Surprisingly, the most unexpected announcement came from Haim Saban himself.
"I have come out of my years of hiding from the angry fanboys to announce that Disney has sold off Saban to the good folk at 4Kids and we are now doing joint dubbing projects."

And what are these joint dubbing projects, you may ask?

Why, "Dr. Slump" and "Digimon Savers", of course!

"And due to popular demand," Saban stated. "Jeff Nimoy has been hired to do the dub scripts of both!"

Dr. Slump will be renamed "Ultimate Muscle: The Later Years", involving Kid Muscle in middle-age as a normal human being who magically gets a robot sister due to the magical powers of the nega-verse.

And Digimon Savers will be renamed "Mighty Morphin Digital Rangers" and will have a young boy named Maru with his friend Agumon (joined by the Digital Friends Society) trying to make friends with different Digimon and helping them find their one true place where they belong.

Both series are being promised by Al Khan to "have uncut DVDs, which will be cancelled before they're even made".

Neither Saban or Khan could be questioned at the time, due to overdoses of Magical Doremi and Sailor Moon, leading to hot gay sex.

Over the past 10 years, anime has become more and more part of American culture. Over the years it has become easier to gain access to. All genres of anime, for all age ranges are readily avaiable, on network TV, cable, premium cable, Satalite, DVD and so forth...

Despite this, there is one thing that remains true among anime fans young and old, weather they've been watching since it could only be found on hard-to-find imports, or as internet phenomienon, or just started watching a few weeks ago. You're either a Dub fan, or a Sub fan. Yes, you CAN like both, but at some point you'll decide you'll like one, over the other!

Due to the fact that anime is typical delivered in Japanese, it is neccasary to tranlaste it into English for the enjoyment of the English speaking fans. This can mean anything from fans putting english subtitles, to western production companies buying the rights to the show, and having voice actors dub over the lines in English. This can lead to some strong feelings among the fans...

Thougbts:

I like the concept of subtitles, I enjoy reading, and can fully enjoy what is going on and be able to read what is being said. However, because of cultural diffrences, it CAN be neccasary through the use of the subtitles to explain jokes, cultural refrences, and sometimes even lingual matters. This can overwelm the reader, who can already be struggling with just trying to read the subtitles and keep up with the story. If the voice acting is getting a little fast paced, it can be difficult to read the entire subtitle in time.
This is why dubbing is practiced. If everything is in English, the viewer can simply watch, and take in everything as it's being spoken. But the trouble is, this is where things can get screwy...

Feelings:

I am a dub fan. Yes, call me a poser, call me a noob (what a crappy insult), call me ill-informed, call me mainstream. Most of the anime I've seen has been dubbed, and I've tended to enjoy it...
The arguments I've heard for why the Subs are supieor haven't always been solid. Mostly they are "The English voice actor for so-and-so is awful!". But there are a few that DO present good cases. One, and one of the strongest I've heard is that the Japanese voice actors are just more pasionate.
Typically complaints fall into how the original content is changed. This can mean anything from re-working of the dialouge, to editing scenes for American broadcast, to in the most extreme cases, changing dialouge, music, scene progression, and even the story itself!

This can certaintly angry fans, and understandibly so. Death is often tap danced around. Instead of being dead, the victims are "knocked out", but any vetern anime fan knows the truth. Even slight name changes can dilute the enjoyment of a fan, and when a big edit is noticable, things go downhill QUICKLY.

Now, I am anti-censorship, so if I can see, an anime in it's original, uncut form, that's ideal. The problem? I don't have the money to buy all the new DVDs which contain the original cut and the original Japanease voice acting. And anime shows are almost ALWAYS spread over sevral DVDs, which can mean owning the whole series easily breaking the $100 mark.

Ridiculous Therioes:

A possiblitly to why Subs are preferred over Dubs could be simnply familariraity. Once you get used to hearing one version, you tend to prefer that version. Kind of like cover songs. If you hear the cover first, you may prefer that over the original. Or, you've heard and liked the original so much the cover song just sounds lame.

Even dubs that stayed very true to the original dialouge can fall into this.

I own a few DVDs where I can hear the original language snd I still prefer the dubs. Maybe it's just the comfort and hearing my native language, but I still enjoy the Englsih over Japanese. FLCL's dub was nearly word for word perfect to the Japanese original, but I just can't get past the fact I just like the Englsih version better.

Now....how do YOU, the regulars to the Anime Forum feel about all this? Do you prefer subs? Or Dubs?

Well folks, it's been fun while it lasted. After considering several factors (lack of member participation, personal issues, and the tediousness of doing a new thread each and every month devoted to highlighting a different anime you might've never seen before), the ToonZone Anime of the Month club is officially closed forever. I know many of you were expecting a new thread highlighting the classic anime OVA Goldenboy, but unfortunately, that won't be happening now, or anytime soon. It's definitely a very sad day for us all.:crying:

Thanks to all of those who have participated in the monthly AotM threads since it's inception, and rest be assured, Anime of the Month will continue to live on in our hearts and minds. And so on this, we say goodbye .... and rest in peace.

Japanese publisher Kaakusuku****su in association with Toonami UK comes the new shounen adventure series Yaoi Yuri based on a manga that will be simultaneousy released by Anaru Rekutomu who has done nothing but studied Shonen Ai, Shoujo Ai and Transgender manga and anime like Ranma 1/2.

