View Full Version : If a network gave you an oppurtunity to make an animated drama what would it be like?

And they're giving you all the freedom they would give a normal live action show. And you more or less have creative freedom.
Okay I'll start us off. I'd want to make it a Space Opera kinda thing. I don't know if it would necciserily be like Gene Rodenbery's (Star Trek creator for those of you who don't know.), but maybe more like what George Lucas does. I would create several key charecters and subsequently surround them with secondary charecters.
Ex: GundamW
Releena: Pegan, Minister Dorlan, and the girls that always hang with her.
Trowa: Catherine, all the people he works with.
Quatera: Mogwinouts (spelling), Winner family,
and so on. I'd create a rouge's gallery, and try really hard to give each of the charecters deapth.
Right of the bat I'd map out the story arcs of the series from begining to end before production ever started, then I would personally write every single script (which I'm learning how to do.) That way we could put the money that would usually go to the writers into animation and FX. I'd oversee the voice director (but I wouldn't intrude on his/her job) and if its possible give my advice to the actors as to how the charecter might behave in such a scenario.
And I'd personally see how the marketing is going. I don't want stupid commercials for my show. Like someone trying to kiddify it, when I'm trying to target adults, teenagers, "and" kids. The commercials would be filled with the best animation and dialouge in the series. I'd get the staff to agree on what we should do in this department (I wouldn't be one of those tyranical people, I'd take their input on stuff)

Oh yeah and 2 more things.
1. No noticably recycle animation like every episode or 2. (ex. tranformation sequences, and special attacks.)
2. Vocal music/ such as the them (if it has vocals) would only be played at key points in the story arcs.

Hey give me a sec don't watch this board all day you know.
It won't be kidified and there won't be recycled animation. Cool I like your idea already
As for me I'd go with a post WWIII Earth (which looks like post WWII Europe) following a rouge team (kinda like the Swat Kats) tring their best to stop evil from taking advantage of the weak state of the world. Natch our heroes will have a hard time telling the good guys from the bad guys from the grayish guys as the world will be full of cleaver people tring to trick our heros into doing their dirty work.

about a young ninja girl who leaves her clan and tries to live a normal life, away from killing, spying, and feudal intrigue, but is relentlessly pursued by her former comrades.

I'd really want to see some kick ***** comic book series faithfully adapted into animation. I'd start with Preacher and Sin City.

I'm attracted to historical myth/fiction. I'm sure if Disney let me go wild with a Mulan TV seroes, I could go places with it.
For starters, I would adopy a somewhat pale visual palette, in keeping with the Chinese art style without getting too stylized with it.
Secondly, NO talking animals. I'll have none of that in my show.
Thirdly, I would have an orchestral musical sense, accompanied with flutes and a very emotionally-driven musical flavour.
Seasons will revolve around arcs, though each episode will stand on its own, with maybe a few two or three parters a season. Setup will revolve around events AFTER the Mulan movie. My Mulan is older, wiser and cunning. I'll throw together some events where she is considered deceased--she'll do a lot of wandering in the series, though each season will take place in one specific setting. After this format is setup, it is easy to create situations involving Mulan, who is now an exile of sorts. I could, for instance, have Mulan walk into a city where she is employed as a bodyguard to someone. Political intrigue and juicy alliances occur around her, and I create stories with Mulan having to survive through such situations.
Whole lotta ideas can come out. I could create an arch-rival for Mulan who plays psychological games with her as well as proving to be an excellent swordfighter. You could texture this world with real historical background and culture.
Okay, well, this is just a brainstorm I made up on the spot, but, well, I had nothing to do at the moment.

--an animated Dante's Inferno.
Uh--[counts rapidly]--wait, that's four. But still, it would be a spectacular concept. I'd try to follow the original text as faithfully as possible, find some unique ways of animating the dead souls in hell, and have some deep-voiced actor like James Avery or James Earl Jones narrate the piece.
I can see the blurbs on the trailers/posters now: "Hell sells"..."Abandon all hope, ye who enter here"..."Onward march the banners of the King of Hell".

Actually, aren't the general characters from Mulan public domain? Soundsl like your idea is unique enough from the movie that I doubt Disney could hassle you about it. At least they better not after their stealing Atlantis away from Nadia!

Nadia is available to buy on VHS and now starting on DVD. It is possible to have already seen it. I have seen half of it, and I would label it as a quality cartoon. Good character development, nice pacing (except for a few episodes before the final arc) and respectable animation. The show is sometimes light (comedy stemming from Jean and Nadia's romance) and heavy (Nadia and Jean trying to explain to little Marie that her parents are dead).

I know what it's about. It was made by the creaters of EVA. I seem to recall Calhoun saying that he hasn't seen it yet.

It said the server was too busy to post, so I clicked on the back button and when I re posted the message, I guess my text was gone! Oh well. I meant to say that I have seen enough to know it's good, just not in its entirety.
