A Superhero for us?

Would it be possible for us, in 2002 and all that, to actually support a superhero? Some unknown person in a very interesting looking costume with, perhaps, super powers? Or is our society of today the kind that wouldn't need one? I'm talking mostly about the United States for this, but it could relate to other countries. What kind of hero do you think would be possible for us in this day in age? Superman or Batman? Or maybe Flash, Wonder Woman or Green Lantern?

Some would love him...others would just think he was some nut running around beating people up and try to figure out what drives him. He'd probably be doing penance for some past sin or avenging some great loss. Chances are he'd save our arses ten times over and wouldn't see a drop of ink in the local rags, except maybe negative editorials. Local law enforcement would despise him. Maybe he'd have powers. maybe not. He'd be young, maybe even a teen, but his soul would be ten million years old, aged by suffering and anger. And he'd have a young female friend who loves him, but can't bring herself to say so, for her own reasons.

I doubt that even with our technology today we'd be able to create a super-hero of some sort, as cool as it would be. At most we could have hi-tech police men or something. Most people probably won't like the idea of a super-hero though, it would probably scare people.

i seriously doubt that he/she would be accepted by the general public. powers are out of the question since this is taking place in the real world. he/she wouldn’t have a fancy costume, probably just some old clothes that didn’t attract too much attention and a mask that covers most of his/her face. he/she would probably cause more trouble than good since most likely it would be a person who was wronged in some way and would take it upon them self to become a vigilante with little or no experience.