The story center's around a young person named Yaoi Yuri. The Yaoi family has a dark secret. Whenever they are excited, flustered or emotional they transform to the opposite gender. However Yuri is a very special child whose personality also changes with the change. As an added twist Yuri's two personalities are attracted to the same sex as they are. Yaoi Yuri travels from land to land in hopes to cure the curse and free his family from the transformation as only the 50th in the generation can do. Yuri travels with twin demons Doujin and Shi who are brother and sister and incidently they both love Yuri but Doujin the male demon only finds Yuri attractive when Yuri is in female form and likewise Shi only finds Yuri attractive when Yuri is in male form. This of course conflicts with Yuri's own feelings and Anaru san has assured readers and viewers that the series will be full of those fabulous awkward situations that anime and manga have made famous.

As a stab towards their compeition it's apparent that Toonami UK has named the villians after Jetix UK and Disney series such as Lake Jong and Master Ho. As you can guess those names are used to represent the characters while also avoiding getting sued.

Kaakusuku****su hopes for the series to be a big success and that the animated series produced by Toei Digimation will be able to reach audiences from around the world and at last remove the barrier keeping such great shows as Sailor Stars and Ranma 1/2 out of countries run by prudes. Toonami UK will begin broadcasting the series exactly one year from now. However it seems Kaakusuku****su has no plans to air the series in Japan yet. The president who will remain nameless had this to say "I don't think people would even watch this kind of kuso in Japan". Anime fans may be dissapointed to hear 4kids Entertainment has been brought in to dub the series and write the English scripts but they've assured numerous anime publications that they'll keep as much of it intact as possible and wont ruin it like they ruined One Piece. BANDAI ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES 2008 GUNDAM PROJECT: GUNDAM TSUBASA

New Gundam series to premiere on Cartoon Network's Toonami March 2008

March 31, 2007 (Cypress, CA) North American Gundam fans can rejoice. Bandai Entertainment, the premier distributor of Japanese animation in North America, has announced a brand new Gundam project created specifically for an American audience.

"This has been in the works for a couple of years," said Ken Iyadomi, President of Bandai Entertainment Inc. "Mobile Suit Gundam Tsubasa will be the first Gundam series to premiere in the United States before it is seen by viewers in Japan.

When asked about the name, Iyadomi was very positive. "We're certainly aware that Tsubasa means Wing, we think the name is symbolic of our desire to do the same things all over again. And hey, if we trick fans of CLAMP's manga into watching so much the better."

Iyadomi said the new series will be directed by Chiaki Morosawa. "After all," he said, "her past ideas have worked very well before. And nobody knows what English-speaking viewers want to see better than a Japanese person."

Mr. Iyadomi couldn't help looking confused when asked about the timetable for a UK release. "Wait a minute, we have British fans? I'm really not aware of a coherent European policy."

Mobile Suit Gundam Tsubasa begins five years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny. With the world in peace after the death of Gilbert Durandal and the Earth Alliance leaders still crying themselves to sleep over their constant defeats, Gundam pilot Kira Yamato and his friends start to feel bored. So Orb's technical genius, Erica Simmons, invents the new Tsubasa Gundam, which has the power to time travel and even open portals to other dimensions. "Hey, why not?" Morosawa commented.

Unfortunately during the test run an unexpectedly large dimensional rift is opened and Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, Shinn Asuka, Miriallia Haw, Lunamaria and Meyrin Hawke, Cagalli Yula Atha, and Lacus Clyne are all pulled through along with their mobile suits. Realizing they have no control over where the dimensional gate sends them, the heroes decide to use their Gundams to fight to bring peace to every world they come to without regard for the consequences until they finally find their way home again.

Morosawa believes this will be a revolutionary event for the Gundam franchise, as the heroes will be visiting every previous timeline associated with the Gundam name. "You see pacifism, total disarmament, and solving problems by talking instead of just blowing up the other guy's mobile suit are the best way of doing things. For example Gihren Zabi is a lot like Hitler, he would never have been a fascist bastard if someone had just been there to talk him through his emotional problems."

Best of all, Morosawa said, the series would reintroduce the mobile suits and Gundams of the past to new fans. "It'll be so nice to not have to design anything new, and GUNPLA sales will have a field day."

This is the first directing role for Ms. Morosawa, who is also the head writer. She discussed her job with humility. "I wasn't the first choice, not at all. We actually wanted Mr. Yoshiyuki Tomino to direct, but after he read my script he threw himself out a window and committed suicide. I can't imagine why. Its all very tragic and my most heartfelt condolences go out to Mr. Tomino's family and friends."

Mobile Suit Gundam Tsubasa will be released by Bandai Entertainment Inc. in 2008.

Dammit, I've been painstakingly preparing Berserk: The Abridged Series (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=442F9290791E856D) ever since I first saw the anime back in 2001. Not wanting to sacrifice quality for quickness, I created one episode a year with an eye toward eventually debuting on YouTube, which I finally did this year, only to learn that some Yu-Gi-Oh obsessed FOOL had already posted some nineteen episodes of his blatant ripoff called Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged series.
