with a decimal point. I don't think it's been advertised outside [as] and online hardly.

Almost ever review I've read had good things to say about it, and I plan on seeing it again soon just for the opening 'Let's all to the lobby' parody. What reviews are you reading? Most critics are panning the film hard core, which is not to say it's unexpected. Most probably haven't heard of the film outside the whole Boston thing, and just as many of them probably don't even get the brand of humor as the film's target audience expects.

Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad reviews topped off with predictable "U'LL LIKE IT IF U DO DRUGGS, LOL" comments.

Ugh seeing Grindhouse doing this bad makes me sick. It's hard to believe that Tarantino and Rodriguez combined can't make more then $11 million but Disturbia can make $23 million.

I too am saddened to see such a fresh, creative movie like Grindhouse doing so poorly, especially given its budget of $53 million.

Pathfinder came out this weekend??? WTF? The preview I saw weeks ago in the theater said Summer 2007.
Anyway, what is Distrubia about? My Best Buy was giving away tickets, but when I went there, they said they were out.
I want to see Hot Fuzz next weekend, but all of my money is being saved for Spider-Man 3.

A kid under house arrest sees his neighbor kill someone. It's clearly a Rear Window knock off, but regardless, it looks entertaining.

Does America have some vendetta against movies that are actually good and entertaining? Outside of kids movies (i.e. Cars), films with lots of Oscar buzz (i.e. The Departed), and controversial stuff politicians feel the need to see (i.e. Borat), films with good reviews seem to be avoided like plagues. And I'm not just talking about arty foreign stuff, even widely-released action films like Grindhouse and Children of Men have flopped. How The Matrix became a blockbuster is beyond me, given that it clearly has nothing in common with such "hits" as Ghost Rider and Wild Hogs. My faith in America is falling. Its especially sad for me as an aspiring filmmaker. If I try to make the best movie I possibly can, whats the point if nobody is going to see it and the studio considers me "unprofitable"?

Except Ghost Rider was fantastic. As was 300, and TMNT. I agree about Wild Hogs, Blades of Glory, all of those Eddie Murphy movies, and a few other things.
However, next month should be interesting, as Spider-Man 3 will dominate for two weekends (killing all zombies in its second weekend), only to be barely defeated by a green ogre, but the week after that, the pirates will invade and dominate all treasures, while leaving the spider alive to recupperate.

Just thought I'd chime here with a box office update.
Box Office Mojo has updated their 300 page (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=300.htm) and they report that 300 has now passed $400 million worldwide with a total now at $405.2 million!
Man oh man. Congrats Warner Brothers! Just wait until the DVD comes out and see what the sales figures will be there.

You know how some movies' concepts can be described by simple "what if?" statements? Disturbia's is, "What if Rear Window was crap?"

Considering how many other movies have been "inspired" by Rear Window (including the actual TV remake with Christopher Reeve several years ago), I thought little of it. Disturbia still looks entertaining, and I plan to rent the DVD when it comes out. :)

Rear Window is a great movie. Grace Kelly's introduction shot is a sight to behold. :)

Indeed. Indeed.

Vertigo is the hard one, to be sure. Psycho is in influential, and anyone not entertained by North By Northwest really doesn't deserve to watch movies.

I don't know; Vertigo is a great film, to be certain, but it's less accessible. I think that Rear Window, Psycho, and North by Northwest are better for understanding what made Hitchcock one the greatest pop entertainers in history. Vertgio is a very dense film; if I were letting a Hitchcock virgin (like a certain friend of mine...) cut her teeth, Vertigo wouldn't be as good a place to start as Foreign Correspondant or the afforementioned pictures.
By the way, what IS the reference in NBNW? Isn't it that he's flying north on Northwest airlines?

But would have sounded awful, IMO.
According to the trivia at Wikipedia....
"The title, North by Northwest, is taken from a line in Hamlet, a work also concerned with the slippery nature of reality. Hitchcock noted this in an interview with Peter Bogdanovich in 1963. The title is also a pun on the Northwest Airlines reference in the film."

So we're both sort of right.
